I wouldn't call Zionsville beating Dwenger an upset. That was probably a pick em game. But absolutely no way, unless Cathedral took the night off would Dwenger stay within 2 TDs of the Irish. Neither will Zionsville.
I thought Dwenger was the better team than Zionsville. Killer unforced turnovers and a questionable DPI on the last drive kept the Eagles alive.

Roncallis falloff can be attributed as much or more to the departure of Coach Scifres than to the introduction of the SF or any other mitigating factors
Disagree. Scifries is an all-timer but lack of creativity in the offense likely held Roncalli back several years. Power toss left and power toss right 9/10 times works if you have the hosses up front, but Roncalli has gone to a modern, spread approach on offense and you see the results. I think same can be said for Lorenzano at Chatard. Still will never get used to seeing the Trojans slinging the ball all over the field, but hey if it works....

Irish went entirely vanilla in 2nd half from what I could tell. Switched out players on defense early, even with number 1's on offense ran basic plays. That being said had their not been 3 missed PAT's the running clock would have been instituted (score 32-0 at the time 3 PAT's would have put it at 35-0) Castle scored on the defense with back-ups in with 7:22 remaining in the game. Recovered an onside kick, after the back-up came up with a stop with 4:23 remaining the Irish ran out the clock. The game was never in doubt even in the 3rd and 4th qtr, Irish looked to go on cruise control in 2nd half.
All that being said it was total domination in the first half. 35 plays 342 yds 15 first downs and 29 points to 25 plays 37 yds 4 first downs 0 points. What more could you ask for. They set themselves up in the first half very well. Castle was definitely going to fight, but in all reality the Irish didn't have to do much in the 2nd half.
there’s one thing Cathedral won’t do and that’s run up the score on an inferior opponent. Scored 7 2nd half points against Decatur, 14 against Whiteland, and 3 against Castle after dominating first halves.

Not sure Steele has the stats.
Doesn’t have jump off the wall stats primarily because he’s either taken out after halftime or playing with a running clock, but still good numbers nonetheless.
I could see cases for all 3 (and Huebler) but head tells me it is Steele’s to lose.

My concern with Westfield; can they stop Center Grove on offense? Westfield’s offense has come alive throughout the course of the season, but that really doesn’t matter against CG’s stifling defense.

Who are the leading candidates to take home Mr. Football this year? Admittedly, I have been primarily focused on our team, so I apologize if there is an obvious choice out there.
I would guess Cathedral’s (and St. Roch alum) Nathan McCahill would have to be a strong candidate.
Baron Huebler’s 2,167 yards (7.4 avg) and 31 TDs on 291 carries is also worth of some attention.
Who else?
I started a thread at the mid-way point of the season and thought it’d come down to these three guys:
Donovan McCulley-LN
Carson Steele-Center Grove
Nathan McCahill-Cathrdral
I will add that Roncalli’s impressive run to the state finals probably warrants some attention for Huebler.
At the end of the day the award is likely going to go to the best skill position player on the best team and that’s Carson Steele. McCulley and his commitment to Indiana is probably what most want to see, but I feel he needed to lead LN to at least a sectional title.

But Westfield’s is earned. They are on fire right now. Some teams boast false bravado based on minimal accomplishments.
Making the semi-state is no joke but Westfield’s body of work heading into Friday night has been much more impressive than Merrillville’s overall body of work.
Now, will that matter once the game starts? Maybe not.
I still like Westfield by three scores. Schedule strength matters. Plain and simple.
Crazy to think how far Westfield has come since week 1. Granted, Cathedral has turned out far better than anyone could have imagined, but was very unimpressed with Westfield.

All 3. The numbers though will show by school, and I don't believe any of the districts only use neighborhood schools. For example, if there was a school in the Geist area that only took kids from the neighborhood around Geist, the F&R number would be very low. It appears Amy Beverland Elementary is close to the Geist area, and it has a 28% F&R number. Brook Park is one of the elementary schools closer to the south edge of the district, and it has a an 85% R&R number. Both schools will pull students from around the district beyond their local neighborhoods and they area already have a nearly 60 percentage point gap. If both schools only pulled from their neighborhoods I imagine the gap would be closer to that 79 percentage points. You could do similar analysis in Pike and Washington Townships. You have less affluence in the other township districts, but it's still possible to have wide disparities the closer you get to the edges of each district.
Yep.
Amy Beverland is the Geist elementary school. Used to be a direct feeder to Lawrence Central until open enrollment.
Williams Creek is Washington Twp and arguably the wealthiest per capita neighborhood in Marion County. Would imagine most of those kids attend private school but a lot do go through the public school system.

