    Enrollment/Classification News

We’re now in the part of the tournament where success factor points get handed out with each win. Keep an eye on these as it will have an impact on who’s in what classification next year. 6 points in a cycle moves you up a classification . If you’re already playing up, 2 points keeps you in that classification for the next two-year cycle.

    6A schools

    - Columbus East (0 points) will remain in 6A with a semi-state appearance. Anything short of that drops them back to 5A.

    5A schools

    - New Palestine (4 points) has already met the 2 point threshold required to remain in 5A. However, they can move up to 6A with a semi-state appearance.

    - Fort Wayne Dwenger (2 points) has already met the 2 point threshold required to remain in 5A. However, they can move up to 6A with a state title.

    - Valparaiso (3 points) can move up to 6A with a state finals appearance.

    - Cathedral (1 point) can remain in 5A with a sectional title. A loss this Friday drops them back to 4A.

    4A schools

    - Evansville Memorial (4 points) has already met the 2 point threshold required to remain in 4A. However, they can move up to 5A with a semi-state appearance.

    - East Noble (3 points) can move up to 5A with a state finals appearance.

    - Hobart (2 points) can move up to 5A with a state title.

    - Mount Vernon (Fortville) can move up to 5A with a state title.

As far as enrollments go, here are the schools that could move up or down a classification based on the enrollment info for the current classification cycle.

Lowest 6A enrollments (excluding Columbus East)

    Warsaw 2,103

    Lafayette Jeff 2,063

    Columbus North 2,063

    Chesterton 2,063

    Zionsville 2,055

    Highest 5A enrollments

    Valparaiso 2,054

    Jeffersonville 2,035

    Fort Wayne Northrop 2,032

    Harrison (West Lafayette) 1,979

    Castle 1,965

Lowest 5A enrollments (excluding New Palestine, Fort Wayne Dwenger, and Cathedral)

    Fort Wayne North 1,550

    Seymour 1,522

    Munster 1,521

    Mishawaka 1,477

    BNL 1,471

    Highest 4A enrollments

    Huntington North 1,459

    Greenfield-Central 1,453

    Martinsville 1,435

    Northridge 1,397

    Pendleton Heights 1,383

    Evansville Reitz 1,378

    Mooresville 1,372

    Fort Wayne Wayne 1,369

Seymour had two anomaly classes a few years back, like over 100 students larger than normal classes. That being said, younger classes are starting to come in, I would expect Seymour to stay 5A for the foreseeable future, but they could drop to 4A for one cycle. I know they are looking at several options to deal with growing enrollment, including building a new 5/6 grade building. The growth is largely Hispanic, last figure I heard was 32% of enrollment.

It has taken many times thinking about posting this. My dad was my coach for many years. He was always harder on me than anyone else. He knew what the perception was of a dad coaching a son. It wasn't easy but it was worth it. Some of the old timers on here might remember him as HuskyWarrior. He passed away about a month ago and as I am preparing for our first round game this week I could not help but think of him. Those from Nobelsville, Warren Central, and Hamilton Heights might remember best. But if you ever went to a Bishop Dullaghan camp from 2000-2010 there is a good chance you met him coaching there.  https://www.newsandtribune.com/sports/high-school-football-a-coach-called-dad/article_db7b826c-fed8-11ea-a4bc-af1810763fe0.html

Also, I would like to thank the coaching community who reached out to me the week of his passing.

Awesome article coach, thanks for sharing.

    Congrats to:

    4A

Roncalli (John Rodenberg) who ended the season as #2 in 4A per Sagarin.  Between their coach (who has some modest experience with parochials) and their constant team improvement, I consider them the favorite to represent the South at LOS.  In any event, I expect the 4A South Semi-State to be the State Championship....don’t let me down.

We all know how much that pained you to post!

If, as often happens, they announce to the officials/opposing team that they’re going to take a knee ... and then do something else, that’s not going to be allowed. That’s the one time an inadvertent whistle comes in handy. 😉

On the other hand, if they just line up in a formation, it’s “play football.”

I will usually ask the QB, we don’t announce it, but if the QB says he’s taking a knee, I tell him nothing squirrelly, go down. That being said, earlier in the year, we had a really quick whistle that lead to the QB keeping his word.

