You do a great job being fair to both teams given the current state of mccsc athletics , every year when this week rolls around I try to disappear and live in the past😆. Had I broke down this game I would have said something along the lines of "bhsn beats bhss with the aid of the mccsc districting committee, who pillaged long time panther communities that are closer to bhss and districted them to bhsn. "

I remember the day when bhsn was actually in a different conference and class. I actually am more inclined to follow other teams as I get older   as well as the panthers . You know no school board is gonna redistrict schools such as ft wayne snider , etc etc. Actually watched some of the miracle comeback win the artesians had over decatur central . Not that I'm an artesian fan but more of a fan of communities ties that translate to local schools.

That being said is there so.ewhere online we can see season/game stats for south?

The high school districting lines have not been substantially changed since 1997 when Jackson Creek was built. The last change at all was in 2005, so if you think that has helped North in the past few years specifically you'd be wrong. Over the last 4 years alone, South has poached 5 players from the North district who went on to play division 1 football, leading to their continued dominance during that period. Had those players stayed where they were supposed to be, North would have been an extremely talented 5A team and South would have been a shell of what they've been. Even this year, there are 2 players on the North team who are transfers from South and only 1 of them even gets significant playing time. Saying that BHSN uses transfers from South to its advantage is the most hypocritical thing I have ever heard in my time as a North fan. If you're going to make excuses, at least use good reasoning.

You can find South's stats for the first three games on MaxPreps but I don't expect the stats from the North game being put in for some time since there's such a sharp decrease everywhere except for turnovers.

I forgot to tell you that both the JV game and freshman game with North were canceled due to the lack of officials. They are really having trouble getting these games in this season. The JV team has gotten two games in of the four games that were scheduled up to this point and the freshman team has gotten one game in and that was the season opener with Col. East. The Martinsville games were canceled because of the weather delay to the varsity game which was pushed back into Saturday, and I suspect the freshman game with TH North was canceled for the lack of officials.

Luckily North and South were able to get those JV and freshmen games in tonight, always good to see the young guys who are going to lead the program get to compete. The freshmen game was never too close but that JV game ended up being a nail-biter! North was getting everything they wanted through the air because of their fast receivers and South was getting a lot done on the ground. Hopefully tonight was a glimpse into the future of the rivalry.

I would say that your comment is incorrect. I live by monroe hospital and I believe Fullerton and everything north is the current district for b north. To say that anything South of second street going all the way to greene county on bloomfield road  was norths district since 97 is wrong . There is absolutely no reason for that area to go to North since it is 2 miles up tapp road to bhss. Add in Hyde park also. Do you have evidence? Who at sout poached bhsn players cmon give us some names

Posted (edited)

@BOGO FL Common sense districts would be 2nd street all the way out of the county west(bloomfield rd)  . And the areas nearer to  bhss in town and Moores pike out to 446 should all be Panthers.  Had those communities not been 'poached' by the mccsc bhsn would never have had those talented teams you speak of..... But for school lunches or whatever excuse they made they got it done. And yeah bhss is a shell of its former self. Never ever would center Grove , ft wayne snider, or many other schools redistrict their schools like that. bhss is like top 6 or 7 in all time state titles in all sports . We can kiss those days goodbye. But it make no sense to argue with someone about common sense. Congrats North fans can  now claim they are better since they got communities(athletes) that are closer to south  to fill their school and be more successful.  And that is the bottom line of what had been accomplished. BTW bhss has declined un football success ever since the early 2000s. with the addition of Coach mo he brought them back because of coaching. Within one year without poaching he was beating north again. Now he's gone and it's showing.

@BOGO FL Also i never said anything about their being a recent district change. A hall of fame coach @  south filled the void of losing districts for a large portion of the of the time that your speaking of, but take away his years and South like had a 3 year period before he came back where they only won 4 games.    I've had some real doozy conversations online with North fans through the years and I'll take this as a cue to return to watching elk hunting or salmon fishing vids in my free time. Thanks for releasing me.

