Defense? All you gotta do is score more than the other team! 😁 -

I don't know what South returns, but they are always a solid program. You also can't discount that nearly two hour road trip NA will have to go on. New Albany should have some expectations in front of them, but it doesn't mean a win is a guarantee. I'd expect a good game. -

Who does everyone in the HHC scrimmage this week? Does Floyd still scrimmage Charlestown? Brownstown vs JC? Good luck to all. -

LOL I was thinking about it when we started our pick 'ems for this year. That way it'll be easier to navigate the smack talk "competitive banter" between @Frozen Tundra and I. 😆 -
I'll stop short of predicting the order of finish of either league, but I think Creek's losses will be too much for them to overcome to regain the MSC crown. I think it will be wide open, perhaps as much as it has been in years. But I still think it will be one of Charlestown, Brownstown or North Harrison. I do not know what Salem lost versus what they return, though. My understanding was that Corydon had quite a bit of losses in their senior class, but they do return some talented skill guys. I also do not know what Scottsburg returns. Did Salem ever pick up a week 5 game? I do think Paoli has to be the favorite in the PLAC but Perry may challenge. I think WW will be in good shape in the long run with Lowery, but since they lost a ton, it may take a year to get back to where they are used to being. But they have such a foundation, it would still not surprise me if they came in and won the league again.

Hoosier Hills Conference

Lol.. I coached there for a while and I still keep up with things as best I can. We went to the state finals every year and you didnt go without hearing stories about Coach Hilton and his program. He actually retired from 2011-2015, but couldn't stay away and has been back since. They lost the state title in 2019 and played in the semifinals last year. -

Yeah that's fair, and I can't say what Bell is returning. Their coach is the Kentucky version of Bud Wright from Sheridan. They are old school and will be the most physical team Jeff will see all year. -

I would agree almost entirely, but I would put Jeffersonville ahead of Seymour because Bell County is a really tough program. I also think Mount Vernon is an underrated opponent, as the PAC folks seem to think of them as a dark horse kind of team. Jeff has to go to MV, which will be quite a haul. East always plays a tough schedule and I think that helps them in the post season. It's nice to see New Albany and Floyd schedule tough. Like Male, Dupont Manual is a magnet school in Louisville, which means students have to apply to get in, so both school almost have this private school kind of vibe going for them, which seems to benefit them in athletics. Manual has won at least 9 games in 3 of the past 6 seasons, so they are always solid. I love the NA/GS matchup. I think it could go either way. -
Pike Central Needs a Week 1 Opponent

Coach, Louisville Waggener needs a week 1 game this year (8/20/21). They said they are willing to travel. The coach can be reached at tye.lawson2@jefferson.kyschools.us. They are a 3a/4a school in recent cycles of classification. https://scoreboard.12dt.com/scoreboard/khsaa/kyfb20/?id=83766 -
Greenwood Christian Considering FB
boilerfan87 replied to BDGiant93's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Was Covenant Christian foolish? They started in 2014. Went 2-5 in 2015. They went 15-0 and won the 1a state title just 5 years later. I don't expect you to agree and I understand the risk of failure exists, but if they have the desire and the funds to give it a shot, there is no reason they shouldn't. -

Perhaps they see it as an chance to provide more opportunities for their students and potentially increase enrollment as a result. The more schools that can offer football, the better. I hope it works out for them. -
Cody French Hired at Calumet
boilerfan87 replied to HanShotFirst's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Teaching/coaching contracts aren't typically signed until the beginning of the school year, so it is unlikely anything other than board approval had taken place. I would doubt he will owe anything to Niles as a result. -

Boone County is a large school, a 5A by Kentucky standards. Their enrollment is around 1800 or so. They have struggled mightily over the last decade or so. They used to be a power in the 90s. Alabama RB Shaun Alexander went to school there. -
The one who was at Washington from 04-14? If so, great hire. Congrats.

Shhhh... you can't say that word on here! lol I just can't get the Kentucky district system out of my brain. And they never could even out the districts with team numbers so there was still some fudging with the schedule. However, there were only 3-4 locked in games so there is still a ton of flexibility in scheduling. -

Yes, I know what you are saying. If the even numbered conferences did this then the odd numbered conferences would be able to play in those off weeks against each other. There is no magic solution to the scheduling problem, unless we just go with all even numbered districts and drop conferences 😁 -

I just meant hypothetically, not specific to the HHC. If all conferences played their conference schedule at the later part of the year, then most people would be relatively on the same page to play out of conference games. -

I agree, it does make it easier. The MSC was in a tough spot with only 1 opening because it forced everyone to have a different off week, making it very challenging to find opponents. Same for the HHC as of late. It'd be nice to shift the conference schedule to the later weeks of the year, like 4-9 being all conference games. I also agree, it is nice to change up who you are playing. It is neat to face a different team and have a different challenge. -

I know you're asking Dante, but I'm definitely not a fan. It gives you no flexibility in your scheduling. It'd be nice to have 3 out of conference games to schedule as you like for purposes of scheduling to what your program needs. If you're trying to rebuild a program, schedule 3 winnable games. If you've built the program and want to take the next step, schedule a really good team and two others that are a toss up. Just an example. -

Columbus North and Chatard could beat either one of those teams. Might Male be favored? Sure. But they would be pretty good games. For instance, Cal Preps has Chatard over Male in 2019 (latest data set). Plus, East also plays Whiteland who is coming off of a 9-2 season and is a solid 5a program. Jeffersonville is set to play Bell County (KY). Bell County is a smaller school but is a perennial state power. New Albany plays Bloomington North and South. They also play Gibson Southern, which has been a top notch 3a program in Indiana over the last decade. FC will play a tough schedule. Good for them. It doesn't make it the best or toughest. -
Is there a coaching shortage brewing?
boilerfan87 replied to a topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I'm not sure if shortage is the right word, but even 5-10 years ago, it was not easy to fill a staff with qualified individuals. This can be especially true in more rural areas. If prospective coaches aren't teachers, who actually has the luxury of a schedule that will allow them to work around practice and game times? What about the year round stuff? Anywhere I coached, much of the staff was not able to be there year round or chose not to be. Ideally, everyone is there all the time to reflect that all-in atmosphere. But that is often not realistic. At the end of the day, staffs may get filled, but it may be with individuals who can run a drill or maybe just be a body to monitor a group. Coaching is not easy. It is generally thankless and it is not something you do for money. There will always be people who want to be a coach. There are far fewer that are willing to do what it takes. -
I would argue school boards are more impactful, particularly in smaller communities, or one-horse communities. Often times, admin's hands are tied because of policies or impacts they know can come from the board. A good school board that works well together and has a progressive vision can do wonders for any school district.
