New matchups for 2021

I did not realize the (little) MIC had dissolved. What led to that? I guess the other schools are just independent now? -

Thanks for the clarification. I thought that was odd. Coach Parker did a nice job getting them going late last year and should feel good about the momentum for the program going forward. -

An interesting note... John Harrell's now lists under coaching changes that Grant Zgunda is the new coach at Jeffersonville High School. He was the head coach at Delta from 2002-2015. I did not know that Coach Parker had even stepped down. I haven't seen that info anywhere else, but Harrell doesn't tend to post something that isn't accurate. If that is indeed the case, that is a heck of a coup. He has over 140 career victories. -
Why is that? I can certainly see the point in football just because of what I discussed prior in this thread with the lack of flexibility in the schedule because of the number of teams. But it may also make for a difficult time filling the schedule being indepedent. I think in basketball and other sports it could be a great fit.

It is behind a paywall, but the Madison Courier ran an article suggesting it was the time for them to join the MSC with the departure of Clarksville. Geographically it does make sense. Enrollment wise it does as well. They'd be at the upper echelon of the enrollments for the conference, but still 100 or so students below Silver Creek. Thoughts?

New matchups for 2021

Highland has 5 seasons since 1994 that are above .500. Koulianos did a nice job at Hanover Central and is working to build the program. Times change and demographics change and perhaps this is the case with Highland. A win to start the season, regardless of who it is, could provide a springboard for the rest of the year. Besides, Whiting is 3 years removed from a sectional title and 6 years removed from a state title appearance. They are a very solid 1a program. Once he gets the program on solid ground, it is logical to think they can schedule up again. -

Not personally. Just from being in the business and coaching against him while he was at BNL. -

Looking for Scrimmage August 13th
boilerfan87 replied to Coach19's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
The rule may have changed but several years ago, Indiana teams were not allowed to scrimmage an out of state opponent. I think it had something to do with ensuring that teams stuck to the two approved formats for the scrimmage. While I understand that, I do wish that rule would change as it could make it easier to find scrimmage opponents. -
The district is pretty locked with no where to expand (though they are building several new, large apartments). The rumor mills like to churn about a consolidation, but the history of the place resists it. It is not unrealistic to think it could happen at some point, I just don't see it in the near future. I am pretty sure the board voted against them leaving the PLAC. The nice thing for them is the PLAC is small so they have plenty of opportunities to schedule as they please for half of their schedule. I think that was the issue for Clarksville, particularly in football. Not only were they the smallest school, but the size of the conference left them with no out of conference games, except with their rival, Providence. Providence's schedule is always changing. I am surprised they haven't worked out a game with you guys yet. I think it'd be a great annual matchup.

Since we are here in 2021 and we have some interesting news I thought I'd get this one going. Clarksville is officially leaving the MSC (link). They will still play some of the conference teams (Scottsburg, Charlestown, Brownstown) but will now play some PLAC members as well (West Washington, Crawford, Perry) in addition to their traditional rivalry with Providence (who now has more of an MSC flair to their schedule as they will play Charlestown, Corydon and North Harrison). Schedule changes will be abound, which will certainly makes things different and possibly more interesting. There does not appear to be much coaching turnover between the two leagues this year, as only West Washington will feature a new, but familiar name at HC. Springs Valley will also have a new HC, though they have not named one at this time. What should we expect from each league and what questions have to be answered? MSC - Brownstown will be their typical top notch program. Silver Creek looks to build on their best season in school history and defend their title, but must do so with some big losses from their senior class. How will Salem be after a very solid first year under Coach Thompson? Can Charlestown bounce back from an unusually challenging year? North Harrison continues to be a challenger for everyone. I am not sure how much they return. Corydon saw some great improvement. Will they continue? How do Scottsburg and Eastern look and do they return much? PLAC - Does West Washington continue their dominance under a new coach? Can Paoli challenge WW? Perry is always right there as well. Can Mitchell bounce back from a down year? Will a new coach at Valley bring some new energy? After trying to get out of the conference, can Crawford continue to build in year two under Coach Bell? They were able to add Switz County, Eastern and Clarksville to their schedule in addition to already having a game with Rock Creek. NOT MSC/PLAC but close - Will a new schedule for Clarksville provide some momentum going forward? Coach Boser has done a nice job improving things. Providence continued to improve throughout the year under a new coach last year after an 0-3 start. They too have a very new schedule so will that provide some continued momentum for the program? Best of luck to all programs and here is to hoping we can have a normal year with fans in the stands!

