The 2014 squad might take offense to your best team ever though 😉

However, this year's squad will have as good a chance as ever of winning a Regional Championship since they lucked into being in Sectional 2 and not Sectional 3. Won't be easy, but a potential path through a 7-2 Penn, 9-1 Elkhart, and 11-0 Crown Point squad to do it? SHEESH! Murderers Row there!

2014? No offense, but that's funny. Both New Haven and Columbia City took Carroll to overtime and Carmel beat them by 49 points.  That team would get trounced by the 2022 version.

Penn, Elkhart, and Warsaw are no slouches, but poor Homestead drew Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers. I agree that Carroll lucked out a bit. But the sectional they drew is a beast in it's own right. Then Crown Point comes to town. If they can get through that, then they might just be battle tested enough to give HSE/Fishers a run for their money.

I am excited for this game though. I think Carroll is somehow even better than they were last year, and the Kingsmen are getting very little respect outside the Michiana area.

This will be a good game. I give Carroll a slight edge, but Penn is at home. It's a coin toss in my opinion.

I think it will be a good matchup against Carroll's juggarnaut offense.

I think Carroll's offenses in '20 & '21 were slightly better than this years version. This team has a better defense though. Regardless, it all equates to Carroll's best team ever. Unfortunately, I think there is still a gap between them and the top 5 or 6 teams out of Indy.

Penn is not the old Penn, this coming straight from Penn fans. I have heard more than a few fans grumbling about coaching, you had a good one in Geesman for sure. Still a fan in how hard Penn plays though

As stated in a previous post, they're like a yoyo under Yoeman. But hey, can anyone really replace Geesman?

I am a little shocked that Snider signed a 4 year deal with East Noble…

You're not the only one. At the minimum I thought they would pick up a 5A school. But that's coming from a fan with no inside ties to the program. They have a quality coaching staff. Maybe there is a method to their madness.

I am pretty sure it was a "scheduling" thing.  Penn had contracts that overlapped the SAC's transition period from a closed conference to the 2 open weeks starting in 2023.

So it was on Snider to get teams set up.  They went with Warren Central as one of the new match-ups, not sure about the other.  I know the 1st Warren Central matchup will be at LOS next year.  The 2nd will be on a Saturday at Spuller Stadium in 2024.

Thanks for the heads up on Snider/Penn. I would have been shocked if the two teams didn't at least look into it.

Snider signed a four year deal with East Noble.

I think LC would have waxed that Ville team. The ‘92 team really had a chance against Ben Davis.

Agree and agree. I think Snider let off the gas against Merrillville in 2012 after taking a commanding lead. LC beat Snider by 24, Merrillville would have been worse.

I always maintained that Snider, Ben Davis, and Merrillville were all on equal footing in 1992. Someone had to win.

I also maintain that Merrillville is the team to beat in 2022. They've earned that target.

Well Snider of course . We did play Snider in the regular season for a few years11,12,13 and14 , don't know what happened after that .

Snider picked up Penn after Elmhurst and Harding shut down. Then the SAC picked up Homestead and Carroll in 2015. So before 2011 and after 2014, the SAC was an island conference.

No I got it more as a 35-21 game.
man’s it’s more recent than that. 2012 merrillville lost 42-39 to snider @ snider merrillville was down big if I remember correctly and we fought back only to have a goalline fumble with under a min left in game. We should of played LC at state that year.

Snider hasn't gotten out of sectional in three years. We're getting ahead of ourselves here.

Don't think Penn will ever give up that first game with Valpo , been that way for 20 years . As for other non conference games ,With the exception of Cathedral , they have been scheduling out of state teams (Michigan , Ohio)

Who would put more fans in the stands? An out of state team or Snider?

The feeling is mutual. Long history between Penn and Snider , maybe Carroll will become our new Rival from the Fort .

Where was Penn when open dates came to fruition for the SAC? I have a hard time believing that Snider didn't reach out to them. I'm just speculating.

