  1. I can think of only twice in all the Ben Davis games that I've covered that the mercy rule would have been a problem for a team coming back from a deficit. In 2000, Ben Davis led Warren 35-0 before Warren scored 30 straight points. BD scored 30 straight to win, 65-30. Also, I believe BD got a big lead on Avon one time to have the Orioles come back before BD pulled away and won in MAYBE the 2011 Sectional. Other than that, I really can't think of another time in all the blowouts I've seen (whether benefiting BD or otherwise) that a mercy rule would have hampered a comeback. I love the new rule. It will speed up non-competitive games and perhaps even prevent injuries.
  2. BD 31, Avon 28 St. X 35, Brownsburg 21 Fishers 24, Pike 7 Franklin Central 34, Roncalli 30 HSE 21, NC 14 LC 35, LJ 31 Trinity 28, Warren 14 LN 35, Marion 21 CG 28, New Pal 21 Carmel 42, Noblesville 7 Southport 42, Perry 7 Decatur 34, Westfield 27 Zionsville 28, Lebanon 14
  3. Isn't part of the reason that the charter school was opened because they wanted to keep the identity of the school and community alive? I'd say that might factor into any "contraction" talk. For those new to the forum, Driven T does this stuff. He'll come on, post something controversial, and then skedattle. He's good at it. It's what he does.
  4. Of all the results, I think this one might have shocked me the most. Either Fishers is better or NC laid an egg last night.
  5. It was an awful bad very horrible night for the MIC. Great night for the HCC. Maybe the best night in conference football history, overall.
  6. Ben Franklin and the alleged lightning strikes the key on the kite string is the genesis of this nickname. Martinsville Artesians
  7. Depends on when the travel is happening. I know BD has traveled before out of state, but I can't imagine traveling across the country. Given the 300 mile rule, it's not an issue in Indiana, and I kind of side with the IHSAA on it.
  8. Not exactly true. BD's non-conference opponents are both ranked in the top 10 in 6A. While Carmel and Warren play national powerhouse Trinity in one non-conference game, they both have teams that don't rank in the top 10 as their other non-conference opponent. Center Grove plays Cathedral and New Pal (both tough teams but not in 6A), LC has HSE and Lafayette Jeff, LN has Perry Meridian and Marion, Pike has Zionsville and Fishers. North Central takes on Fishers and HSE. They're all tough...but BD has the most 6A ranked opponents.
  9. I guess I'm just getting old and forgot that this was going on here in Indiana. Just ignore me. I'm losing it.
  10. There is already a thread on this somewhere.
  11. How do you think the new play clock rules are going to work this year? Which teams will benefit?
  12. Based on the preseason Coaches Poll, Ben Davis will play... #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #7, #13, #15 and Pike. That's a schedule.
  13. I'll take Center Grove in this one in a low-scoring slobberknocker.
  14. I love this conference. It's always interesting. Quality coaching and quality play.
  15. BD's a great place. The challenges are different, and the rewards are great.
  16. I don't want people to read anything into what I am writing. There is no subtext to Mike. He says exactly what he means. He's no nonsense, honest and direct. He left because he thought it was time to do something else. He wanted a bit of a different pace. He wasn't looking when Mt. Vernon found him. As Kyle Neddenriep wrote: "But Kirschner said himself that this move was more about needing a change of pace than it was about moving up the coaching ladder. Coaching at Ben Davis is time-consuming job. There are more than 200 kids in the program and it is a year-round commitment. Kirschner, at age 56, was not ready to give up coaching, but was ready to see it from a different angle." Mike worked incredibly hard. It was a 24 hour job for him year around, and his family is a football family. Mama Kirsch is all in. I will always love and respect Coach Kirschner for the man he is and the job he did getting the Giants back to Championship level football. I have nothing to say bad about him, ever. Coach Simmons is not wholly unfamiliar to BD. He was an assistant under Tom and Mike and was an Assistant AD before he left to go to Noblesville. He knows the rigors of the job.
  17. It's my opinion. Others may have different opinions. I believe Temptation's prediction is not that far off of mine, given the competiton. With Brownsburg and Avon up first, we'll see what the picture looks like. You win both of those, then we're looking at a team that's probably pretty good. As far as Kirschner's departure goes, he was burnt out at BD and ready for another challenge. I know that's hard for people to accept, but that's what happened. I have a lot of respect for Jason. He took his lumps last year, and he's now had a full offseason to coach 'em up. People won't reboot their expectations, so it's going to be important to show progress from year one to two. I don't think he'd disagree with that.
  18. Glad that Coach Simmons has had a full offseason under his belt. The Giants seem focused in for 2019. I think we'll know pretty fast how they're going to be with Brownsburg and Avon in the first two weeks. I think the Giants need to win one of those first two games or at least be very competitive in both. 13 returning starters is great plus lots of experience. Critical year for the BD program, IMO. BD has to re-establish itself in the upper tier of the MIC, and that won't be easy with NC moving up into that level last year and LC and LN bidding for that this year.
