    My take on The HCC

HSE - I think this will be the next dominant team in the conference.  Michael Kelly is building a well rounded team that is big and fast and was just a step behind WF this season.

WF - they lose the heart and soul of their team in Hauser, Webster and Williams.  Cant replace those guys overnite.  Will slip a notch or two but too well coached to have an Avon type dive.

BB - it will be another typical BB season.  Plenty of talent.  Solid regular season.  Disappointing post season.

AV - Must shore up the defense.  Program needs a total overhaul and a new identity.  Sometimes coaches are too loyal to long serving staff.  Need some fresh blood

NO - Coach Sharpe is committed to building his power ground game.  Need some conference wins to build confidence.

FI - Middle of the pack program.  Need to build size and strength as they bet pushed around a lot.

FC - Total mystery.  Coach Ward has won big at LC and WC.  Thats why FC hired him.  Track record says he will continue to improve this program and the Flashes should be in contention to compete for a conf title in 2 or 3 years.

ZV - Tough, rugged football team that hangs with the big dogs with 50% less enrollment.  One of the top staffs in the conference.  Could catch cathedral given all the losses CHS is experiencing this year.

I think another interesting dynamic is when the IHSAA releases what they are doing with the classes next year. If Cathedral and Zionsville move up as they should, as well with any other teams experiencing growth (Harrsion, Valpo, Jeffersonville, potentially Whiteland), who will go where in 6A? Which or if any will drop down? There will definitely have to be some movement in sectionals.

    1. Center Grove will reload and revert back to more reliance on its wing t with Tayven Jackson off to Tennessee.  The pipeline is loaded with kids fighting for a position on the varsity.

    2. Carmel - The Hounds never change.  They have the same team every year, plus or minus a D1 player or 2.  Despite CGs current level of dominance, Carmel has more kids currently playing at the next level.

    3. Ben Davis - The Giants need to bring in a defensive specialist to assist Jason Simmons and go back to the basics and teach these kids how to tackle and cover in the secondary.  BD can score with anyone and has great offensive talent.  The staff has a responsibility to coach both sides of the football.  They are not getting it done on defense.

    4. Warren Central - The Warren team I observed in week one was disorganized, unsettled, confused and befuddled.  Did Coach Kirschner get that fixed over the span of the season?  Not sure.  Bottom line.  Talent is way, way down in this program.  The rise of New Pal and Mt Vernon may be coming at the expense of Warren Central.

    5. North Central - The O'Shea Era is likely winding down.  It hasn't worked and it looks like things are getting worse instead of better for the Panthers.  I look for Coach O'Shea to take the Tom Dilley route and head back to a PP

    6. LC and LN - the two will battle it out for leadership of Lawrence Township.  That is the ceiling for both programs.

    8. Pike - Pike should take a run at Mike Gillin and see if he might be interested in one final stop on his Hall of Fame journey.  Pike needs a new identity, a niche that separates them from the other schools in The MIC.  The school has athletes, and Gillin is a QB whisperer who will seek out and find his gunslinger.  A wide open long ball passing attack with Pike athletes coached by Gillin and his staff would put a scare into MIC defensive coordinators.  If Gillin says no, go after Nick Hart at Gibson Southern.  He is a MIC caliber coach running a 3A program.  Time to see what he can do with the big boys in the big city.

I find it hard to believe Mike Gillin will leave Mooresville.

    This is probably true.

From the 2020 fall count day, here were the bottom 10 of 6A (with 32 schools) and the top 10 of 5A.  The numbers are close enough, especially among the schools that had 2000-2100, that there could be some shuffling if realignment actually happens.

    23 Portage 2301
    24 Lawrence Central 2268
    25 Zionsville 2151
    26 Jeffersonville 2134
    27 Columbus North 2090
    28 Indianapolis Arsenal Tech 2089
    29 Chesterton 2081
    30 Lafayette Jefferson 2066
    31 Warsaw 2059
    32 Harrison (West Lafayette) 2050

    1 Fort Wayne Northrop 2046
    2 Valparaiso 2035
    3 Merrillville 2022
    4 Whiteland 2007
    5 Goshen 1973
    6 South Bend Adams 1949
    7 Castle 1884
    8 Floyd Central 1867
    9 New Albany 1859
    10 Fort Wayne Snider 1830

I think Columbus North will be interesting to see where they go. They are on the bubble of dropping down to 5A. Would definitely have a chance to make a tourney run.

