As always it is about the line of scrimmage. With the exception of 2019, Heritage Hills has matched Chatard's line play since the 2001 game. 2002 was a turning point in the HH strength program...

Now, let's see if Heritage Hills has the Jimmies and Joes to contain the Trojans. I'm confident the coaching staff will have a scheme in place to possibly make some plays. Let's get it on!

Chatard beats you by not making mistakes and then exploiting your mistakes. Hoping for a clean game.

The Chatard/HH rivalry always struck me as similar to the battles we had with MD throughout the years. Only difference was our Parochial giant was in Sectional- yours semi-state (most years)

As someone who tracks all fifty states in this sport, I have the unique opportunity to see how others conduct their tournaments.    Some have some great ideas (Ohio plays on Saturdays at neutral sites), others have some strange ideas (several states in New England still conduct an arch-rival game on Thanksgiving weekend after their tournaments are over.)    Arizona has a recently added feature that I have come to favor.    Similar to Indiana, they have six classes in football.    At the end of each season, a committee selects the eight best teams in the state to play in an "Open" tournament.    Everyone else still plays in their respective classes.    One of the things I like about it is that if a school has an outstanding season, they are allowed to test themselves against the best teams in the state.    Then the following year, if the school loses a lot of talent, they simply drop back into their previous class.   This idea hit me when I thought about a Chatard-East Central matchup.    I realize that some will say that this dilutes the final game in each class by taking away the best team in that class.    So instead of watching Chatard winning a 3A title again, which is almost a foregone conclusion, we could watch a Knox-Heritage Hills final game this weekend.   Surely a Northwood-New Palestine final would be a better game than East Central-Northwood.   Maybe its me, but there a lot of things we could do to improve our tournament.

Dumbest.Idea.Ever. I can't believe a State actually does that. I mean, it makes sense for the biggest schools ...what you are describing is essentially their State tournament anyway.

But let's say you are a once-in-a-lifetime class and you have a chance to win your 4A title - but then the State elects you to play up against Center Grove. That is suppose to be rewarding?!?

Some history between these 2, some one score heartbreakers with just one win by HH and before this digresses into another "this football game carries the stench of Rome" thread, lets look at the history:

Heritage Hills 13-1 VS. Indianapolis Chatard 14-0

This is the 9th meeting between Heritage Hills and Chatard and the Trojans lead the series 7-1.

The first meeting between these 2 schools was in the 1997 Regional, The next 6 meetings were in the
South Semi State and this will be the 2nd meeting in the state finals.

Heritage Hills lone victory in the series came in 2004, The Trojans came into that game as a heavy favorite
and were the 3 time defending 3A state champs winning the title the previous 3 seasons. In that game Chatard
led 10-0 after the first quarter, Heritage Hills added a Jace Morrison field goal in the 2nd quarter and trailed
10-3 at halftime. The Patriots had a long clock killing drive in the 3rd quarter and tied it up with 2:29
remaining in the 3rd on a Bryce Pund 2-yard touchdown run. Neither team was able to muster much offense in
the 4th quarter before Jace Morrison kicked a 38-yard field goal with 8.3 sceonds left to seal the victory.

    Series
    1997 Indianapolis Chatard 24 Heritage Hills 21
    2001 Indianapolis Chatard 34 Heritage Hills 14
    2002 Indianapolis Chatard 35 Heritage Hills 28
    2003 Indy Chatard 24 Heritage Hills 3
    2004 Heritage Hills 13 Indianapolis Chatard 10
2005 Indianapolis Chatard 21 Heritage Hills 20 Overtime
    2007 Indianapolis Chatard 28 Heritage Hills 17
    2019 Indianapolis Chatard 34 Heritage Hills 3

That was a travesty…one of- if not THE best HH team in a storied history- and turn the ball over 5 times and still almost beat a good Chatard team. Such a shame…that 02 team was State Champ good

The Patriots did a better job taking away what we do well than we did to them.  Well deserved Win!  Good luck next week!

    Care to elaborate on that??

From my perspective- the Pats totally and utterly dominated the first half in terms of field position (opening kickoff of the game certainly didn’t help matters) and made the big-time “splash” plays needed in order to win a game of this magnitude.

Speaking of which- Southern Indiana certainly showed out last night- what a crowd!!

Great season Titans and good luck next week Patriots

I would be interested in knowing what had you in the hallowed halls of 1500 Lincoln Ave so as to be able to make a comparison between Memorial and Southridge? Our students wear uniforms (including ties for boys), so the populations will look much different. But aside from that, I will agree with you 100% that the expectations for success in all aspects of the high school experience at a p/p school are very high, and there is likely a significant amount of students in most public schools whose parents do not have that same expectation.

I have great respect for Titan32, but his "effective enrollment" theory is flawed.

I don’t quarrel much with folks when they point out that there is ON THE WHOLE a different kid roaming the halls (with different parents as importantly) on P/Ps v. Publics that often have many who are there solely because they are directed to be but I will leave you all with a question.

If the difference is solely the type of kid (more driven/motivated, more athletic…either or both) then why aren’t the halls of Chatard (since this conversation is, momentarily, focused on Chatard) simply replete with Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, etc. State Championship hardware?  It has been, rightfully, noted here that a certain 3A team generally looks forward to wrestling matches v. Chatard.  Other teams look forward generally to hoops games, etc. v. Chatard.  Chatard Boys generally do ONE sport remarkably well….but are absolutely normal at best in most everything else.

