  4. I will say this once again, the game is not considered over until the Referee holds the ball over his head or worst case the officials leave the field. The referee never did this and the officials never left the field. They deemed it illegal substitution or illegal participation instead of what it truly was, an unsportsmanlike conduct for a non player entering the field during the play. We had time to see the replay and hear about it from others. They had a five minute discussion and just happened to get it wrong. I can guarantee they won’t again and they will feel terrible about it for a long time to come. The fact that is is over a week old and we are still discussing it is crazy. Is Brebeuf playing next week? No. I understand this would be one more game at least and it would have been decided by the players. They more than likely would have been beat, just like Brebeuf. The state championship was not decided in this game.
  5. We had something similar almost happen to us a couple of year ago, but it was just the girl basketball locker room and it was homecoming. We were leaving to start the second half and all of a sudden about 30 girls walked into the locker room unannounced. Needless to say, we were a little late getting the second half started after having to track down the AD to get everyone out and get the doors locked. They luckily didn't come in a few minutes prior as they might have had to attend the same therapy.
  6. Unfortunately, I do 😞. We were in a location that you could not take a shower without being shocked nor be clean even after taking a shower. It is sad that the officials are not all that well taken care of. But that $85 and love of the game still keeps us coming back for more 🙂

  8. Loved the field, but the locker room facilities could definitely use an upgrade, especially for the officials.
  9. We gathered and talked about it after we had already through the flag. The field goal was blocked on the home sideline where all of the action took place after the recovery. The visiting team made it out no further than the 9 yd marker on the opposite side of the field. We ruled that since the visiting team did not have an influence on the play, that we had an UNS on the visiting teams bench, and with no time left, the game was over due to it being enforced as a dead ball foul. We were still very unsure we had it right, but we remembered I believe what happened in the Ben Davis game a few years ago and followed what we had learned from that. In the end, after many conversations, including a couple of PM's with you :D, we realized we had done the right thing. The only thing I felt we did wrong was I threw the flag as the White hat, but I could only see the visiting team due to me staring right at the kicker. It was very obvious that the opposing team had came on the field and then retreated as well. Regardless, it is still a judgement call that we have the benefit at looking at replay for. We were not the ones on the field for this and did not have the pressure of a win or go home game. I can guarantee these officials have doubted what they called from the get go, even if they had it 100% right. I have not met one official, no matter how good or bad they are, that would purposely screw over a high school football team.
  10. Had this exact game scenario in a regular season last year and we were fortunate to get it right. I would think it would get overturned since no one was participating. We will never know though.
  11. Not going to try because we both agree on this part! As always, conversations with you are top notch!
  12. I will just put out that I have seen several "state caliber" crews while watching games over the last several years from the Indianapolis area and their mechanics are absolutely terrible. I have also watched/worked "state caliber" white hats that did not know their signals or rules. Mine is not based off much else. Penalties will be missed, but knowing why you call something matters. Relaying the ball to each other without the ball hitting the ground matters. Hustle matters. Location matters. There is one crew in the Terre Haute area, in particular, that has done multiple state finals and they aren't even the best crew in their association. They are 3rd. White hat stood in the wrong location for almost the whole first half of one game I watched. The other crews are just that much better than them. I will say I have only seen crews from Indianapolis and south for the most part. With that being said, almost everyone I have seen from the Indianapolis area, It always seems to be an absolute s*** show. I apologize for saying I-70 &up in my previous post. Mainly just complaining about what I see from a lot of Indianapolis area crews that I hear are great. As far as the traveling part, I feel like less games are south so less crews move on. It's more sour grapes than anything else. IT is also a NIGHTMARE to get observed from the south due to the lack of observers in the area. It is not fair to ask you to travel to Tell City or Evansville multiple times a year, but I know you would. We went to Zionsville a few years ago and BAM we got observed. That same year we got observed during Sectional. Both times we had great reviews but still couldn't get past a first round game for the following years. We also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Faulkens during the season. People give him a hard time, but I really enjoyed all interactions I had with him. I will say, I left officiating mainly to spend more time with my family. I still watch the game as more of an official than a fan. My wife hates me for it. I miss being on the field. I miss the comradery. I do not miss tourney time due to feeling let down that we didn't advance and seeing crews at later levels in the tourney that I know for a fact other crews I had seen on my off weeks or worked with/saw film of are sitting at home.
  13. I will die on this hill. The best officiating does not come from I-70 and up. Yet you see a lot more of those crew advancing in the playoffs due to "travel". One of several reasons last year was my last year officiating.
  14. Round 2 Match-Ups: Paoli (+17) at Brownstown Milan (-21) at West Washington North Daviess (-3) at Perry Central Martinsville (-31) at Silver Creek Madison (+1) at Scottsburg Indian Creek (+1) at North Harrison Salem (+7) at Tell City Bonus Game of the Week: South Vermillion (+3) at Linton
  15. If it is as described, I wouldn’t say a screw job as much as a lack of knowledge in that rule. If it did not affect the play, you call 15 yd UNS and that is enforced as a dead ball foul. So no replay of the down. If they considered it as affecting the play, you have illegal participation and you do replay the down.
  16. 1. Columbia City @ FW Dwenger 2. Culver Academy @ Lebanon 3. Danville @ Brebeuf Jesuit 4. Woodlan @ Tippecanoe Valley 5. Heritage @ Delta 6. Rushville @ Franklin County 7. 17. I have done this before and was paid what I would expect of a JV and Freshman game. Most school will pay you what you would make for both games since there is a chance an official only does one game
  18. Round 1 Match-Ups: Mitchell (+14) at Brown County Eastern Pekin (-38) at Paoli Tell City (-42) at Crawford County West Washington (+4) at South Decatur Perry Central (-4) at Tecumseh Providence (-3) at Springs Valley Silver Creek (+1) at Connersville Charlestown (+52) at Martinsville Scottsburg (-31) at Owen Valley North Harrison (-7) at Corydon Brownstown (-35) at Switzerland County Clarksville (+28) at Salem Bonus Game of the Week: North Knox (+7) at North Daviess
  19. Had a QB start moving his shoulder on a hard count a few years ago, told him he needed to not do it again since he wasn’t doing it on every snap. Typically that was my go to when I had a conversation. Do it every play, you get more leeway. Do it once in a blue moon, you get a flag soon.
  20. Week 9 Match-Ups: Clarksville (-7) at Crawford County North Daviess (+21) at Springs Valley Paoli (-28) at North Knox Perry Central (-21) at Mitchell West Washington (+7) at Salem Eastern Pekin (+4) at Charlestown Providence (-10) at North Harrison Scottsburg (+17) at Brownstown Silver Creek (-3) at Corydon Bonus Game of the Week: Tell City (+1) at South Spencer

  22. “Generally” I try to help those out by throwing out the other scenarios for the clarification. Sorry if I came off as abrasive.
  23. This is true unless the offense commits a hold during a passing play that is intercepted and returned for a touchdown. The hold has to be declined to keep the touchdown since it happened before the change of possession, correct?
  24. Crawford County (+35) at Paoli Perry Central (+1) at West Washington Scottsburg (-42) at Mitchell Springs Valley (-32) at Tecumseh Madison (+18) at Brownstown Corydon Central (-11) at Charlestown North Harrison (+1) at Silver Creek Salem (+1) at Eastern Pekin Bonus Game of the Week: Lawrence North (+4) at Warren Central
  25. Yes, unless it is in overtime. Any change of possession is blown dead in an overtime period.