Instead they, literally, have seemed to fall off of a cliff. They went from state contenders to consistently sub .500.
Let’s double their enrollment while we’re at.

I, too, thought Whiteland had a fighting chance. This’ll be the closest game Cathedral has in the tournament.
Whiteland had a decent resume, but lost by double digits to the the only team that had a semblance of the skill position players Cathedral had. Whiteland attempted three forward passes the entire game and the only one completed was to the other team. Recipe for disaster.

i know the rule on open enrollment, i might have not made it clear, what i was trying to say. it is no cost to go from P/S to P/S but to go to P/P you have to phony up some cash
financial aid i see
So how is that not an advantage to public’s? If I live in IPS and have an 8th grader that is really good, I can either a) send him to one of the many surrounding township schools that have good football programs or pony up and send him to Cathedral or Chatard. One’s free and one cost money. Who holds the advantage?

i did not say rich i just said if they can afford it. a family with 2 parents that work with good paying jobs vs a single mom or dad that can just pay the bills.
Not sure how that would bigger advantage to public schools?
Nearly 2/3’s of Cathedral’s enrollment is on some kind of financial aid and I’m guessing that’s on the low end in comparison to other P/P’s statewide. Plenty of single parent kids going to P/P’s.
Open enrollment allows you to attend any public school you want. Before, you attended your local high school or paid to go to a private school. Open enrollment ended that ideology.

yes but only if their parents can afford it
Only rich kids go to P/P’s?
Wouldn’t that then be an even bigger advantage to public schools?

you are forgetting a bout a very large green school in the north
Valpo? Good team but Cathedral is 3-4 TDs better in my opinion.

I have always have felt P/P school should be in their own class. One of the biggest reason was they have no borders they can get kids from anywhere. I know that has changes with open enrollment. Kids can go anywhere if they get their, but with the P/P they can only get there if the parents can afford it.
Open enrollment has ended the discussion about “borders” and that was almost 10 years ago.

MV was terribly overrated. They hadn't played a good team all year. Whiteland beat Mooresville. Zionsville, Dwenger, Valpo all very good.
Mooresville beat Decatur and Roncalli is better than both Whiteland and Decatur. East Central or Mooresville (not sure how semi-state would look as Cathedral would shake up alignment) both better than Castle. No argument on 4A north however but not sure it really matters who Cathedral plays in Zionsville or Dwenger.
4A would be tons more competitive if the SF didn’t exists as some of the best teams in 5A are 4A by enrollment.

Cathedral playing in 4A tournament created the TSF. It has effected a lot of schools. And for the most part has worked. Top of 5A is much better than the top of 4A.
This year? I don’t agree.
Path of Roncalli/Mt Vernon (sectional), Mooresville (regional), East Central (semi-state) is just as hard, if not harder, than Cathrdral’s 5A path.
-
1 minute ago, CaptainHook said:
Agreed. I think the TSF has worked better than I expected. Except for Cathedral almost sliding back to 4A.
So is it the success factor or the Cathedral factor? You can’t have it both ways. It would have been disappointing as a fan to watch Cathedral play in the 4A tournament this year although I don’t think there’s a huge difference at the top of 4A and 5A this year once you take Cathedral out of the equation. But it’s not an arbitrary rule on a case by case basis, it must remain the same for everyone.

I think all privates should probably play up one class, due to the advantages over public that they have. I did not think tournament success should apply to public schools. But now that it has happened, it has worked out ok. Columbus East and New Palestine have shown the ability to compete when moved up. I do not think a public school should be allowed to bump up two classes though.
The Tournament Success Factor was aimed at Cathedral. For the most part, it has worked, bumping them above their irrelevant 4A enrollment. Just take a look at the number of kids on Cathedral's roster compared to a 4A school, and it will tell you they don't belong there. The fact they were willing to move back down to 4A in 2019 is laughable.
As for Spegal, the Dragons would never have won back to back 5A's without him. But would have won back to back 4As (where they belong).
All P/P’s aren’t Chatard or Cathedral, not even close. Saying Park Tudor or Bishop Noll should play up a class because Cathedral and Chatard punch above their weight is ludicrous. It’s why the success factor, and not a multiplier or auto 1 class bump, exists.

I can name 1 Delta kid that went through their feeder system and ended up at New Pal
How about actually played at Delta High School before ending up at New Pal?
It doesn’t matter though. Someone from New Pal of all people should know it’s the way you put your pads on that determines success.

Roncalli starting to look like a 6A Program

Cathedral and Roncalli didn’t play in any of Scifries last 4 years as they weren’t in the same class and Dwenger and Roncalli to my knowledge haven’t played each other in the last 10 years.
