PENN should think about Indpendence

I've posted often about NIC/NLC/Etc conferences up north.....way past time to adjust.  Looking at just current NIC/NLC, I think this would be a significant improvement:

NIC (7 teams - 2 6A, 4 5A, 1 4A):  Penn, Elkhart, Adams, Concord, Goshen, Warsaw, Washington.

  • Plenty of opportunities to play out of conference schools for Penn.  Gives them Concord & Warsaw annually, so pick up a DAC, SAC, and an Indy/Out of state team.  Goshen will be in the same position they are in the NLC.

NLC (9 teams ....*or 8 teams - all 4A except Marian):  Marian, Mishawaka, New Prarie, NorthRidge, NorthWood, Plymouth, Riley, StJoe, Wawasee.

  • This would be a sluggfest of a 4A conference.  If it goes to eight teams, could still schedule multiiple rivalry games agaisnt former NLC'ers in the newer NIC.

*Now the rumor for a while is that one of those NLC teams wants out...but NE8 nor NECC aren't willing to take them (don't ask me how accurate that is).  If it happened it would bring the NLC back to 8 teams.

I would rather they play the top 3rd of the HCC or MIC. Don’t think the NLC would benefit them as much. They need to consistently see teams on par with what you would see if you happen to make a deep playoff run.

I like your thinking, I think as a while even though it would be a haul to Warsaw, NP would probably prefer to be with Penn and Elkhart rather than the NLC conference. I would prefer we swap Washington and Mishawaka, but we know that will never happen.

I still think Penn wins those games by an average of 25 points in the preposed new NIC.

Costly. Conference makes scheduling easy.

Yes, but if Penn goes Independent in football only with an agreement to keep NIC teams on the schedule....just not all of them every year, that benefits everyone. Washington and Riley dropped to the "small schools" division because they were tired of playing Penn.

My proposal is to play the three SB schools on a rotating basis. Play the two Catholic schools every other year. Drop NP all together. Keep Elkhart for a yearly local 6A matchup.

Work something out with the NLC that makes the Penn Mishawaka game the final game of the season every year. That is 4 local games every year that costs little to nothing to travel.

Go get teams from MI, OH, Indy, FW and the DAC That would be a top schedule every year.

Or, Join the Summit conference and talk them into dropping the crossover games and go to more non-conference games. Since we are technically closer to FT Wayne by 5 miles. 🤣

This is where I am at were I a Penn supporter.  Set up a couple of home and homes with HCC/MIC schools and call it a day.

No disagreement with either of you from a Penn Football perspective.  My post was more centered around something that might actually have a chance of happening that would benefit both the NIC & NLC.  I think the chances of the NIC becoming a "somewhat better" and "smaller" conference (to allow more non-con games) would actually have a realistic chance of happening.