  11. For similar size schools to compete with New Pal, they have to put their 11 best guys on offense and defense and hope they are in as good of condition as the Dragons. From what I understand, New Pal plays their best athletes on both sides of the ball. I'm not sure how they would compete with 6a programs otherwise.

Snider has had better teams last 3-4 years that still haven’t gotten out of sectionals 😂 hearing from snider fans this team is good but nothing compared to last few years. But it’s okay. It will all be put to rest in 3-4 weeks

Merrillville shouldn't worry, this is their year.

this Snider team would get blown out by the Snider team of 2015.

Blowout? I disagree. But I think it's too early to draw that conclusion. If Snider fails to make it out of sectional for the fourth year in a row, then I'll concede. If they win state, then we'll have to revisit this. You've stated that Snider has a fighting chance, we get that. But I don't think Merrillville, North Side, and Mishawaka are as pitiful as you make them out to be.

2 teams below 5a could name their score on their way to the 5a trophy, but I believe up to 5 could make a legitimate run to the trophy if given the opportunity

Over the last decade there have been multiple teams in 5a which lost in the sectionals, or regionals. Some of these teams that were sectional cannon fodder, would dominate the playing field of 5a this year.

This is one of the weakest years 5a has had since the mega schools split into 6a.

whoever comes out on top in 5a this year would get waxed by every 5a champion of the past decade, as well as most of the 4a champions of the past decade.

Noted. And thank for your insight. Snider, Merrillville, Mishawaka,  and North Side must really be awful.

For reference, the 2013 Luers team who finished the regular season 0-9 and ended 2-10 finished 23rd in Sagarin 3A and that was before Carroll and Homestead were annual additions to the schedule.

A Luers team who goes 2-7 or 3-6 playing the schedule they currently do will always finish in the top 32 of class 2A or 3A.

    Fact

I thought you were referencing the regular season: "A Luers team who goes 2-7 or 3-6 playing the schedule they currently do will always finish in the top 32 of class 2A or 3A." Which begs the question: What were they ranked before the tournament started in 2013?

  16. 6 hours ago, Rodney said:

If multiple teams in classes lower than 5a could walk in and take the trophy without breaking a sweat is it not weak?

Multiple teams? Are we talking two teams here?

Without breaking a sweat equates to blowing out your opponent. Let's wait a few weeks before drawing that conclusion.

Appreciate you putting out this bracket.....to me, the most intriguing first round games include:

    • Carroll vs Penn
    • Elkhart vs Warsaw
    • Homestead vs HSE
    • Westfield vs Carmel
    • Brownsburg vs Ben Davis (a slobberknocker for sure)
    • CG vs FC.  (FC has improved and the Coach West and Coach Moore history)

Not a good year for Homestead to take on the top of the HCC.

Because what would bring in more revenue for Frankfort?:

    A.  A 10th regular reason game of 1-8 Frankfort versus 0-9 Marion @ Frankfort.

    or

    B. A first round playoff game of 9-0 Kokomo versus 1-8 Frankfort @ Frankfort.

The logical answer would be B.

If the IHSAA read these submissions, then you are in the process of giving them a migraine.

I guess what I don’t understand how there would be a loss of revenue. If you added a 10th regular season game and cut the tournament field in half, you’re still playing the same number of total games. Why would revenue be less?

I missed "or a 10th regular season game against an opponent of your choosing" when reading through the posts. The 10th game would solve the qualifier issue with regard to revenue.

Please explain this statement. I’d like to hear how you came to that conclusion.

Re-read my post: "If they implemented a qualifier and eliminated half the teams from the field, there would be an uproar. And you'd have loss of athletic department revenue."

    1 minute ago, Footballking16 said:

An uproar if a team that finished 0-9 or 1-8 wasn't invited to the postseason? Why?

Add a 10th regular season game. Allow teams who didn't qualify for the postseason to play an end of the year "bowl game" if gate revenue is the sole purpose for maintaining an archaic playoff format. Shouldn't be that hard to figure out.

The 0-9 or 1-8 team is accustomed to playing that 10th game. So yes, there would be some disappointment. I agree with "add a 10th regular season game."
