Simulate a Sectional
foxbat replied to hhpatriot04's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I think they did have an injury to their QB, but they were struggling before that too. Early on, they were having an issue with the passing game. This year the average QB rating is around 60 and last year it was almost twice that around 118. LCC's recent bread and butter has been around a solid running attack with a near lights out passing attack. Without that passing attack to keep teams off balance, it makes it easier to defend the run. -

They often lose a lot to graduation and tend to be young in general with no freshman team and a JV that dresses with the varsity. Not really sure what's going on with them this year. Even the year after O'Shea left, back in 2017, they finished 4-8 and made it to the sectional championship before losing to eventual state champ, Pioneer. I think they'll need a lot of help from the ping pong balls just to get to the third game of sectionals this season. -

I like it. Did this and helped confirm what I suspected ... at least on paper. I had LCC as, at least, the 4th best team in Sectional 34. The predictor had them as 5th, but close to 4th. I like the tool. Has a lot of data points to it just beyond predicting a winner. Nice work on this! -
Is New Pal a Lock in 5A?
foxbat replied to temptation's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
To be fair, Harrison put two TDs on Jeff before Jeff got out of the gate, then turned around and squeaked a mere 21 points on McCutcheon including one of those scores on a busted play and another where a haphazard McCutcheon D was out of position on a sweep play. Credit for the third score on a trick play. On paper Jeff looks a lot better than they do in person. Also, in using Harrison as a high-end measuring stick, this isn't the year for that. Realize that they beat West Lafayette by one TD. West Lafayette is 2-5 and only beat LCC this year by a TD. WL hasn't been 2-5 since 2004 when Harrison and McCutcheon were 4A and Benton Central and Tipton were 3A. Incidentally, LCC's 1-6 this season having just dropped it's sixth game to Tipton 49-7 ... that's not a misprint. Will have one more piece in the puzzle as Roncalli comes to Harrison this week. I'd take HSE and Avon by 3 using paper for them and in-person for Jeff. -
Those districts are all very different too. West Lafayette looks much more like LCC than any of the other schools. McCutcheon and Jeff are more aligned economically albeit not nearly demographically. Even WITHIN districts, Harrison probably looks more like West Lafayette than McCutcheon, even though Harrison and McCutcheon are both county schools that are close to the same size.

Looks like the score was 77-7 at the half and 84-7 within the first couple of minutes of the second half.

Has St. Joe's semi-restart had any impact in keeping that number from dropping further?

Takeaway from Week 6 ... Even though there's less than half a regular season to go, I suspect it will seem longer than that for LCC. Three regular season games left and the bright spot is that they get Benton Central for one of those. Common foe Twin Lakes beat both teams, but while Benton Central gave up more points, they scored more than the 3 that LCC put up. For the second time since LCC rejoined the Hoosier Conference, they'll be looking for a win against BC to end up not being the last-placed team in their division. They round things out with Tipton who beat RCHS 33-14 a couple of weeks ago. LCC lost to RCHS last week 40-7. Last regular season game is at Guerin. Potential silver lining for LCC, although it will be painful to attain it, is that they are probably, at best, ranked 4th in a field of 8 for Sectional 34. If they don't get out of Sectional 34 with a win, their two-year SF total will only be 1 point and they will head back down to 1A in 2026.

The question is whether Harrison and McCutcheon hold a grudge and work to keep them out. After all, Jeff voted with the rest of the NCC to kick Harrison out of the league citing, laughably, drive times and competitive landscape. Realize that 1) Jeff is using the rest of the NCC right now as a pre-post-season snack and 2) if the drive to Harrison/McCutcheon is too long, I doubt a team will feel "refreshed" ONLY having to drive to Jeff instead. Harrison had TH on its non-conference schedule for a while, so it's not like they haven't done it before. Not all that fun, but then again, it's not any worse than traveling all the way over to Anderson and Richmond.
-
Likely not. Even as Harrison was coming out of the doldrums there, it was still obvious that the NCC wasn't really a football conference. When Jeff and Harrison were the strongest two teams in the conference ... the last half decade or so ... it still wasn't really a magnet for other 5A/6A schools to join from a football perspective. The NCC will likely end up being a good destination for basketball schools, but with the mix of teams they have, they'll need to find someone with a good basketball program and a good football program that's like in the middle of all the other schools to make it worthwhile for them to jump to the NCC. That or a few stronger 2A football teams with OK basketball looking to add a little size to their schedules ... again with decent travel times.

And one of those will be against the other school in the district.