Finally you can  rest in the knowledge that North should be a 4a sized school and in a different conference like they were in the 70s 'if' the mccsc had districts based on proximity to schools like most communities. It was common knowledge around the high school scene  in the 70s that bhsn stacked the school board in their favor at one point in the late 70s or early 80s North had like 2300 students ( the mccsc has the enrollment figures by year upon request) . Then the districts flipped and flipped again now in favor of bhsn since (1997 according to you) .

I don’t have a dog in the fight nor the knowledge to formulate an opinion on the Bloomington schools and the districting argument. Nevertheless, I understand the southern border of Bloomington North’s district is very close to Bloomington South. Do the Bloomington schools have to stay similar in size? The IHSAA’s current enrollment figures show a difference of 92 students whereas Columbus North has 749 more students than Columbus East. Does either Bloomington school have the capacity to house many more students than the other, or are the numbers evened out because neither can be larger than the other? And if one or both schools can house many more students then why is it districted so that the schools are pretty even in numbers?

I thought there might be some North fans lurking on this forum that don't have an account, so it's good to see you establish an account and any contributions that you have is definitely welcomed.

Actually, there was a redistricting that occurred just a few years ago but not in the traditional way a person would think of it. This subject was kicked around last season under the 2023 Conference Indiana thread with my responses being pretty long (too long) where I got into how zoning laws had affected the growth in Bloomington with much of it to the south, but I won't get into that now.

A few years ago, the MCCSC school board got into the statistical area of students at both North and South that were on the free lunch/reduced lunch program and the numbers showed that North had a much bigger percentage of students on the program. The board decided this was, in their minds, a socio-economic problem, and for the lack of a better way to put it, they wanted the school population at North to have a better balance of students from affluent families vs those that were less well-off.

The school board solution was simple. They decided to change school bus routes in areas that were in traditional South school district areas and only provide bus service to North in those areas. They pretty much forced students in those areas to North H.S. since most families have working parents and have to have the bus service.

To me and also to most people, this was indeed a de facto redistricting without the need to draw lines on a map. Just simply change the bus service forcing students to another school. I know this to be a fact and the school board meetings over it were well covered in the H-T at the time.

I grew up on the southeast side of Bloomington and my home is at best just a half mile from where South Mr. Football Rex Grossman grew up. My property abuts Hyde Park to the east and all of a sudden the school bus service on our road went to North and ditto Hyde Park, and students were being transported clear across town on the extreme northwest side. I had two nephews that were affected by it and they went to North for one year before transferring to the Edgewood H.S. district. A simple call to the transportation department of the MCCSC will reveal to a person which school they transport students to for a specified area. I'll just leave it at that.

I get the competition between fans supporting their schools, but to say that the stats for the North game will be slowed at MaxPreps because of the game result is kind of silly. Actually, some basic game stats are already posted on it as of today.

The day after the North/South game, I posted a summary of the game along with other games within CI, and I pretty much covered the stats from that game, and they were also in the story posted in the H-T.

I often go to MaxPreps trying to get information of games around CI, and when it comes to South, win or lose, specific game stats are often delayed depending on the person providing that information.

My complaint about the stats they provide nowadays, whether it's the H-T or even MaxPreps, is they don't give information anymore on things like penalties, etc. and you almost have to catch the postgame show on one of the radio stations to get that type of info.

When they built Bloomington High School's current location which opened in 1966 on S. Walnut St, it was built to handle a school population of over 3,000 students, but exactly what the figure was I don't know. At the time, University High School had a school population of around 500 students. When they built North back in 1972, they closed University High with most if not all of those students going to North, but I have no idea of what the capacity is at North.

I think that things like the socioeconomic equality that MCCSC is trying to push and has been trying to push for decades now is just a fact of the county at this point. Things like that just come with living in a town like Bloomington, they're going to try to help underprivileged kids. As far as the exact districting lines nowadays, they don't truly matter since it is very easy to move around schools nowadays. I live about a quarter mile from North and a kid who lived down the street from me was a starting receiver for South last year. The transferring is going to happen and there's clearly nothing we can do to stop it at this point and it has been beneficial for both schools.