Since we are rarely mic'd up for HS games you are often left in the dark on what happened on some plays. There are times we really wish we had a mic to explain what happened.

Needed one last night. Pre-planned fake punt the coach told us about pre-game. Kicker is running to his left looked to me like he panicked and does some kind of half ass kick on the run with a potential tackler committed to tackling him. We all know where this is headed. The coach completely understood, but boy the fans couldn’t believe I missed that one right in front of me.

Do you have a favorite stadium to officiate in? If so, what is it and what makes it so great?

Never really thought much about that, always enjoy going places that take care of the stripes, some really seem to take pride in it. What can I say, most officials are prima donnas, a program, a clean towel, some water, a candy bar, something to eat after the game are really appreciated. As I said some schools really take pride in this, some schools clearly view us as a necessary evil, and don’t put much effort into it.

As far as stadiums, in no particular order:

    East Central

    Roncalli

    Enlow Field

    CG

    Linton

    Heritage Hills

    New Albany

    Gibson Southern

Jasper, though I miss the pregame pop in from Coach Brewer in the locker room.

***Reitz Bowl*** has been on my bucket list, we were suppose to be there this year, but a software glitch screwed the pooch, we will be there next year.

Brownstown can be fun for big games with the crowd on Elm Street.

I like different stadiums for different reasons, some are just cool stadiums, some have a very football savvy crowd, some have a big crowd regardless of the game. Nothing more fun for me than a tournament game or a big rivalry game with full stands, temp bleachers, and stacked about 3 deep all around the track. Friday nights are fun for me regardless of where we are or what game we’re doing, but some do have a cherry on top.

Working at larger venues does have a novelty, but the novelty wears off quickly for me. Game times are off, it’s not on the schools’s campus, and you’re kinda left to fend for yourself. LOS isn’t bad, but you need three goats and a Sherpa to get to the dressing room. RCA was probably my fave as far as working the game. The old Cardinal Stadium at the Fairgrounds in Louisville was a dump with a horrible surface. Our dressing room was thru the first base dugout, and as soon as you walked out the door you were literally in livestock stalls.

  8. I think one thing that gets lost in all this, hopefully by week 7 teams have been steadily improving. Perhaps we don't really see that watching the home team every week and whoever they may be playing. We had a pretty good team Friday night, we also had them week 2. From week 2 to week 6 they had gotten a LOT better in my opinion. They won both games, played a lot better opponent in week 2, but still you can tell, they're much crisper, block a little better, tackle a little better, everything is just sharper.

Best of luck to everyone in week 7, we're in the home stretch, I never figured we'd have gotten this far.

  9. Yea*

I've seen it done well, and I've seen it done miserably.

I coached my daughter in Softball. I think we both would agree it went pretty well. We both shared a passion for a sport, and that was really cool. At a time when most of my contemporaries barely spoke to their daughters, I felt like we not only talked, but I felt like she still valued what I had to say, or was interested in my opinion. It doesn't come without it's downfalls, she was a pretty good player, never really got the accolades from the coach in the paper that she deserved, When games got out of hand either way, she was always the first to sit, so others could play, she was the one that got yelled at practice, many times to make a point to another kid who I knew I couldn't yell at. She knew she always had to do more than everyone else, and I think she accepted that and went above and beyond.  I didn't coach her travel team, so I think that helped. I thought both of us did a really good job of separating the dad/daughter coach/player relationships. There were always nay sayers, we both heard the snarky comments, "the only reason she wins all those awards is because her dad's the coach", that sort of crap. As I said many times, the people who mattered got it, and the ones who didn't get it, didn't matter.

Now with all that being said, the day she graduated, my coaching gig got a LOT easier.

MS and youth, it's probably a necessary evil at most schools. Qualified coaches are not standing in line to take those jobs. Depending on the situation, the HC or someone has to lay out a clearly defined plan and have expectations for how the program will run.

It was 4th down.  Went back and watched film and it was very close but I would say that the Dlineman was slightly behind the LOS when attempting to field the punt.  The ball was recovered by K team behind the LOS.

1st and 10 for R at the spot the kick ended.
