Last year I felt like a few things went Mishawaka's way to allow them to still be in it versus Snider at the end. The deeper I dig, the more I'm coming to terms that Mishawaka, more than likely, was the second best team in 5A last season. I have a hard time with DC being "not better" than Merrillville and Valpo. The Merrillville/Valpo game went to the wire and could have gone in either direction. Merrillville and DC played Snider with equal toughness in my opinion. The only difference is that DC mustered two scoring drives against Snider compared to Merrillville's zero. Both games were relatively tight midway through the third quarter before Snider imposed their will in each game. After consideration, I'll give you Mishawaka at #2, but 3-5 could go in any order.

Here is how I would rank them:

1. Snider

2 Mishawaka - Gave Snider the best game by far all tournament

3. Valparaiso - They would have given Snider a better game than Merrillville without question. I remember watching the Valpo/Merrillville and hoping Merrillville would win as had Valpo won the Snider game would have been at Valpo and they had a better offense than Merrillville. I knew Snider would beat Merrillville easily, just a bad matchup for Merrillville

4. Merrillville - I base this on if they played Decatur Central they would have beaten them handily

5. Decatur Central - Took advantage of a weak South to their credit

Temp and Sagarin are on the same page with Elkhart with Sagarin having them at #20. It's really hard to judge Elkhart right now since they don't have a win against a quality opponent. But as I said before, losing to Concord by 1pt is nothing to be ashamed of. I probably have Elkhart in the Top 25, but I wouldn't bet on them beating Ben Davis, Pike, or Noblesville.

Elkhart's only quality game is going to be against Penn, who isn't a quality team this year.

A win against Penn does not help them but a loss to Penn, wont hurt them? I am sorry but ranked in the top 25 right now is too high...especially with Penn being ranked beneath them.

If Penn had not crapped the bed against Mishawaka, and Elkhart lost a tight game to Penn, maybe a 7-2 Elkhart can be justified as a top 25 team.

Still gotta reward wins.  Elkhart’s schedule isn’t a world beater but it also isn’t an egg beater either.

In my opinion, an undefeated Concord squad and a 1 loss Elkhart squad (who played a one point game) deserve to be ranked over 3 loss HCC/MIC teams even if I don’t think they’d win head to head.

Games HAVE to matter, otherwise, I’d shuffle around the same 25 teams weekly.

I get it, I really do....We all know that the 3 loss HCC team is better....maybe it is hard to justify 1-3 over 3-1, but if that 1-3 team ends up 5-3 and Elkhart ends up 7-2 I am going to rank that 5-3 team ahead of Elkhart.

If Elkhart destroys Penn, by all means rank them in the top 25, I don't see it happening.

I have been wrong before and I don't see Penn taking two dumps against two local teams this year.

You have Penn in the 30-40 range I am assuming?

To be honest I struggle with ranking the smaller schools and judging them against the bigger ones. My gut says based on your current 25, they are probably in the 30 range.

I am so disgusted with the loss to Mishawaka, I don't even like talking about Penn right now. But, here I am bumping my jibs on and on.

  1. Brownsburg
  2. Westfield
  3. Center Grove
  4. Warren Central
  5. Crown Point
  6. Lawrence North
  7. Indianapolis Cathedral
  8. Carmel
  9. Fort Wayne Snider
  10. Fishers
  11. Hamilton Southeastern
  12. Columbus North
  13. Carroll (Fort Wayne)
  14. New Palestine
  15. Concord
  16. Mishawaka
  17. Bishop Chatard
  18. Lafayette Jefferson
  19. Elkhart
  20. Evansville Reitz
  21. Avon
  22. Ben Davis
  23. Plainfield
  24. Pike
  25. Martinsville

I've been impressed with Martinsville thus far, their comeback against Decatur was something else! Their game against Plainfield to end the season should be one to watch.

I think all 8 HCC teams would beat Elkhart.

You may actually be right but I cannot continue to rank teams that are sub .500 in good faith.

I expect Avon and Ben Davis to fall off the list in the event of losses this Friday.

I'll take Elkhart over Franklin Central.

I would not put money on that, they are an unproven commodity that will only have one test this season before they get the pleasure of either playing Carroll or Snider....and there is no way Elkhart beats either team.

@BTF I am not trying to crap on you or your thoughts, I just don't trust Elkhart and knowing their schedule is weak like Penn's I just don't want you going to the well for them and get let down.

Like I always say to the Indy guys, I'll defer to your region. You know the area better than I do. It just seems to me that Concord might be a pretty good team this year, so Elkhart's one point loss isn't looking so bad. But again, I'll defer.

Mishawaka doesn't lose its FB last year that game looks a lot different.

You really think he would have made a difference? Snider's always good against the run, but when one of their best defenses of all time over commits to the run, they're pretty dangerous. I really don't think it would have mattered. The only way Mishawaka was moving the ball that night was through the air.

Man I get it, Concord may go on to do big things, we will know for sure in a couple weeks if I am right.

Like I said I may be wrong, but just based off the history of Elkhart they look good on paper but come up small in the bigger games.

Do you think Mishawaka wins state if they get past Snider last year?

Yes!!! Mishawaka was by far the best team Snider played in the playoffs

Looking forward to your next big project. Or at least a response in the Bud Wright thread.

Nah, drop that number to 20. Snider didn't play their best game against the Cavemen. We can go back and forth on this, but lets just call it for what it was............a great game.

Doubtful. Snider played its worst game against Mishawaka and still won. While I fully acknowledge Mishawaka was the best team Snider played in the tourney, honestly, Snider didn’t have another game that was close. Mishawaka wasn’t going to be able run the ball on that defense, your FB would have been shutdown. I think Mishawaka would have beaten Merrillville, but who knows? Lots of athletes on that team and Mishawaka has always struggled with that. Decatur Central should have been a team you could beat.
