Jim Irsay passed Away

The colts have been a tremendous partner with Indiana High School football and this is a very sad day reading this.   Take away from the allegiances of my personal fandom, partnership between the Indianapolis colts and the Indiana High School football, IFCA, ihsaa is best in the NFL hands down.

Yep. Very sad. Mr. Irsay had a huge heart. I suspect his daughters will do everything they possibly can to continue the legacy he leaves on football in Indiana.

I received one of his Twitter giveaways once.  It was a $500 gift card to St. Elmos Steakhouse.  A good guy with a few demons he could never seem to overcome.  RIP Mr. Irsay.

I loved those give aways. And he usually included an animal shelter donation for the winner. My only meager claim to Irsay fame is him liking a reply I made to one of his rock & roll tweets a few years ago.

The man had demons no doubt, but he has to be considered one of the best owners in the NFL, and considering the history of the Colts and the way they ended up in Indianapolis, that's saying something. Rest in peace.

His advocacy of high school sports was top notch. No one questions the size of the man's heart and love for his team and players. I also appreciate that he was never afraid to make his private battles with substance abuse and mental health public. I'm sure that saved lives in an advocacy role.

A few years back, the Naval Academy was playing IU in football in Bloomington.  That day, IU was dedicating the bow of the ship USS Indiana to be placed at the main entrance at Memorial Stadium. A good work friend has a son at the Naval Academy and he was on the tailgate committee.  Problem...the government was in a shutdown and there had been talk earlier about suspending all academies sporting events.  That did not happen, but suffice it to say there were no funds for tailgaiting and for Navy to send some student to this dedication at IU.  Somehow, the idea came to reach out to Mr. Irsay.  Without reservation he funded the dedication and it was quite an event.  Mr. Irsay came down and spoke a few minutes...not a word about himself...all about the beauty of college football and the dedication of our men and women serving.  He didn't stick around long and went back to Indy.

His only stipulation about his donation and genorosity.....not a single word to be spoken to the media.  His only desire was to keep it private, and that they did.  My friend was blown away with Mr. Irsay's actions.  

There is a reason why a number of the Colt players had Jim as the person speaking for them at their HOF induction.  The players loved him.  Pat McAfee's words about Jim Irsay tell us so much about him as a man.  To see Pat torn up over his loss tells you what he meant to the Colts organization.  Prayers for Jim's final rest.