Good ol' Coach Wagner. I am pretty sure he went back to the state police force and left teaching. That was a few years back. I can't be for certain. He did a nice job as OC while there. -

We know Male is a tough out, but Dupont Manual will be as well. They only played 5 games this last year and were 3-2, but they were 9-3 the year before. Like Male, they are a premier magnet school in JCPS. We also know that New Albany returns a lot off of a very competitive team. Really?? He was completely out of education this last year after the Paoli situation. Good for him. He is a great coach. He definitely has a tall task ahead there. -
Lowery leaves La Porte
boilerfan87 replied to Tommy's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I'm not sure where Lowery is from originally, but prior to being the HC at LaPorte, he was HC at Paoli and was an assistant there for years before that. West Washington is about 25 minutes from Paoli, so it is a homecoming of sorts for him. Congrats to Coach Lowery. -
Enrollment figures
boilerfan87 replied to TheStatGuy's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I haven't read through this whole thread, but part of the thing that will skew enrollment numbers for some schools are the availability of online schools that are not affiliated with their districts. One example is K12, an online school provider. If students attend this school, they are not enrolled in their home school district. K12 must consult with the home school district in regards to special education accommodations, but those students are K12 students. Our district has lost a fair number of other students to other online schools, or even to home school. When they enroll in those schools, they are unenrolled in our district. I would imagine many districts have encountered this and will see an enrollment decrease as a result. -

Week 3, yes. It will be an interesting gauge for both programs coming off of good years and both with large losses in their senior classes. -

Hoosier Hills Conference

Yes, and a very good one. The population there continues to increase and the community very much supports the program. Playing against Floyd and Jeff make good sense. It is a step up in competition for them, plus they are very close games to travel for. If they lose, they will be better for it when the face their conference, plus they play bigger schools in the tournament. This is not the beginning of a move to the HHC for SC. They would still be the smallest program in the conference if they made the move, so it would do them no good. This is a nice, happy medium where they get to play a couple of HHC opponents to better themselves in the long run. -

Silver Creek dropped Providence week 3 to pick up Floyd. That will be a neat matchup. SC will be in a bit of a rebuild mode next year as they had a large senior class, but the program is still in good shape. FC will be rebuilding as well so on paper it should be an interesting game. -

That would be one heck of a drive if true. It is nearly 3 hours, according to Google maps, so probably at least 3 on a bus! It is no longer directly HHC related, but Madison's schedule is interesting. I'd have to think the double up on September 10th is an error and one of those games is a week 3. Carroll County definitely makes sense, as they are nearly across the river from one another. Mercer County is a solid 3A school. And Boone County is a 5A program that has struggled for some time now. They keep JC, BNL and Seymour from their HHC days. DATE OPPONENT EASTERN TIME OA 0.0, DA 0.0 Aug. 21 Mercer County (Ky.) 5:00 pm Aug. 27 at South Dearborn 4A 7:00 pm Sep. 10 Carroll County (Ky.) 7:00 pm Sep. 10 Milan 1A 7:00 pm Sep. 17 at Jennings County 4A 7:00 pm Sep. 24 at Mitchell 2A 7:00 pm Oct. 1 Boone County (Ky.) 7:00 pm Oct. 8 at Bedford North Lawrence 5A 7:00 pm Oct. 15 Seymour 5A 7:00 pm -
That's a good looking schedule. Nice to see them keep playing the big boys to make them better. I'm excited to see Allen continue to develop. Will Heritage Hills bounce back and compete with GS in the big school division? Will Boonville be a factor? Does Mount Vernon and North Posey continue their improvement and compete for division titles? What does Southridge return? They've been on a roll lately. Can Tell City and Forest Park build on very good years?

