South Newton is getting the hang of it.  So far, the Rebels are 3-2 this season and annihilated Danville Schlarman 38-0 for Homecoming.  Although it’s not tackle football in its purest form, they’re having fun out there, and that’s what really matters.

Heard that Wabash cancelled it's 11-man game against county rival Northfield and instead will host Elwood in an 8-man game on 9/25.  Northfield now travels two hours south (with diesel prices around $7) to play Indianapolis Scecina at Roncalli's field.

What a freaking mess.

I'm happy the kids get the chance to play the sport of football.  Unfortunately diesel prices aren't the fault of 15-18 yr olds.

Yeah, I hate when high school kids drive those diesel prices up!! OR is this you bashing 8 man football again??

In this age of scarcity and rising unaffordability school administrators really need to look at the costs of their extracurricular programs.  And that includes transportation costs, which are no longer relatively trivial.

"Unfortunately"?  So you are saying you believe rising diesel prices should be the fault of 15-18 year olds?

I did not make a snarky comment.  This whole 8-man vs. 11-man situation is a mess.  And it could have been avoided had the IHSAA had the cajones to implement a football co-op system.

I won't disagree with IHSAA implementation - I'm just happy at this point that young athletes get the chance to play football.  Its a great sport.

I'm for co-ops and eight-man football.

However, how will the IHSAA sanctioning co-ops affect the growth of eight-man football? It seems athletes would face a choice of playing for their school or playing for some entity without any history or tradition. I think a lot more athletes would choose to represent their school than the faceless entity.

Umm, this "faceless entity" is their school, just combined with another in a similar situation.  

For me it comes down to the fact that 11-man football is a superior game compared to 8-man.  And the IHSAA along with school AD's and coaches should use every tool at their disposal to ensure 11-man is the only option, not some watered-down version of the game.  Frankly it's that or either drop tackle football altogether.  Should boost the numbers available for the soccer team...................

A lot of SN's games are against teams in Illinois.  At least we don't have to deal with their high taxes...

I’m not a fan of co-ops as it is hard to develop teamwork and cohesion with another school.

I'm sure the football co-ops in states like Illinois would have a different opinion regarding teamwork and cohesion. 

8-man is the equivalent of the "Easy Button",  basically an "everyone gets a trophy" mentality.

If I had to guess, diesel prices would be cheaper if everyone in the country played 11-man football.  The superior football game. Because, as you know, oil hides and politicians don't lie when 11-men are on the field as opposed to 8-men.
