So I think you knew the neighborhood. Let's say a kid enrolled at Bosse and played a year, but transfers to Memorial. He walks from home to both schools. Why should his parents have to move?

Memorial doesn't have a district. Or am I missing something?

Or, to maybe make it more palatable to some on here... Kid enrolled at Memorial and played a year, but transfers to Bosse. Still walks to both schools. Same question. Why require a move?

If the kids want to transfer, then transfer... move districts and go to a new school.

The fact coaches and teachers move JOBS is 1000000% irrelevant to this discussion and quite honestly shouldn't be brought up. Coaches, teachers, and students are 3 completely different entities--- never understood why anyone would compare a student to a coach. There really isn't much to compare.

Do you know many students with a mortgagee, car payment, 8 month old daughter, wife, etc?

Facts!!! There have been different discussions on here that NIL will eventually permeate the high school level. Day that happens, I will most likely transfer my passion of high school football to the middle school level… Lol

I honestly don't know the answer to that. Maybe for IHSAA purposes we do. Switch Memorial with Harrison then. Kid is at Bosse and wants to go to Harrison (2 miles away). Does he have to move? I guess I don't understand the "just move".

Well.. that's the rule. If you move, basically, you'll be eligible.

Or, don't move and prove you're transferring schools for non-athletic reasons. That's the other part of the rule.

I don't really care whether or not they allow a one-time transfer, I wouldn't, but not really a hill I care to die on.

I'm just saying it's stupid to do it in the name of "well teachers and coaches move jobs, so we should just let 14yr olds flip flop schools." That's all.

Good post. I can't speak for any other parochial school, but our coach is not out trying to contact or recruit players from public schools.

They probably do more than you realize. I attend a lot of scrimmages, middle school all-star tournaments, and 7v7 competitions. Coaches are there. They are talking to students. They are sometimes coaching them in those other activities. Parochial schools are often criticized more than they deserve, but at the end of the day they have to recruit all their students at some point. Students transfer to and from them all the time. Some of them are athletes. Many who attend did grow up in that deanery, but they will all still have a handful that didn't. Some of them chose to attend on their own. Some may have been contacted by a coach, parent, administrator, etc. I talked with a middle school coach from an Indianapolis district. He was telling me that all 3 middle schools in their district (with 1 high school) had really good QBs. He was hoping they would retain one for the freshman team the following week, because there were several coaches trying to convince them to attend their school. Some of those schools were private schools.

That doesn't happen down here.

Therein lies the rub. It is well documented that the IHSAA applies the rules inconsistently. Taking them out of the equation with a automatic one time transfer rule would level the playing field for all students and remove any inconsistent applications. Without getting into all the details, 2 years ago we had a kid transfer from one of the public schools, both schools indicated it was NOT for athletic purposes, yet the former school still blocked full eligibility and the kid had to go through the entire appeal process to get full eligibility, ultimately by suing the IHSAA. Giving a one-time transfer takes politics and bias out.

Then there should never be a 2 time transfer.

But, again, that's fine, put the rule in place. Just don't do because ADULTS are allowed to move jobs lol... they aren't close to the same entity.

With that stated, I am in favor of families finding the best environment for their children. It is a difficult conversation as coaches and programs put so much effort and work into their youth programs to only have kids transfer after their freshman year. With that said, it is our responsibility to build programs that people want to be part of.”

Let them transfer, get better or get used to it.
