Sometimes the biggest win is off the football field.

I think that in part is due to their past glory as well as being the largest 6A school in their area.
Gimme Elkhart to surpass Penn sooner rather than later.
We said that when Elkhart became a mega school. Like you always say............"show me."

The "stories" need to be recent in order for a team to be relevant.
Nebraska has "stories."
I'll just agree that "storied" and "relevant" are not synonyms. Even though I didn't make a correlation between the two.

Eh…
I get the "eh," but Penn still seems to be part of the conversation every year whether they come through or not. Hence "relevant."

The 90's were a time to be alive as a Kingsmen....A bygone era
It's not the 90's, but they're still relevant.

Not here to derail or sidetrack the conversation but storied and relevant are nowhere near synonyms.
Back on topic, Bama getting throttled in the portal...you hate to see it.
Depends on so called "stories."

I agree that ND is the most "storied."
I also agree that all they have lately are "stories."
(Sorry @Bobref, I had to.)
But a relevant program nonetheless.

I don’t think it’s arguable. You said most “storied.” Not the best. Not the most championships or All-Americans. Not the most players in the NFL. Find another program that has been featured in 3 full length movies.
I agree. "Storied" and "best" are certainly two different things. I'm curious if anyone out there has an opinion as to why it could be "arguable." Being from Northern Indiana, I'll admit that I'm a bit biased toward the Irish. Who would the potential candidates be? Alabama, USC, or Michigan?
Help me out here..............Knute Rockne All American, Rudy, and?

Ummm, no.
"Arguably." I've got Notre Dame. Probably depends on what area of the country you reside.

You make great points...sometimes the gamble works out....sometimes it doesn't and it would have been better to stay in "your own backyard". DeBoar had certainly moved the Huskies forward and kind of had it made there. A gamble for sure. I had circled the Washington at IU game next year because of him...now not so sure, although I believe Washington made a nice hire of the Arizona coach...who also turned that program around.
I do think DeBoar has more experience as a head coach than Weiss given his time as Fresno State, Washington and then prior at smaller schools. Weiss had pretty much been a coordinator at the pro level (outstanding O coordinator) and jumped straight into a head coaching job at a major place before working up.
Time will tell about DeBoar....Saban came over as a SEC coach....DeBoar is definitely an outsider to the SEC. The question is can he recruit and retain players.
I actually wasn't meaning to compare DeBoar to Weiss. I think DeBoar has proven to be a very high level head football coach. Weiss never reached that status. I think my point was this: If the gamble pays off, then great. DeBoar will have achieved success at arguably the most storied program in college football. And if he doesn't? He still parachutes out a rich man and lives happily ever after.

I agree with your comment Bob. That is a job that had he passed, he would have probably always thought "what if".
Wasn't a walk in the park for Ray Perkins when he succeeded the Bear. But he had the first losing season for Bama since 1957. Regardless, his next assignment after Bama following his resignation wasn't bad....he certainly moved on. I think DeBoar will be just fine. I like his hire of Wommack....glad to see him focus on D.
Agree. No one can blame the guy for taking it. I've just seen many good careers go south going from one gig to another. Doesn't really matter from a monetary standpoint. Charlie Weiss is a good example of getting rich from being a lousy head football coach. At the end of the day, good coach or bad coach, they all end up with one hell of a retirement.

I agree with you. DeBoer will not succeed at Alabama and he will be run out of town in 2-3 years and wish he had stayed at Washington.
I guess we'll see. To his credit, he has won everywhere he's been. SEC is a different beast though.
-
I'll never understand a move like this, but that's just me. To each their own. Reminds me of when Rich Rodriguez had the world at his finger tips when he was at West Virginia. It was all downhill from there. DeBoer is pretty revered in Washington and the move to the Big Ten was pretty exciting for their program. Again, to each their own.

Yep, I’m back…just sipping more champagne 40+ hours later…having trouble comprehending what many of you down there are saying from the top of this mountain.
Headed back to the store for more bubbly…will check back in later.
Temp…OUT.
I really don't believe what I just said. I think Michigan has a very good team and is worthy of that championship trophy. I just wanted to reel you back into the conversation. Enjoy that champagne, it's been a long time for Wolverine fans.
-
Congratulations to the Wolverines on their championship and ringing one up for the Big 10. Far and away the weakest field since the inception of the four team playoff. But a championship trophy none the less.

Where'd he go?
He said "out." I think he means it. He'll be back sooner than later.

I've been to the Big House. It's big, but that's about it. That being said, how nice their stadium is has no bearing on the fact that they are the best team in college football and just crowned themselves champions. What's disturbing to me is what college football has become and the lengths some will go (or is it most) to achieve success (or maybe it's just the income). Money corrupts the majority. I think a coach nowadays will do whatever it takes to secure his seven figure salary and over inflated ego. Many are guilty of it, not just Harbaugh.
Anyway, congrats to the Wolverines, and glad this drama filled season is over with.

I think you could make a good case that such a rule would amount to price-fixing, and you’d have a giant antitrust lawsuit.
Lol, there's a lawsuit for everything. I get it though. I work in a professional industry.

Think about how that would play during recruiting.
All or none. It would have to be an NCAA rule.

Those days are long gone, and they ain’t coming’ back. Economics dictated the rise of the current open market. There’s no putting that genie back in the bottle.
Ok, so how about just "pay us back for the last semester?"
-
A free education is no longer good enough? "We brought you here to play football and get an education that other students are going deep into debt for. Play in the bowl game or pay us back for the last semester."
College football (Division 1) is a clown show, no more, no less.
-
Thank God for high school football. Still clean and pure compared to any other level of play.
I think we fans, as much as anyone else affiliated with college football, have sold our souls to the devil in some way shape or form. I think we can all admit that college football has turned into an utter joke. Do whatever it takes to win, even if it's not legal. Where's Bob Knight when we need him? He would have made a great NCAA president. This isn't a slam on Harbaugh, it's a slam on the clown show that college football has become.
Just a random thought before gearing up for another season of the Fighting Irish. Guilty.

6-10 is is reality for a lot of NFL coaches who go into the season with no real talent at QB1. Not really sure it's that big of a blemish on the guy. Besides, the NFL has no bearing on being the GOAT in College. Resources? A lot of the Blue Bloods he's beaen over the years also have resources. Especially in the SEC. Feels like you're really reaching. The guy first won with with the strength of his defenses at LSU/Bama and then adjusted with the evolution of the game to build championship caliber offenses. He's the epitome of being a CEO as HC.
I wouldn't say I'm reaching at all. I'm just saying there's other coaches out there that could do what he's done with seven top ranked recruiting classes in a row. "Recruiting is coaching," bla bla bla. There's speculation on how Alabama recruits end up at Alabama.
In the end, I agree that he's a very good coach. There's nothing more to debate here.