As regards football….something else or in addition must be at play.

PS - I wrote this before reading @tango’s post which I think is very insightful.  “Thank you” (still out of emojis).

Well - to answer @tango question as far as the difference - what I DID NOT see was a school with a large student population filled with free/reduced lunch #'s, students with IEP's, or a large EL population.

Not saying a school can't be successful with those numbers, but just pointing out the differences and the challenges those can bring.

And look - I'm not bashing P/P education or even their success. Good for them - but I just can't fathom how one can IGNORE those obvious factors and just point to "CYO" and a hard work ethic as reasons for success.

Then what do you think it is? Just writing a check like some others?

What is the secret sauce that the P/P's have over similar public counterparts?? You really don't know the answer? LOL...I can tell you it is NOT that you all have figured out you need to have a Youth program - that is happening in every good football program in the State.

The answer is very plain and simple - the socioeconomic build-up of your student population. I have walked the halls of Memorial and I have walked the halls of SR - I can tell you they are NOT the same - not even CLOSE. Even though our enrollments might be close in #- I can tell you we are not pulling from the same population.

And that right there folks is the biggest difference between your publics and P/P's. I believe Titan32 has coined the term "effective enrollment"

It is NOT because you all figured out how to have a YOUTH program lol.....the arrogance

If your argument is "the school's haven't given us the opportunity" you lose the debate before it starts.  CYO is just an organization....like any community.   It's involved parents that make the difference and it takes years.   You're crying "poor me" because whatever community you're from hasn't done the same.   CYO doesn't provide anything except scheduling and organization.  It's not a government problem at all.  Yoi don't need government to have an involved community or  youth sports program.   Like I said...just a convenient excuse.  What Chatard has was built over 50 years.   It doesn't happen overnight and ultimately, you can be jealous and blame the government if you want to, but that's just a smoke screen.  Chatard has done it right for a long time.

What in the holy world?? Do you really believe what makes Chatard stand out above the others is their youth league?!?
Really?? You think that is the special sauce that they’ve figured out that others haven’t?!?

    Wow…

A seeded tournament might well have produced a similar result. By my count, GS has beaten 2 non-conference teams with winning records and HH has beaten 3.  I have no problem with both teams winning their way to the state semifinals.

And 3A south has been a study in shifting demographics. Sullivan, Crawford County, Brownstown Central have all dropped to 2A.  Owen Valley, South Dearborn, and Madison have all dropped from 4A to 3A.  Southridge now seems to be solidly 3A by enrollment after getting the SF bump.

Not if you go by the "effective enrollment" so eloquently coined by our friend 32! And technically...we are still up by SF standards from our sectional championships in 2020 & 2022

Back to the game at hand on Friday ...everyone relatively healthy?? Any big factors to note going into the game??

  9. Another week - and more championships represented by the "best small school conference in the STATE!"

I know things are cyclical in nature, but proud to have 3 PAC teams represented in the upcoming semi-states. A job well done by the Titans, Patriots, and Vikings.

Hopefully the IHSAA will continue to spread out these teams so we don't all devour each other in the same sectionals.

Best of luck on your preparations this week. The Jungle will be rocking on Friday.

I would agree that you couldn't really tell on the livestream. Batesville's head coach during his post-game comments mentioned it was a pick play with the receiver blocking the DB down field. The DB grabbed him to try to get through the pick to go cover his guy. Batesville's coach called it a mistake by the officials and should been an offensive pass interference.

Got it- thank you. I won’t disagree that that seemed to be a key moment in the game

In close games- everything is magnified-HH has definitely been on the correct side of some 50/50 calls this postseason…but hey- that’s the way it goes!

  11. Was watching a little bit of the Warren/CG game last night that was tight throughout- and it got me thinking…

What are some of the biggest “upsets” that have taken place in the IHSAA football tournament??

I know we rarely have the #1 ranked team win in all classes so technically you could say they happen every year- but I’m talking “super teams” everyone just assumed were going to walk thru the tourney??

I fancy myself a historian somewhat of high school football and really- I couldn’t come up with many. The Zachary teams that everyone thought would dominate did…Anthrops LCC teams did, Kisner Pioneer teams- same. Warren Central with Tardy…yup. Banks with Ben Davis, they won it. Heck even as far back as Grossman with BS.

    …..but Reitz (public)?

Without naming particular parties. The whole public/private thing is tiresome as regards the “recruiting” thing.

Public school recruiting of hoops players is legendary in Indiana.  People literally brag about it.

I think I was the first to reply to this thread and said the exact same thing. In the "recruiting" world - I actually understand that P/P HAVE to do that in some regards ...their schools literally would not exists if they didn't "sell" their schools. However, publics going after other athletes from other publics - to me - that is just flat wrong.

The player in question is one of my son’s best friends.  I encouraged him to report it.  He didn’t want to - which I understood.  And I certainly don’t think it’s my place to do so.

I was just surprised at how blatant it was - and the fact the coach felt comfortable doing it in writing, no less.

Coaches doing so would be Harbaugh-like stupid ...there are plenty of parents out there willing to do the dirty work. We're not allowed to talk about a certain State Championship and how "key pieces" just happened to fall into a certain programs lap conveniently/coincidentally.

Bottom line, until the IHSAA really wants to take a hardline stance (which they won't) - it will still go on. Get better or get used to it.