I don't see much reason in complaining about districting when it is a thing that has been well established for decades that they are trying to even out the playing field on a socioeconomic level.

I think the biggest thing going forward is going to just be these schools building culture and having kids who live in whatever district wanting to come and play for the schools. South has had a very winning culture for a long time now, and for years I've cheered for losing North teams which is just now starting to change. I've had friends who I played with when I was in high school reaching out about North football over the last few months which has been very refreshing. Hopefully, we can reach a point where both of these schools are able to equal out their amount of impactful transfers across all sports, but until then it's something we are all going to have to live with.

Old photo of the football crowd at University High School in Bloomington. This looks like it dates back to somewhere in the late 50s and maybe in the early 60s. The press box looks like a cracker box and one kid in the crowd is in a coat and tie which is something you usually don't see among students except maybe during the King and Queen ceremony in a homecoming game.

Week 5 results in CI:

Bloomington North 24 Terre Haute North 14 - I caught pretty much all of the 2nd half of this game after B-South's game was postponed, and the North Cougars looked nothing like the team that played almost mistake-free ball against B-South last week. The Cougars were constantly hurting themselves with penalties and were called for 13 penalties for 130 yards in the game with nine of those penalties being offensive holds which killed drives. Despite the penalties, the Cougars managed a 17-0 lead in the 3rd before TH North got on the board after the Patriots' RB Zyeiar White broke loose for a 65-yard TD run to make it 17-7. Each team would tack on another TD the rest of the game. Bloomington North ran for 264 yards on 39 carries with QB Dash King leading the way with 94 yards on 18 carries and one TD. TH North ran for 216 yards on 40 carries with White leading the way with 164 yards on 23 carries and two TDs (one TD rushing and one TD receiving), and that was a yard off his average of 165 ypg. In passing, B-North's King was 7 of 12 for 64 yards with one TD and no picks. TH North's soph QB Maddox Woodcock was 8 for 20 and 43 yards with one TD and no picks.

Bishop Chatard 21 Columbus North 14 - This promised to be a close contest between two pretty good teams and that was what it was as the CN Bull Dogs suffered their first loss of the season. It was nip and tuck and the CN Bull Dogs twice had a seven-point lead in the game and had a 14-7 lead heading into the 4th qtr before the Chatard Trojans rallied in the 4th for two TDs with the winning TD coming with 1:05 left in the game after the Trojans drove 89 yards for the score. The Bull Dogs had 355 total yards while the Trojans had 291 yards. As far as passing, CN's junior Asher Ratliff was 21 of 32 for 208 yards and one TD with no picks. Chatard's junior Jack Harrington was 15 of 24 for 96 yards and one pick. As far as rushing, the Trojans had 195 yards rushing on 33 carries, while the Bull Dogs had 147 yards on 29 carries.

Bloomington South 36 Terre Haute South 34 - The B-South Panthers have now won 20 of the last 21 games in this series. This game had to be completed on Saturday after a Friday night weather postponement and the score at 24-21 TH South at the 1:03 mark of the 2nd qtr. Once the game resumed, B-South regained the lead late in the 3rd and had a 28-24 lead with the Panthers maintaining the lead the rest of the way although the TH South Braves stayed right with the Panthers to the end. I can only describe the game in general terms since I haven't found any stats on the game so far. The offense for both teams dominated this game with the defense for both teams only qualifying for a participation trophy since they couldn't hardly stop anyone. However, the Panther defense did step up on a Braves drive in the 4th, stopping the Braves at the 4-yard line and forcing a 21-yard FG to make the score 28-27 B-South. It was clear that forcing the FG actually won the game for the Panthers since a TD there would have been disastrous for the Panthers given the final margin. B-South did score a TD and went successfully for two to push the margin to 9 points at 36-27 with just over six minutes left in the game. However, the TH South Braves went 80 yards on a drive to pull within two points with 2:42 left in the game, and the Panthers had to hang on for dear life to get the win.

