Has Indiana Become a Football State?
BDGiant93 replied to JeffO2's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I don't know if football has taken over the top spot from basketball, but Indiana has become MORE of a football state...especially since the Colts have been good. -
I definitely remember seeing that game in the BD/Warren series highlights. That was Coach D's first year at BD. Interestingly, 1984 is the only year Warren and BD did not play in the regular season since 1937.
-
Yes he did.

When Coach D retired, I sat down with him to do a 30 minute interview. After 57 minutes, he had to go. He talked about his career in coaching, and he talked about what brought him to BD. He wanted to get back into high school coaching, and he'd been back from West Point only a few days with Dr. James Mifflin, the principal at BD, contacted him about their coaching opening. Coach D remembered playing BD in 1977 in the Sectional and how they drubbed him. He said he knew that BD was a sleeping Giant. He came, chatted, and secured the job. First two years, he went 8-11. It went much better after that.

Coach D is the best storyteller.

I would never ever discount Kevin. There's a reason why he's a Hall of Famer. He changed the way schools think about weight training. Coach Vanderbush came in with Coach D.

🤣 Laughable. But ok.

Ok, we get it. You think Dick Dullaghan was a product of where he coached. I'm sure that's why he earned those college coaching jobs with Jim Young at Purdue and at Army. Ben Davis' best year prior to his arrival was an 11-1 run to the Final Four in 1977 and a 7-0-1 campaign in 1950. From 1937-1983, BD had 11 winning seasons...total. The Giants, as a program, didn't go over .500 until 1997. But, yes...it was all enrollment. Anyway, my original point as to why Carmel made the playoffs was not just because they were a wealthy suburb but because they had a great football coach has been made.

My uncle was a farmer and graduated from Noblesville in the 50's. It was also a farm school back then.
-
My aunt and uncle owned a farm on 146th Street just east of Gray Road. It's now where the Kingsley housing development is and the Grace Church is the other half. Anyway, we used to go up there and see them and there was nothing but farmland for miles. Now, south of 146th St. is Carmel. North is Noblesville. West of Gray Road is Westfield. It's really remarkable how that area has become so different in 50 years.
-
You might not be aware of this, but Carmel was a different place in 1973.
-
Dullaghan took over a Carmel program in 1973 that had went 7-13 the previous two years and had them in the State Championship Game in 1975. Took over BD in 1984 and had them in the Championship in 1987.

Mt Vernon (Fortville) hires Lidy

Makes sense to promote from within. I'm sure Coach Lidy will do a fantastic job at keeping the momentum rolling for the Marauders.- 1 reply

Might have also been Dick Dullaghan was coaching there at that time.

What a great hire for Crown Point. Congratulations to Coach Buzea and the Bulldogs.

MIC/HCC/Conference Indiana realignment
BDGiant93 replied to Indiana Fan's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
DT and I go way back on this site. I would hope by now that my digs at him are taken by him for what they are worth. He digs back at me too. We've been doing this for...gosh...years. Back when he was Driven T before he was DT. I respect him for the stirring spoon he brings to the board. He knows how to get discussion going. When I agree with him, I say so. When I don't I say so. As far as the Kirschner deal at Warren, it came completely as a surprise to me. I haven't talked to Mike since he left BD at great length. It sounds like from his publicly available statements that his zeal for leading a major program came back at some point while at Mount Vernon and he saw an opportunity to lead his alma mater. It's a no brainer for WC if he wanted the job. Similarly, I'd be shocked if Lawrence Central (or any of the current MIC teams) left the MIC. The original six of the MIC seem committed to continuing it, and Pike and LC joined up within the last 10 years. I just don't see LC leaving for any of the surrounding conferences when the MIC is the MIC. I think it would be foolish for any of the current teams to leave the MIC for another conference. I'll firmly state all of this is my opinion. Reasonably informed, but it's my opinion. I could be completely wrong, but I'd say that the MIC losing LC would be highly unlikely. If I am wrong, I'm very happy to be called out, roasted, served crow straight up with feathers, etc. I always have been since I started on the OLD GID back in the day. -

MIC/HCC/Conference Indiana realignment
BDGiant93 replied to Indiana Fan's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Why does that matter? Franklin Central isn't in the top half of the HCC and you have them jumping to the MIC. I'm saying that LC left Conference Indiana and joined the MIC. The MIC is centrally located for travel and scheduling. The longest trip for them is probably BD or Center Grove. I have heard zero rumblings from anyone at LC that they are thinking of ditching the MIC. LN isn't leaving, and they're in the same district. This isn't a Perry/Southport situation. -

Calling all High School Historians

BD has been purple and white for as long as I can remember. There's even a letter sweater from the 1920's that has a purple BD in our gym display case.
