Had I been observing this game, in the post-game review with the crew I definitely would have asked them if they talked about disqualification at the time and, if so, what their thought process was in coming to a decision. There are a lot of factors that go into that decision, as @Yuccaguypointed out, some of them pretty subtle. It’s not one to make lightly.

Agreed, WE have ALWAYS taken USC on coaches and ejections very serious. I tend to agree with @Yuccaguytone and tenor of the game plays into this particular decision. Just curious others’ take on just the tape we’ve seen.

I think rather than not being smart, officials are still clinging to the idea that they have an obligation to the kids … and to the game. But the numbers of officials are so low that there is no safety margin. It would only take 15-20% of the football officials in the state to say that they were not going to work unless — fill in the blank: pay is increased, or certain security measures are implemented, or the manner in which officials are selected for the tournament is changed, or we get to use pink beanbags, or whatever — to bring the system to a crashing halt, and require lots of rescheduling.

Let me be clear. I’m not advocating that officials unionize, or engage in some sort of job action. But the powers that be ignore the possibility at their own peril.

I agree, but look at Lee County FL last year. To be honest I’m not sure how it turned out ultimately.
I agree 100% if officials were to act, it’s the kids who ultimately suffer, and at the end of the day, that’s why we’re ALL here.
I will also say I’m a lot more selective choosing assignments.

You know, this sort of thing comes at a tricky time. Don’t think officials are not closely monitoring what comes next in situations like these. And by a “tricky time,” I mean the continuing shortages has given officials huge power … that they have shown no inclination to use … yet. But officials have a scarce resource that is much in demand. If the local officiating association refused to work games at that school until certain measures relating to officials’ safety and security were implemented, it’s not like the school can just go out and hire replacements. Beware waking the sleeping giant.

And officials aren’t smart enough to realize all this.

Just curious but what are all of the rivalries (intra-conference and non-conference) in the HHC? Here’s what I know:

    Columbus East vs Columbus North

    Jennings County vs Madison

    Jennings County vs Seymour

    Seymour vs Brownstown Central

    Floyd Central vs New Albany

    Jeffersonville vs New Albany

    Am I missing anything?

Back in the day Seymour’s rivalries were JC and Columbus (North). Obviously Seymour didn’t play Brownstown for many years. East traditionally was never much of a rivalry, as they were non-conference. I can remember some of this battles, it was heated.

  5. My daughter’s senior year in college, in the conference tournament Coach made somewhat odd decision at the end of the game, that ended up working out, to be honest I don’t even remember what it was. After the game I ran into Coach, and he asked me “did I make the right decision?”  I just told him, you know Coach, I’m undefeated from the stands, I’m sure you made the right call.

If Seymour wasn’t afraid of playing East, I’m sure they’re not afraid of playing Floyd Central. If anything, they’d want to play them to try and keep the momentum going. There’s not a conspiracy here.

I have no insider information, I do know that Seymour’s JV and V locker rooms are segregated. It is my understanding there are issues with V only. Jackson County just got moved to red per the state blah, blah, blah.
To be honest I haven’t even seen anything locally about the V game not happening yet.

Do the specific numbering rules actually apply to junior high ball? I've seen quite a few instances where there are not 5 lineman numbers on the line as well as lineman numbers out wide.

MS ball has in the past and still yet possibly at some schools struggle with jersey/size/number issues. It’s way worse in youth leagues. Officials have been historically, at least in this area, inclined to allow jacked up numbers. This typically only applies to 1, possibly 2 players. In the past this has gone on in Frosh and JV as well. I literally have worked JV games with 13-14 players and a couple of them have limited quarters. All that being said, with HS, my philosophy has changed a little bit over the years, if I have to get decked out in full uniform, the players have to as well.

Hey I understand. And I can respect you having a different opinion. I’m just behind these kids and I want to see them taste some success. I will always 100% back up the kids on that team. But I do agree that playing Oldham County would be better than sitting at home on Friday night.

See guys, that’s how you guys (BoilerFan87) respectfully disagree with someone.

Will someone please take his shovel, he doesn’t seem to know when to quit digging.

Dang it. All eight teams made it through unscathed last year. What a bummer.

We have been fortunate, we’ve only had one game cancelled due to COVID and we were able to fill it with a game that needed emergency officials. We even ended up with two games a couple of weeks ago with the weather issues. I know a crew out of Columbus who didn’t work their first game last year until week 5.

