He simply meant if Notre Dame’s path to a national championship faced significant obstacles that conference members did not, the issue would be reevaluated. IMO, it does. Under the current format, ND can never be an automatic qualifier, and can never get a first round bye. Now, it appears the Committee is placing increased emphasis on participation in conference championship games, making them “no lose” propositions. Even if conference championship games go away - which they are likely to do with an expanded playoff - there are plenty who believe that Notre Dame is able to manipulate its schedule in a way that provides an advantage, which they could not do to that extent if they were members of a conference. And I firmly believe that line of thinking was a factor in the Committee’s disappointing, but understandable, decision. Top 4 seeds get automatic byes, they can absolutely get a first round bye. 46 minutes ago, 23andCounting said: And ultimately made it to the championship game dufus. It's widely accepted that Notre Dame is even better this year. Notre Dame not making it in is what's laughable. They were already a 5.5 point favorite against Oklahoma on the road. Again, Vegas gave Notre Dame the fourth best odds of winning the championship...........AND THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT IN. Lol, good grief. It's good comedy seeing the "haters," you being the most obvious one, trying to justify why the committee was right. Your stock is tanking. Since when did Vegas pick the playoff field? Didn’t Vegas also pick Notre Dame to beat Miami and A&M? Not sure how any of this is relevant? Quote

My first thought too, but as I think about this more, this is a simple way for ND to “fight back”. And I agree with them not participating. Hit them (ncaa/or whomever) in the pocket book. The NCAA doesn't deserve Notre Dame for a bowl game. The Irish are better than an invitation to play BYU at the............Pop Tarts Bowl. I commend Notre Dame for opting out. Why slap the players in the face with a game like that? Quote
Sparty Posted December 7, 2025 Posted December 7, 2025 I’m sure ND has a HUGE chip going into 26. HUGE class coming in. I believe a lot return ( @Bobref ) please correct me if I’m wrong on those two. I was thinking along the lines of Irish great and Hoosier native, Jaylon Smith’s injury. Quote

ND tied themselves partly to mainly the worst teams in an underperforming conference. That is fact. They lost head to head to a team that didn’t win that conference. Their SOS wasn’t great. ND wants it both ways. They want independence, they want the all the money and they want the big dance. Join a conference or win all your games. It’s that simple. To be fair, when they did tie themselves to the conference, Florida State had just won anational championship, and was in the first playoff losing in a semifinal. Clemson lost in the championship the next year, and won it the next year, and lost in a semifinal the following year. They won another championship in 2018 and lost the next year in the championship. I am not so sure anyway saw the conference falling to the point it has now. Just like Notre Dame's schedule. A number of match ups were set several years ago, when teams have been better than they are now. Quote

It's a twelve team field. But most metrics tell us that this years champion will run through the field minus a team that's ranked anywhere from 2-5. Kinda sucks if you ask me. I mean, in order to call yourself the best, shouldn't you have to play the best? If you think I'm the only person who thinks that Notre Dame had a high chance of winning the title this year, then you're a lot dumber than I thought you were.