Heritage Christian 44 Southport 34 - This may have been the Southport Cardinals best chance at a win this season, but they have now lost six games in a row dating back to the sectional last season. In looking at their schedule, TH North looks like their next best chance at a win, but TH North is an improved team so there is that. I haven't been able to find any stats on the Cardinals so I don't have much info on how they performed stat-wise. The Cards did score on a 62-yard pick-6 in the game and also returned a kickoff 86 yards for a score. The 2A Heritage Christian Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season and were led by their do-everything junior QB Eli Nix who put up another game with enormous stats although he threw two picks in the game. Nix was responsible for 375 yards of offense in the game and was 28 of 45 in passing for 308 yards and six TDs while having those two picks. He also rushed for 67 yards on 23 carries.

Southport can beat Tech in the sectional if they draw them. If they draw Perry they will get boat raced again. Pray for them if they draw Warren.

Yes, you are correct, and they did just that last season against Tech in the sectional and the game wasn't even close. Tech does have a couple wins this season albeit against lower-class teams that are having poor seasons, but I would expect that the Cards would beat them again if they draw them. Although I didn't say it, I was talking about the Cards' regular season schedule.

Week 6 games in CI:

New Albany (3-2 @ Bloomington North (4-1) - The New Albany Bulldogs make the long trip to the northwest side of Bloomington to take on the Bloomington North Cougars. The Bulldog's winning record right now is very misleading and the cumulative record of the three teams they have beaten is 0-15, while their two losses were by lopsided scores. The Bloomington North Cougars have played a somewhat tougher schedule, and are coming off their worst effort of the season against Terre Haute North and had to keep the Patriots at arms-length pretty much the entire game as they couldn't get out of their own way with a plethora of mistakes/penalties. It will probably be an unhappy bunch of Cougars that will welcome the Bulldogs and they will want to make amends for last week's game. All of the tangibles and intangibles seem to favor the Cougars in this game and I expect the game not to be close. (JH's site prediction - Bloomington North 42 New Albany 14)

Terre Haute North (1-4) @ Columbus North (4-1) - The Terre Haute North Patriots make the long trip to Columbus to play the Columbus North Bull Dogs which is coming off their first loss of the season after leading Chatard going into the 4th and giving up the winning TD with just over one minute left in the game. The TH North Patriots were competitive against the Bloom. North Cougars last Friday with a lot of help from the Cougars. The Patriots are led by very talented senior RB Zyeiar White who is averaging 165 ypg. The Patriots QB is soph Maddox Woodcock and his numbers have been pretty modest this season and he is just connecting on .375 pct of his passes so far this season, so look for the Bull Dogs defense to key on White in this game. I expect Bull Dog junior QB Asher Ratliff to have a big game this Friday. Will Columbus North have a letdown after the Chatard loss? I doubt it but even if they do, they have more than enough to handle the Patriots. I expect this game to be over by halftime.

Bloomington South (3-2) @ Southport (0-5) - The Bloomington South Panthers travel to Southport to face the Cards on their home field. The South Panthers are coming off a tough nailbiter two-point win over Terre Haute South, while Southport gave it their best in trying to get that first win, but lost to Heritage Christian by 10 points.  The win over TH South was much needed by the Panthers after they played extremely poor in a loss to the B-North Cougars. I finally found some stats from both the South and Southport games last Friday. South soph QB Duncan Hines rebounded nicely from his poor showing against B-North and hit on 88.2 pct of his passes against the TH South defense, and was 15 of 17 with one TD and one pick. Panther junior RB Braylen Townsend rushed for 168 yards on 31 carries and had 3 TDs. Against Heritage Christian, the Southport Cards were led by junior RB Riley Matlock who rushed for 164 yards on 28 carries and he scored 2 rushing TDs. Cardinal junior QB Gavin Cummings had pretty modest numbers and was 6 of 15 passing for 89 yards and no TDs or picks. South's young offense is definitely well ahead of their young defense and they are capable of putting up a lot of points quickly, while their defense still has a ways to go, especially their secondary. South should beat Southport rather easily, but their defense could up more points than they would care to give.  (JH's site prediction - Bloomington South 38 Southport 24)

