Jasper 1-2 at Heritage Hills 3-0
SEAL_63 replied to DaveMosbey's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Defensive struggle? Or mistakes on both sides? -
Lincoln hasn’t been good in a lot of ways through the first 3 weeks. But tonight they just didn’t get off the bus. No doubt about it. 150+ yards in penalties and turnovers deep in the opponents territory were back breakers all night. After marching the ball 80-some yards on the first drive of the game they could not get in the end zone. After that the game just snow balled. By far the most disappointing game of the Salters era. But I know these coaches will not get down on the kids. A lot of season left to improve

Congratulations to NK. Gonna be interesting in a couple weeks in Bicknell.

Linton Miners @ North Vermillion Falcons

I would say that’s a pretty safe assumption....Can’t decide if you’re trying to paint me into a corner or not haha. I mean Linton, NV, SR all have undeniable football pedigrees. My point is that even the great coaches/programs will at some point face a rival they can’t solve, even though on paper they seem like an even match. -

If NV does in fact have a stellar passing attack, it will likely be the most interesting game of the series to date. Bottom line though, Brian Oliver evidently knows how to game plan for this team and it has shown the last 3 years. Miners 34, Falcons 13 -
Friday, Sep. 13 Jasper at Heritage Hills, 7 pm Mount Carmel (Ill.) at Princeton, 7 pm North Knox at Boonville, 6:30 pm Vincennes at Mount Vernon ©, 7 pm Washington at North Daviess, 6 pm Jasper/HH - one of the hardest games to pick every year. No idea. Had Jasper not exploded against Boonville last week, this might be easier. MC over Princeton Boonville over NK Lincoln over MV - Alices defense is for real. Offense still searching for answers, but I think they find enough of it this week. Washington over ND - The Hatchets are winless. Their smaller county rival is undefeated. Why not?

I’ve not been more interested in a matchup in quite sometime after Jasper’s performance last week...especially going into Week 5 at vincennes. Should be a battle. -

Should be an interesting matchup for the Titans. Much speed and athleticism compared to what they face on a weekly basis -
Just realized there aren’t any predictions on this thread.. Jasper at Boonville - The Pioneers are your back to back Big 8 champs in just Week 3. I’m rooting for Jasper though! MV at MC Princeton at Washington VL at FC

Vincennes Lincoln at Floyd Central
SEAL_63 replied to Fkfootball's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Sounds like a good run for FC against some stellar competition. Looking forward to this Friday, I think the Highlanders have the upper hand. As I stated, there’s much to be excited about for Lincoln this season and beyond, but this team is inexperienced at key positions on offense at this point of the season. Points have been hard to come by so far. I’ve heard rumbles of changes at certain positions, so there may be some new faces come tomorrow night. This bodes well for Floyd. On the flip side, the VL defense has been nothing short of outstanding, maybe the best defense Salters has had in his 3 years as HC. Unless FC poses a major passing threat, I think the Lincoln D can keep this close through most of the game. FC 20 VL 12 Good luck to both teams. -
Vincennes Lincoln at Floyd Central

Thanks for starting the thread! Wow how time flies! 16 years ago these teams played for the 4A Sectional 16 title in Floyd Knobs, a game the Alices would win 31-21, and they haven’t met since that time. Ironically, current Lincoln head coach Levi Salters was a senior linebacker on that squad. I remember the Highlanders were loaded with talent that season and were probably sectional favorites that year. Vincennes’ success would continue under then head coach Mike Hidde with another sectional championship in 2006, the year he retired. The decade that followed, however, was a forgettable one that saw the Alices post only 2 winning seasons. When Salters was hired in 2017, there was an immediate impact across the whole program. The wins are back up, as are varsity numbers, and the youth program is as good as I’ve seen in a long time. I’ll give more of a breakdown on the 2019 Alices a little later. Curious to hear Floyd Centrals story over the past several years. -
Yes! Much like the class that’s been exhibited from you and a handful of other GS members on the board in the past! Guess I don’t see the difference in pointing out how one program, who portrays themselves as the end-all be-all, has yet to make an appearance at LOS, while you point out that a tradition rich program has regressed. We’re both just stating the obvious.
-
You mean since 2012? When it became sooo obvious that Jasper had been supplanted by another as the best SW program outside of the SIAC? And d@mmit! That program still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves!! Even after that state finals appearan- oh.... And I think life in the SIAC will suit Jasper, and Lincoln, just fine. Jasper historically excels at every sport, boys and girls, the least of which just happens to be football at this point in time. Lincoln is just now making a return to football relevancy after a decade hiatus, and are traditionally strong in the other major sports. No doubt that both schools will take their lumps, especially in the early years. But winning the conference isn’t on either’s check list. And it’s not as if they’re projected to be bottom feeders.