  4. If we wanted to add another element into this we could discuss the closure of Conference Indiana. This would affect the best 3 central Indiana conferences. Here is my take if this all happened in the future and what would be the best options best off of the schools. (Obviously I know this all would never happen, but I think it is fun to play around with):

HCC- Westfield, Noblesville, Zionsville, Fishers, HSE, Brownsburg, Avon, Carmel, Center Grove.

MIC- Warren Central, North Central, Ben Davis, Pike, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Franklin Central, Southport, Perry Meridian, Decatur Central.

Mid-State- Greenwood, Whiteland, Franklin, Plainfield, Mooresville, Martinsville, Columbus North, Bloomington North, Bloomington South

If the inevitable occurs, what does the MIC try and do, to replace Carmel and CG?

I think the MIC for sure would try and round up the rest of the township schools.

Franklin Central for sure would be the best option, Southport and Perry will never join as they are so far behind athletically, Decatur Central is an intriguing one as they are a growing program in football and basketball. Would love to see the Hawks join however I don't see them wanting to leave the Mid State.

Tech would be another option, but I also find it hard to believe them wanting to join. I think they should though.

Cathedral would be a stretch, but it definitely would work. However as others have mentioned their facilities might hold them back as the MIC has some of the best facilities in the state.

It's not. It would have happened by now.

But we insist on having a yearly discussion about it to keep the tradition alive.

It will be within a couple to 3 years. Many excellent sources from AD's to principals have discussed this and it is on the horizon. However, these type of things don't happen in just half a year.

Does it really matter that he got hurt? What is the reaction if Biddings and/or Carroll showed up to Cathedral for their senior year? There isn't a chance in hell the IHSAA is giving them immediate varsity eligibility and this board would have a 40 page thread on how Cathedral "cheats". This happens at public schools all the time and it's completely swept under the rug.

There is also quite a bit of difference to me when a kid actually moves into a district rather than driving and commuting to a school.

I didn't say Cathedral or anybody cheated. I was just stating a kid did not play after game 4.

Center Grove was "blessed" with not one, but TWO, D1 transfers this offseason as one year rentals. One is committed to a school that is likely going to be in the CFB playoffs and the other to an ACC school. Everybody is taking advantage of open-enrollment. Cathedral is hurt more than they are helped by open-enrollment. Prior to open-enrollment you played within your district or you ponied up to go to a private school. Today, you can be the #1 rated QB in the nation living in Avon where your older brother plays football while playing Brownsburg or you can play at Brownsburg for 3 years and transfer to Center Grove for your senior season.

One of those kids only played 3 and a half games. So really after game 4 he was not used at all.

Zionsville is the other school that I keep hearing about as far as movement.  If they go up to 6A along with Harrison as @foxbat mentioned, that means at least 1 must come down.  (I think there were only 31 in 6A?)

There were 32. I know Tech will have a dropped enrollment and expect them to bump down. Also, Jeffersonville is the same size as Columbus North. Merrillville has dropped too. Would love to see these numbers soon.

  10. With the season concluded, I am interested to see the new enrollments with the schools. The DOE numbers are still showing from last October 2020. I would like to see the new updated enrollments and start figuring out the schools moving up or down. Anyone know where these can be found at? Obviously the IHSAA has these because of them showing the enrollment sizes during the state finals this weekend.

Our turn to play at your house.

What is interesting, is should we (hopefully) move to 6A it looks like a forgone conclusion we will fall in the Section 8 sectional as there are only two other teams besides you guys (Columbus North, Franklin Central).  That means next year we could conceivably draw each other in the first game of sectional.  Cant imagine either program possibly not playing in month of November next year!

    Congrats on great season.

I would bet they would not fall into the same sectional. They would adjust the sectionals and create new ones. With Zionsville to 6A as well, there will definitely be some interesting sectionals put together this winter.

How’d that workout when Merrillville scheduled CHATARD in 2020?

Win those ones first, otherwise beating the MIC in the regular season and tournament is a pipe dream.

At some point it will have to be done though. CG and Warren have Week 2 openings in 2022. Merrillville should make this happen.

That young man is one incredible athlete......

Did you see the Twitter feed of last weeks game of Curry from the DL running down a receiver when LN executed a successful hook and ladder??  You can see from the video that Curry while still in the LOS area recognizes what is going on before the lateral and takes off like a shot out of a cannon, to run the play down from behind.  The young man has incredible speed to go with his football smarts.....pure hustle play.....

Curry needs to be Mr. Football. Nobody is as dominant and as talented.

What happened to that?  I noticed they didn’t have the thing up for which day is 1,3,5A

This was something they started last year. However, when they announced the game times it was still 1,3,5 and 2,4,6. I would rather them just keep it how it is. No disrespect to other classes, but I just feel the biggest classes should end the night.
