The Road to Paradise by Thom Wilder Just as the film Hoosiers captured the poignant spirit of Indiana high school basketball, The Road to Paradise tells the story of an unlikely and unexpected football champion - an unproven team without a football pedigree. Considered to be a team that could never seriously contend with the powerhouse schools from northern Indiana, the underdog 1982 Castle Knights of the tiny southern Indiana town of Paradise capped off a magical undefeated season with a championship that the experts in such matters said was impossible. The Road to Paradise is the story of that season and high school football in Indiana. It's the story of all that happened before and all that would happen after for a team, a school and a community at a crossroads. It's not so much a story about winning, but about refusing to lose. It's the recipe of how champions are made. Chicago-based writer Thom Wilder is a journalist, teacher and sports a aficionado. He has been a published writer for the last quarter century, reporting on politics, business, law and government at the local, state and federal level for a variety of Chicago, national and international news organizations. Wilder grew up in the Castle High School feeder community of Chandler, Indiana, receiving a journalism degree from Indiana University and a law degree from Loyola University Chicago. Wilder began his journalism career at 15 when he joined the staff of his high school newspaper, The Lancer, and quickly became Sports Editor and Managing Editor, giving him a front row seat for the Castle Knights' march to their 1982 state championship. https://www.amazon.com/Road-Paradise-Knights-Indianas-Football/dp/1457512599/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1643829831&sr=8-1 -
The SIAC Thread
Paradise1960 replied to TigerFan20's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
A farmer in Paradise (Newburgh), IN donated/sold some of his land to the Warrick County School Corporation. The farmer's last name was "Castle". The state game you are referring to against Portage was 1994. -

Bryan Neale also played football at Castle. He was a B10 official from 2006-2013. He officiated the 2007 Cotton Bowl, 2008 Gator Bowl, and the 2011 National Championship. He began officiating in the NFL in 2014, and this will be his first Super Bowl. -
Under Coach John Lidy, who coached Castle for 30 years, Castle only won the SIAC title 4 (5) times. 1975 SIAC "B" - did not include the city teams 1982 - 3A State Champions 1983 1984 - Co-Champions - tied with Mater Dei. Both teams did not play each other that year 2002 Not sure what is meant by having the most resources. They don't even have field turf. There seems to be more to it than meets the eye.

It does seem really odd. Word around our community is it's for athletic reasons and both parents work in Warrick County. I'm not sure how he will be eligible.

Naming Stadiums/Fields after Coaches?
Paradise1960 replied to hhpatriot04's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Castle High School - Castle Stadium - John Lidy Field - Head Coach John Lidy 1973-2002 (209-112); 2 State Championships 1982 3A and 1994 5A -
Let's put things in perspective...when Coach John Lidy was head coach at Castle, the only times they won the SIAC title were in the following years: 1975 - SIAC "B" League Champions (great team, but they didn't play the city schools) 1982 1983 1984 - Co-SIAC Champions (did not play Mater Dei that year and MD was the other Co-SIAC Champion 2002 - 18 seasons later Since then, Castle won the title in 2011 and 2012. Since 1973 Lidy's first year as HC and until now through 2 more HCs, it's been the ebbs and flows of high school football. Every program goes through them. Go Knights!

Best helmet in Indiana
Paradise1960 replied to Sports_Aaron's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I'm a little partial to this helmet. Castle High School's football helmet hasn't changed a whole lot in 47 years (1973-2020). The Castle "C" on both sides with 2 navy blue stripes and a 1 yellow stripe down the middle. Go Knights! -
Best Stadium/Venue in the state
Paradise1960 replied to Indiana Fan's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
These two stadiums are not in Indiana, but if you are a fan of seeing other high school football stadiums you need to visit Lahaina, Maui Hawaii. The view of the ocean and island of Lanai is amazing. Also visit East High School, Salt Lake, Utah. This is where the movies High School Musical was filmed. My daughters wanted to see the high school so while they were touring the school, I was checking out the football stadium. The stadium is nothing fancy, but the mountains in the background are spectacular. -

Evansville Memorial and Evansville Mater Dei (2A) both have field turf on their practice fields at both schools, but they play their home games at different locations that have field turf as well. -