The problem with us East fans is we’ve been overly spoiled by 17 seasons of tremendous success. I barely remember East football before 2004 because I didn’t have a reason to follow them. My love of high school sports didn’t begin until I was in high school. We went 7-5 my freshman year (2003 season) and then the team took off after that.

Fair enough, but some of us are old enough to remember Columbus High School and have loved HS sports that long.

I’m not going to get on here and bash Coach Vogel though. I know the guy and am aware of how much he contributed to the success of the team behind Coach Gaddis. To be fair to him, this team has the least amount of talent and depth I’ve seen (Again, I didn’t truly start following until 2003). We should’ve seen this downfall coming. I think we did but most of us didn’t want to accept it.

You didn’t have to be a soothsayer to know it. Both Columbus MS’s have struggled for several years. PAAL has faced numbers issues, or at the very least declining numbers.

On the flip-side, I’m not seeing the same amount of energy or swagger I’m used to seeing from East. I’m with @Olympian06 in that I also believe Gaddis would’ve figured out how to protect the lead last night and pull out a win. Regardless, this team was going to lose an HHC game whether it was last night or sometime down the road this season. The players are the ones that have to execute the game plan and they just seem to lack the talent to do so.

My biggest concern about all of this is we have a very fickle fan base. When we aren’t winning, we don’t show up unless it’s the rivalry game against Columbus North. The new home stands that were built before the 2014 season, I’ve slowly seen them become less and less filled since 2018, maybe 2019. A bad East team is really going to hurt attendance. On top of that, there’s not a lot of excitement anyway because the students aren’t allowed to be. Not going to name any names for the reason why but, in my opinion, it’s ridiculous and only hurts us.

This what I was referring to, it takes a tremendous amount of money to compete at the top levels in ant sport. A chunk of that money comes from asses in the seats. Which helps build a program, people showing up every Friday and the football game being an event, or people staying home bitching about how bad the team is, kids see this, learn from this, etc. I agree 100%, students today are not allowed to have fun. I’m all about good sportsmanship, but geez let the students have some fun, it’s THEIR GAME!

Nevertheless, I’ll still be at East games when I can. That won’t change. And if we are going to fall off the HHC pedestal, I hope more fans of other HHC teams will join or return to this message board. I like the five of you or so who get on here and interact, but it would be nice to see fans of Seymour, Jennings County, New Albany, and Jeffersonville as well.

    Agreed.

Chatard will beat East by 50… that is literally zero exaggeration in that prediction.

Not sure about that. Chatard has definitely struggled to start the season, much like the teams in the HHC. They are clearly getting better, as will the teams in the conference as the season progresses.

I will be honest the amount of coach bashing since last night is a little disappointing to me, particularly from the CE fans, who seem to be a little more educated than some of the others. Coach Vogel has been an integral part of the coaching staff during CE’s run. During the last few years probably a much more integral part as a coordinator than the HC, and that’s not a slight on anybody, it’s just how established programs operate.

You people doing all the bitching about coaching are exactly one of the reasons schools in this conference struggle with football. Instead of bitching about how bad your coaching staff is doing, what are you doing to support your program?  @Fkfootball throwing money at the problem isn’t always the answer, if it were we’d have no drug or poverty problems in this country. I was at East Central last night, and EC has had some mediocre seasons over the years, but the stands are always full, it’s a rocking environment, and last night they spent about 25 minutes introducing their youth players. The youth players were in their game jerseys, out on the field with the team for warmups, etc. EC got pretty much physically whipped in the game, I haven’t seen the first post bitching about their coaching staff. EC routinely plays GCL teams and gets physically whipped, and you don’t see their fans posting anonymously bitching about it.

Wins and losses are not the messing stick when it comes to measuring the success of a high school program. What kind of young people are they producing? That’s the measuring stick.

Here’s a fun game. The HHC is 0-12 in non-conference games so far. When are we going to get our first win? Will we ever get a win? How many games will we win?

Week 4: Jeffersonville (1-1) at Mount Vernon (Posey) (3-0)

Week 5: Madison (1-2) at Jennings County (0-3)

Week 6: Brownstown Central (3-0) at Seymour (1-2)

Week 7: Columbus East (0-3) at Indianapolis Chatard (0-3)

    Week 8: Madison (1-2) at BNL (1-2)

    Week 9: Seymour (1-2) at Madison (1-2)

Chatard is the best winless team in the state. I don’t care what @Lysandersays.