Ohio is the Laboratory for the All In Format
boilerfan87 replied to Bobref's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
To me, it's a numbers thing. They already have a small number of teams in the tournament. I suppose we could combine 5A/6A again, but we know we went to 6 classes because of the discrepancy between the highest enrollment and the lowest of 5A. -
Playoff Format: Start from Scratch
boilerfan87 replied to Bobref's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I have discussed this for many years after seeing it work in Kentucky, although they aren't without their flaws. 1. Abolish conferences. 2. Utilize "sectionals" as districts. 3. Play 10 game regular season schedule, with 7 of those games being opponents from your district. This gives coaches/ADs 3 games to schedule at their leisure. If they're building a program, they can schedule easier. If they want stiff competition, they can schedule up a class or two. The open weeks will be weeks 1-3, so everyone has the same open dates. 5A and 6A will remain as 4 team districts and will only have 3 required games and 7 open to schedule how they please. 4. Top 6 of 8 teams in 1A-4A qualify for the tournament. This is based on district standings (win/loss column). 5. First week of the playoff the 1 and 2 seed from 1A-4A have a bye. The other games are seeded based on district standings. 6. Playoff matchups are not inter-district. We'll match closest districts for close as possible play. Higher seeds get the home games. I will use sectional 48 and 47 as examples. It gets a little funky since teams played different numbers of games due to COVID. SECTIONAL 48 Sect Class Overall West Washington 6- 0 7- 1 11- 1 Perry Central 5- 2 5- 2 8- 4 North Daviess 3- 2 3- 3 4- 5 North Central (Farmersburg) 1- 2 1- 5 1- 7 Tecumseh 1- 3 1- 3 3- 5 Springs Valley 1- 4 1- 5 1- 8 Eastern Greene 1- 4 1- 5 1- 9 Rock Creek Academy 0- 1 0- 3 0- 6 SECTIONAL 47 Sect Class Overall North Decatur 5- 1 8- 2 10- 3 Milan 4- 1 5- 1 7- 4 Tri 3- 1 5- 2 8- 3 Knightstown 3- 2 4- 2 6- 4 South Decatur 2- 2 4- 2 5- 2 Cambridge City Lincoln 1- 3 1- 4 1- 6 Oldenburg Academy 0- 4 2- 6 3- 6 Hagerstown 0- 4 0- 5 0-10 In this scenario in Sectional 47, Oldenburg Academy and Hagerstown would not have qualified for the playoffs (again it's not a true representation this year since number of games is off). In sectional 48, Springs Valley (lost to Eastern Green) and Rock Creek would have been eliminated. West Washington, Perry Central, North Decatur and Milan would have earned the byes. First round matchups would be: 48 #3 North Daviess vs. 47 #6 Cambridge City Lincoln 47 #3 Tri vs. 47 # 6 Springs Valley 48 #4 North Central vs. 47 #5 South Decatur 47 #4 Knightstown vs. 47 #5 Tecumseh The winner of the 47/48 region would face the winner of the 45/46 region, etc. As a whole in this scenario, 64 of 320 teams playing do not qualify for the playoffs. Therefore, 80% of eligible teams still participate in the playoffs. Each 7. These districts can be redrawn every 2-3 years to adjust based on changing enrollments. I really think a scenario like this will increase competition, reduce the number of blowouts and lead to a better overall product. -

I just looked at sectional standings on Harrell. I am now guessing it probably included post-season play as well. But if you look at those sectionals individually, both of those teams would have fared well against that competition anyway. WeBo's top competition would have been South Vermillion and Seeger, of which they blasted Seeger in the tournament. Luers would have faced competition in Eastside (whom they beat in the tournament), Bluffton and Fairfield. -

Not, Texas, unfortunately. I almost made the jump - I had an offer near El Paso, I believe - but family kept me closer in Kentucky. That's my experience with it. You and I have discussed this before. If 6 of 8 out of your "district" make it, that is far different than the old cluster system. I personally have no issue with with all 8 of the district teams making the tournament as a starting point for seeding purposes. Plus, in this proposal, everyone in 5A/6A would make it since they already have 4 team "districts." In my proposal, all those guys make it. WeBo was already undefeated vs. sectional 37 opponents in the regular season. Luers was as well against sectional 35 opponents. Zionsville is 5A so all 5A teams would make it in this proposal. It would be all about district standings and I say top 4 or 6 out of 8 would make it. If you do 4, you maintain your simple playoff structure. If you did 6, the top 2 teams would have a bye on week 1 of playoffs.