Terre Haute South (1-3) @ Northview (5-0) - To me, this is a very interesting game as the South Braves make the short trip to Brazil to take on the unbeaten Northview Knights which is No. 11 in the 4A polls. Terre Haute South's record is misleading and they are a better team than their record suggests, and with the exception of TH North, their schedule has been difficult. On the other hand, we don't know just how good the Northview Knights are. All five of the Knights' wins this season have been against teams with losing records and their opponents have a cumulative record of 6 and 19. The Braves beat the Knights, 36-27, last season. I saw the Braves play against the Bloom. South Panthers last Fri/Sat and like the Panthers, they have an offense that can put up a lot of points quickly, and like the Panthers, their defense can be leaky. The TH South Braves have a veteran QB who is really good in senior Brady Wilson and he was 18 of 22 passing against the South Panthers for a completion pct of .818 and threw for 243 yards and one TD with one pick. The Braves have a very good RB in junior Tyisaac Corbin and he rushed for 168 yards on 31 carries and scored two rushing TDs against the South Panthers. Against a really, really bad Owen Valley team, the Northview Knight were led by junior RB Slade Fell who had 7 carries for 113 yards and a TD. Their junior QB Colton Bath threw the ball just 6 times while completing 4 passes 76 yards and two TDs with one pick. Terre Haute South is just light years better than any of the Knights opponents they have seen so far, so I think they will come out on top in this game. (JH's site prediction - Northview 31 Terre Haute South 30)

Week 6 results in CI: All games were delayed to Saturday.

Bloomington North 52 New Albany 7 - I have almost no information on this game which was re-scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and was up against the IU game that was going on at the same time that was about 2-3 miles away. The game went as expected and North took a 14-0 lead at the end of the 1st, and it was 31-7 at the half, with North outscoring the Bulldogs 21-0 in the 2nd half. That is all of the information I have on it.

Columbus North 51 Terre Haute North 10 - Another game that went as expected as the TH North Patriots made the long trip to Columbus and probably shouldn't have gotten off the bus. According to the game summary that I saw, CN Bull Dog's jr QB Asher Ratliff was 12 of 17 for 129 yards and 3 TDs with 2 picks. The Bull Dogs sr RB Gino Prescott ran for 156 yards on 17 carries and three TDs while scoring another TD on a pass reception. TH North's soph QB Maddox Woodcock was just 7 of 13 passing for 48 yards and no TDs. The Bull Dogs held Patriot's sr RB Zyeiar White, who was averaging 165 ypg, to just 12 yards on 14 carries.

Bloomington South 41 Southport 0 - This is yet another game that went as expected. I have no information on this game other than the final score and it is like there was a media blackout on this game with no one interested in covering the game. The South Panthers were the first team to shutout the Cardinals this season, but that's not saying much at all.

Northview 31 Terre Haute South 28 - I didn't know what to make of this game with the Northview Knights being undefeated at 5-0 coming in, but all of their wins were against teams with losing records. Although the TH South Braves had a losing record, they were actually a step up in the competition level for the Knights. Terre Haute South opened the scoring to make it 7-0, but it was the Knights up at the half 21-7. The Braves scored first in the 2nd half to make it 21-14, but the Knights would answer with another TD to make it 28-14 with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd and that would be the score going into the 4th. The Braves would rally with two straight passing TDs by sr QB Brady Wilson to tie the game at 28-all with 4 minutes left in the game. The Knights would win the game after drilling a 30-yard FG with just 7.6 seconds left in the game. I didn't get any of the stats for the game.