Nice win for the Warriors. Obviously they’ve improved. What about Eastern though?? The state finals seem so long ago. -
If they have its not been much more than that. There’s just a lot of confusion up front right now where they’re missing blocking assignments altogether, or just not staying on them long enough for plays to develop. And when you mix that with a sophomore QB who really needs that protection...well you see the results as of now. Coach Salters didn’t seem concerned on the radio. They know where the root of their problems are offensively and it’ll get ironed out. Now granted, those problems aren’t always the result of blocking. What may have looked like a blown protection could’ve been the QB bailing from the pocket too soon or a RB misreading a lane. It’s a team game. The defense was fantastic again IMO aside from some missed tackles. They gave up the majority of their points and yardage in the 2nd half after being on the field most of the game. They just wore down. But for defending short fields the entire game, 19 pts is pretty good. My take on Boonville is that they’re as good, if not better than a year ago. They lost quite a bit to graduation, but the experience they have back is in all the right places (QB, RB, OL, DL, LB). I don’t see another team on their schedule defeating them other than Jasper might have a shot. (Linton might be interesting also) They are so good up front on both sides led by Goines. Phillips isn’t a great thrower but he’s elusive and runs the offense efficiently. And then the man of the night was their RB Mockobee. Simply put, if you don’t wrap him up like you mean it, he’s not going down. Incredible balance and elusiveness. Boonville is just a BIG team at almost every position and they use it to their advantage to wear you down. ————————————————— So much like last season, not a bad loss for Lincoln. Disappointing obviously. Winning the final Big 8 title would’ve been a great accomplishment. But you can’t rule out a tie if they take care of business the rest of the way. No breaks next week unfortunately. 5A Floyd Central and a 3 hour bus ride await...

Should be fun! The one and only meeting though unfortunately due to Vincennes changing conferences.

Boonville (1-0) at Vincennes Lincoln (1-0) GAME TIME: 7:30 pm ET, Inman Field. COACHES: Darin Ward, 30-15 in 5th year at Boonville, 100-45 in 14th year overall. Levi Salters, 18-5 in 3rd year at Vincennes. SAGARIN RATINGS: Vincennes, 54.23, 114th overall, 14th in 3A. Boonville, 51.54, 127th overall, 31st in 4A. LAST OUTING: Boonville defeated Washington, 42-6. Vincennes defeated Evansville Bosse, 28-10. OPPONENTS' RECORDS: Boonville 0-1. Vincennes 0-1. SERIES LAST 35 YEARS: Vincennes, 29-11 LAST MEETING: Boonville, 40-26, Aug. 24, 2018. jh PREDICTION: Vincennes, 24-23. The final meeting between these two teams could end up being the most meaningful, as both have sights set on a conference title. Both are popular picks to win the Big8 so this one could go a long way. Not sure how to gauge the Pioneers in 2019. There hasn’t been as much hype as compared to last years team that lost quite a few to graduation. And their annual opener against Washington usually never provides much clarity. I know they return their Sr QB Phillips, which is huge. They also have a couple receivers and some key linemen coming back. And they’re the champs until someone proves different! For me, that’s enough to expect a battle come Friday. Lincoln, on the other hand, learned quite a bit about themselves down at Enlow last week. Some of it was very good...some kind of bad. They were stellar defensively at every level, smothering the young QB for Bosse and causing 8 turnovers. Obviously, Phillips and the Boonville offense will be a much bigger test that I believe this defense is ready for. Offensively, the Alices just were not good. Pass protection has to be better this week or it’s gonna be a long night. At the very least, the run game will need to be more consistent to keep the opponent honest. And I think that will happen. I don’t see Boonville having the same caliber of defensive front that Bosse threw at us.