Actually, BD is around 69%, counting 9th grade too. Warren Central is 58.2%. https://www.in.gov/doe/files/school-enrollment-ethnicity-and-free-reduced-price-meal-status-2006-25-final.xlsx -

Warren Central's FRL is a bit over 58%. Carmel's is much lower at between 13-14%. Heck, that's better than Chatard's percentage. Ben Davis is over 73%. Realistically, 90% FRL doesn't exist for many high school football programs in Indiana. 496 922 53.8% Frankfort's reported FRL is 496 students and 922 is total reported student enrollment. The 53.8% is the result of FRL divided by total enrollment. I think a more realistic discussion is not whether Wright could create a championship program at a 90% FRL, but rather could he do so at somewhere like 3A Speedway which has around a 56% FRL number? Similarly, an interesting discussion would be what mid-/high- FRL 1A, 2A, 3A programs would/could a coach like Wright be able to make a positive impact on, if any, and why if so? -

Speaking of such, interesting that six of the top 10 pound-for-pounds are outside of +/- standard deviation for FRL. Of note, with a couple of p/ps mentioned in this thread for comparison: Andrean/Chatard as a datapoints, here's a bit of comparison: Andrean FRL 25.3% (https://indianagps.doe.in.gov/Summary/school/2403)/Chatard FRL 19.3% (https://indianagps.doe.in.gov/Summary/School/2351) From the original pound-for-pound list - FRL % 1. New Palestine 24.8% 2. Adams Central 24.5% 3. Decatur Central 56.2% 4. Lafayette Jefferson 58% 5. East Central 18.9% 6. Heritage Hills 28.7% 7. East Noble 32.5% 8. Gibson Southern 23.7% 9. Westfield 18.9% 10. Merrillville 47.3% Indiana average by school across all public schools ... includes schools that provide meals for all of their students: 48.9% Indiana median across all public schools: 48.9% Indiana standard deviation across all public schools: 18.7% Indiana +/- 1 stddev range across all public schools: 30.2 - 67.6% +2 stddev or higher regarding FRL% impact (positive) numbers for public schools calculated using IDOE data from their site -

De-hater sanity incoming ... LCC number of regional wins, 1976 - 2007 ... 32 years, prior to Kevin O'Shea: 2 ... 6.25% LCC number of regional wins, 2007-2016 ... 10 years, with Kevin O'Shea: 6 ... 60% Sometimes the right mix of coach and kids just happens to come together at the same time. -

I would say yes for Faith as they had a really good/cheap deal using Jeff's stadium, which is very nice especially for a 1A school for 8-on-8, yet they decided to finance and build their own field/stadium and move to 11-man ball. That move to 11-man was after taking an 80-2 beating at the hands of Indiana Deaf in the previous season of 8-on-8. Incidentally, I just listed two that didn't match the statement being tossed out that were on the extremes, but there are plenty others that I'm pretty sure make football a priority, or at least play it competitively, Of course it's necessary. If it's always a necessity to exclude p/p with general talking terms that don't apply to all, then it's probably a good idea to be qualified. See below for examples of p/p teams that wouldn't be in a discussion of pound-for-pound; especially if you just labelled the teams Team A and Team B and didn't know whether there was tuition or not. Scecina's a 2A school by enrollment too, although they were SF'd for a season or two. They too have not put together enough points in the twelve years that they've been in 2A despite having 2A enrollment. Heritage Christian is another. Won a title in 2008 in 2A, have 2A enrollment, and haven't cobbled together enough points to be pushed up in the last decade and a half. Ritter's another one that doesn't fit pound-for-pound for the last decade either. Couldn't do it in 3A with enrollment and even when moving back down to 2A by enrollment. Culver Academy in 3A and 4A by enrollment is another. With that said, I'm not sure any of these teams would be in a pound-for-pound discussion for the last decade; however, they are to be excluded before the consideration even starts. Very true. Oh dear God, I'm agreeing with Muda! -

Would agree mostly, although I would say that Jeff has almost always had the POTENTIAL to go further, but typically hasn't. In watching them at the Jeff-Harrison game, they have a bigger line than they've had in the past and they have a couple of really good players in Vanostran, on offense, and Aytch, on defense. They also have a shorter scat back ... he's actually a running back, but moves like a scat back ... I think it might be Adkins or maybe Fernandez. Man that kid can fly when they get him on the outside. I think part of what's getting the attention is that they are now down in 5A vs. 6A. For me, seeing them every year, the main thing I see that's different about them is the line size. I mean, if we go back to the Maximums Grimes years, there was lots of talent on those teams that should have gone far, but realistically Jeff, like just about most of the bottom 16 in 6A was destined to bow out early. Again, I think a really big part of why there's the perception of something different is decently attributable to their odds in 5A vs. their odds in 6A when they were there. Again, they have talent this year and the line size seems bigger, but having followed Jeff for a quarter century, I think the teams of the last decade, since Moore turned things around and Shanley has kept them turned around, have all had the potential. Perhaps this year's team may have a little different feel to them, again, I think it's the line that's the factor, but I'm not sure I think it's a big enough item to take them into a pound-for-pound top 5 ranking.
