Enforcement of penalties behind the line of scrimmage
miner_35 replied to gindie's question in Officiating Forum
Not always marked off at the spot. If the end of the run is prior to the spot of the penalty, it's marked off from the end of the run. we hear all the time on penalties behind the LOS "It's enforced from the LOS!" I smile as we walk off from the flag or the end of the run and signal the ready for play :). -
How Are Officials Selected For, And Advanced Through, The Tournament?

I should have paid more attention to this, nice catch. Possibly they are setting up for the future after all. Let's see if they continue this next year. -
How Are Officials Selected For, And Advanced Through, The Tournament?
miner_35 replied to Bobref's question in Officiating Forum
This echoes what I was trying to explain in my post. The IHSAA "wants" to advance new crews but if you look at the assignments, most crews have already had a sectional championship game or more under their belts. I understand that there are a lot of good crews out there in the state of Indiana, but I know that the IHSAA is going to continue to lose officials if they do not get a better criteria for advancement. Heck, why not go ahead and make it an individual vote based upon what each official works and then throw crews together like they do in basketball come tournament time( I do not believe this is the best method). I do not know what else can be done, but there is no point in getting observed and being told you should advance as far as you are capable, in tournament, if the observers rating does not have a greater impact on the score. -

I should have specified as both observers were excellent and pointed out things we need to work on. I meant as far as advancing in the tournament past the first round. If they are being sent to watch someone, you would assume a good report, let alone two in the same season, would help your crew out with tournament advancement. This means that the ones that know you are doing this rather well, have less input than the coaches do. -

I completely agree. My crew was evaluated twice last year. Once during season at a big 5A/6A conference game and during the first round of sectionals. Nothing came of it at all. Why not give more say to observers that actually know what the officials are suppose to be doing? I do not know how many times as the R on Friday's I get asked "How is that pass interference?" They don't like when I state "Coach, I do not know, it's not my call." It is very well established that many coaches do not know/understand the rules.I also know that coaches can be very biased. There is one coach in particular that is very well respected that has given my crew (prior to me becoming crew chief and even last year) a low rating due to something that happened 8 years ago. None of the crew from last year was even officiating this game. This has now hopefully changed since they have limited this vote to the last 3 years. In the end, I still believe that getting observed means something and in the future I hope it allows officials to advance for the right reason and not be held back because of one call or a dislike of someone on that crew. -
I have seen Forest Park a couple of times this year. They play hard but seemed to tire out in the two games I saw. They are not a bad team at all and I feel Coach Goebel is dead on about his assessment.
-
I can understand being upset, as would I, but please do not mention the name of someone on here. This is unacceptable for the crew to do as it does not follow the rules, and it does rob the kids of gaining experience. With that being said, was this something that was agreed on by the coaches due to injuries on one side and the tournament looming? I have no clue, but if not this was handled incorrectly. Just please dont mention individual names.

I know of a few instances where the lack of school votes has hurt a crew. If your crew is under a new crew chief under this current system, you have to rely on write-in votes since you do not have a 3 year history of games. This could be a big problem if you do not reach out yourself to previous AD's/coaches and inform them that a write in is required for the vote. I am sure this can/will be fixed in the future, but this is the biggest flaw I see in the new change. -
I will usually ask if they are taking a knee and will inform both the opposing players and coach. I also inform the opposing team that the ball can be recovered if a fumble takes place. I then move up and make sure nothing happens.

Believe it or not, I had a player and a coach ask me the following questions. 1. What kind of tee can we use for a free-kick following a fair catch? 2. If the ball is near that sideline on a kick off, can I step out of bounds, on purpose, and touch it? Would this make it a kickoff out of bounds? (Saw it on Sunday) I feel like I answered them rather well, but wanted to see what everyone else's thoughts were on these.

No, ball is dead before the kick in high school in that case.

You Be the Judge - (Receiver Steps Out)
miner_35 replied to Goose Liver's question in Officiating Forum
If he stepped out on his own, he technically commits illegal participation. That's 15 yards. Play has to be accepted to negate the touchdown, therefore the offense gets to run another play since we can not end on an accepted penalty. If they decline and the game is within 8 points before said touchdown, they have an opportunity to run the PAT. If it has no change on the outcome, such as a team taking the lead as time expires or trails by more than two after the touchdown, the PAT is not attempted. -

If anyone on my crew calls this... they will be replaced... immediately..
-
If the official calling this deems it to be blatant enough, there is technically a NFHS rule stating there can be another 15 yards tacked on. Have fun explaining that to the coach..
-
He could slide to the ground or take a knee or pass the ball backwards out of bounds. I agree that it could be called, especially at the end of each half, but I see no advantage gained in doing such a thing in this scenario.
-
Personally, I would not call it Intentional grounding due to the fact he could just as easily run out of bounds, but no one is around him. This just has to be interpreted the same for both sides throughout the entire game.
-
#1 Illegal Touching #2 Illegal Touching and Intentional Grounding: the drop conserves time and he was under pressure. #3 could be Intentional grounding, but he is not under pressure and not just trying to conserve time or yardage. Could be interpreted differently by different crews.

SWIAC Basketball 2020/2021
miner_35 replied to Greene County Coach's topic in Boy's High School Hoops
Not very often you see an official like that either, but it makes for a sad day when they are more talked about than the kids playing. No Lincoln hurt as he is a match up nightmare. I just wish he would play a little more defense with his athleticism and not force some of the shots when others are open. With that being said, he is very talented and it is easy for me to say as I just watch on the TV this year. The dynamic is different when being there in person the whole time. I just saw where the Miners hit 0 three point shots for this game. It has been awhile since that has happened. If they hit 4 of those shots, which is less than normal, we have a whole new ball game. A sectional rematch would be interesting, and I would expect a different outcome. -

This is coming from a licensed official. I believe I know which official you are talking about and I completely agree. Horrible for both sides but very inconsistent on the charge/block call. Linton seemed to get the majority of bad calls from the one, but he was bad for both sides while I was watching. Makes me sick at times but we all have a bad night. Linton also missed a lot of lay ups, as well. In the end, a good win for Eastern and a great learning tool for the Miners. -
I feel like the WR is starting to move forward with the snap. It looks worse than it is in full speed. It is one of those things where the wings should communicate "Hey, he looked like he was moving forward in his motion on that last one, but it wasn't something that I felt was enough to call. Can you watch it on your side too and let me know?" You may see that play ran several more times and you may not. I go by the rule of thumb of looking at the hips. if they look to be turned endzone to endzone with motion occuring, it probably warrants a penalty. if not, tread lightly my friends.

That's why I said it is a foul in high school, didnt know about college. Assumed it was similar to NFL. The QB really selling the hard count can be considered something used to draw the defense offside if that head bob is considered bad enough, depending on the officials. They even went over stuff like that from in the IFOA videos this past seasons. Once again, I see no harm here. Offense just needed to move or snap the ball, solves a that problem.
-
100%, regardless of a missed call at least at the high school level, pretty sure it is different in college. Also, QB could be called for false start with the head bob. Kind of at the discretion of the official.

I would not have called that a recovery, but maybe that is just me.
