  1. The winning play occurred when the LaVille runner was stood-up at the 6 yard line, but in the scrum got pushed into the end zone!
  2. Yeah, only 5 miles between the 2 schools. St. X is an unusual 2-5 (one of the wins against Penn). Should be a close game between teams having slightly down years.
  3. I knew about Mishawaka. Had not heard about Carmel. Of all the Indy area schools, they've had the most success against Carmel, but are still under .500 against them, I suspect. Does anybody know who replaces St. X?
  4. Penn at St. Xavier - short spurts of good play by Penn on both sides of the ball, but they are still not nearly where they need to be to compete at the highest level. Let's dampen the schedule a little. I think the series with St. X has ended. Don't know about Indy Washington.
  5. Attended the Penn at Cincinnati St. Xavier game last night. When the score got to 35-3, the 30-pt mercy rule kicked and then when Penn scored to make it 35-10, they reverted back to normal timing. I later read the OHSAA regs and the officials were correct. Good job!
  6. A better showing by the Kingsmen, but Cathedral still clearly superior
  7. Thanks! A side note, for Penn. If you only consider the years 1973-present (the Geesman/Yeoman years), the Kingsmen are 493-95-2, a winning percentage of .8379, which blows away the rest of the field.
  8. 35-6, with running clock in the second half. I guess weeks 3 and 4 will answer the first part of the question (Cathedral and Cincinnati St. Xavier)
  9. Is there an explanation why Jasper (#3) and Penn (#5) have played the same number of games (746), yet their starting seasons are 51 years apart (1907 vs. 1958)?
  10. Penn's first championship was the last outdoor championship game and was at North Central in 1983. It was about 70 degrees that day, no coat necessary on that November night!
  11. I had always heard that spiking from shotgun (ball straight down in front of QB) was Intentional Grounding and that spiking had to be done over center. Mishawaka Marian did it twice in their last drive tonight with no flag.
  12. What's the meaning of the signal when the referee stands at the football and puts his hand in the air before moving the ball between quarters?
  13. Unless my memory is completely gone (wife says it's heading in that direction anyway), I seem to recall that the IHSAA announced last year that they were going to start considering geography of the participating schools when developing the actual schedule of the state finals games. I think it meant that, for example, if 2 South Bend area teams were in the finals in different classes, they reserved the right to schedule those games consecutively as a convenience to the fans of that area. In fact, as recently as last weekend, the IHSAA site indicated that the schedule would be released on November 20 (I'm not talking about home team designation, that will still be done next week), after the semi-state games. Now, tonight (Nov. 18), the IHSAA site shows that the odd-numbered classes are on Friday, evens are on Saturday, the traditional schedule type for many years. Was my memory failing me?
  14. It didn't used to be in the 70's. Then, it was a football field shoe-horned into a baseball stadium. The field sloped down from the foul lines to the dugout, causing our running back to trip and fall while on a breakaway run!
  15. 1985 State Finals in the Hoosier Dome. Brownsburg and Hobart tied 17-17 with something like 10 seconds left in regulation. Brownsburg happy to run out the clock. However, Hobart is penalized for too many men on field. Brownsburg throws a long pass and wins the game. I recall David Letterman showing this play on his show.
  16. Are offensive holding penalties always marked off from the spot of the foul, even if that spot is behind the line of scrimmage? Just watching Valpo/Michigan City game and the holding occurred 2 years behind the LOS and they marched off 10 yards from there, making it 1st and 22. If so, this must be different than College and Pros.
  17. Actually since 1972, the year before Coach Geesman arrived.
  18. Doggone it, I clicked through that game several times and didn't watch to the end! The best comeback I've ever seen was the one in Texas in 1994. Watch to the end! They actually have every-5-year anniversary celebrations about this one.
  19. Watching Etienne of Clemson fair catch a kick near the sideline got me wondering if a pro rule is also the same in high school and college (if you know). That is, if a kickoff is near the sideline and the receiver touches the ball while having at least one foot out-of-bounds (even if the ball itself is inbounds), is the kick then considered out-of-bounds? I've seen several YouTubes of pro games where this has happened.
  20. Was there a definitive point in time when the officials (at all levels) started putting the ball on a yard line to reduce the number of measurements? You hardly see any measurements nowadays, when there used to be at least one every game, it seemed.
  21. That's nice to hear, because I remember the old Ames. Back in '75 or '76, I remember when Penn went over and played Elston and our star running back, Tom Hill, was on a breakaway run, but tripped and fell because, if I recall. the field sloped down from the baseball base paths with which the football field shared.
  22. Tough year this year, but they were right on the cusp. Their regular season losses were to teams that had a combined record of 32-1, before the tournament and several of those loses were 4 points or less (Cathedral being the exception). Three of those teams made it to at least semi-state. No doubt eventual Ohio champion Cincinnati St. Xavier would have been a difficult game for Penn, had it been played. Their 2017 season was dominating, until hitting the BD buzzsaw in the Championship game. Penn will be back. Still haven't had a losing season in 48 years!
  23. It would be good competition-wise, but that's a lot of long distance travel on school nights in potentially bad weather.
  24. As I watched the CC-South Adams game, they mentioned multiple times that the CC head coach was an interim coach who started in the middle of the season. But no mention, nor could I find on the web, what caused this coaching change after the season started. Does anybody know?
