Muda69 Posted December 30, 2024 Author Posted December 30, 2024 Mr. Doyel's take: https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2024/12/29/colts-vs-giants-out-of-2024-nfl-playoffs-qb-in-2025-nfl-draft/77298135007/ Quote ... This was a game that showed everything wrong with the Colts. Notice I didn’t call it the game that showed everything wrong with the Colts. That would imply this game was uniquely awful, when it wasn’t. We’ve seen this game before: Star running back Jonathan Taylor dropping a ball to send the Colts’ playoff hopes hurtling toward the nearest black hole. Head coach Shane Steichen picking the damndest time to get cowardly. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s scheme falling apart because he stays cowardly. Defensive backs missing tackle after brutal tackle. Offensive linemen committing penalties and surrendering sacks. Joe Flacco looking his age. Adonai Mitchell dropping a pass, but not from franchise QB Anthony Richardson, because franchise QB Richardson is on the sideline again in street clothes, gently kneeling, presumably because his back makes it too uncomfortable to stand. This has been a season that showed everything wrong with the Colts. Notice I didn’t call it the season that showed everything wrong with the Colts. That would imply this season has been uniquely awful, when … etc. ... Which quarterback should the Colts pick in the 2025 NFL Draft: Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Miami’s Cam Ward, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Georgia’s Carson Beck? Those are the four who could, probably will, be taken in the first round. You ask me, Sanders is the guy. You ask me, it’s not close. Wait, what are you asking me? You: Why would the Colts draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft? Me: Face-palm emoji. Listen to me: I love me some Anthony Richardson. On the field: His size, speed, arm strength. His touch with the football, his fearlessness to drive it downfield. Off the field: His kindness, his combination of bravado (what did he just say?) and humility (give me a hug!). But I just … can’t. Can you? Can you spend another offseason, then another 17-game NFL schedule in 2025, hoping along with the Colts that Richardson figures it out? The talent is there. Don’t be ridiculous. So is the intellect. But somewhere between that high-powered brain and high-powered arm, the signal goes askew and a pass is thrown in the wrong spot. Know how, in the NFL, you are what your record says you are? Same goes for a quarterback’s numbers. Great QB’s don’t need great talent to play great. Check the supporting casts of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson over the years. Been some bums those guys lifted to greatness. ... Leave it to the Colts – leave it to Gus Bradley’s defense – to turn Drew Lock into Andrew Luck: 17-for-23 for 309 yards, four touchdowns and no picks. That’s a passer rating of 155.3, just below the perfect score of 158.3, and still more than twice his career average. That’s what this Colts defense can do for you: Make you twice the player you are, and three times the overall offense. The Giants entered this game dead last in the NFL in scoring at 14.3 points ppg. That’s what, two touchdowns per game? The Giants scored six TD’s on Sunday. If Gus Bradley steps foot into the Colts facility again, and he’s doing anything but cleaning out his locker, call security. Because he shouldn’t be there. ... In that regard, it was a lot like Steichen’s treatment of Richardson last week against Tennessee, when Richardson threw a terrible interception and Steichen called 12 consecutive running plays. Richardson was barely asked to throw the ball again, and afterward Steichen said that wasn’t a response to his latest interception, but to the success of the ground game. But that’s the 2024 Indianapolis Colts for you: No accountability. You see what receivers coach Reggie Wayne said last week when reporters asked him about the lateral Adonai Mitchell blindly threw across the field at Denver, where it was picked off in mid-air by Denver’s Nik Bonitto and returned 50 yards for a game-sealing touchdown? Said Reggie Wayne: "That wasn't his fault, man. Y'all need to chill out with that. That wasn't his fault. He did what he was supposed to do. What do y'all want him to do different?" Where’s that face-palm emoji? These Colts are consistent, as I was saying: No accountability from coaches. Steichen getting weirdly conservative, like calling a running play up the middle on third-and-8 at the Giants 40, gaining 5 yards, then trying a 54-yard field goal on fourth-and-3. And missing it. The Giants went down and scored for a 14-3 lead. Consistently frustrating, this team. Bad health for Richardson. Blown tackles by the secondary, specifically (and typically) safeties Julian Blackmon and Nick Cross, but also, strangely, nickel cornerback Kenny Moore on some big plays by New York. Next to nothing from tight ends. An offensive lineman du jour – it was left tackle Bernhard Raimann’s turn on Sunday – getting beaten for a sack and called for a penalty. General Manager Chris Ballard sticking by his inferior roster. Owner Jim Irsay sticking by Ballard. Accountability issues extending beyond the coaching staff, in other words. And then there’s Jonathan Taylor, last seen running for 218 yards last week against the Titans – and celebrating one touchdown sprint by theatrically grabbing the ball with a second hand as he crossed the goal line, carrying it into the tunnel, then refusing to let go even as teammates clawed at it in celebration. He was having some fun with his season-killing dropped football, inches before he crossed the goal line, the previous week in that loss to Denver. ... Now the season’s basically over. The Colts were playing a New York team so uninvested in this game, the New York Post’s back page speculated it would take place in an empty stadium. “Home Alone?” That was the headline over a picture of Giants coach Brian Daboll, looking like that little kid Kevin from the “Home Alone” holiday movie franchise, in a story that noted “apathy (is at an) all-time high.” Joke’s on the media, again. Fake news! Fans showed up – and jeered the Giants, then booed them, as they were carving up the Colts for a quick 21-6 lead. See, the Giants needed to lose this game to draft the quarterback of their dreams, unless they play 17 games next season against Gus Bradley. In which case, Drew Lock will be MVP of the league. Giants fans were decidedly unhappy their team led 21-13 at halftime until the Colts, realizing their predicament and playing with a newfound sense of urgency, started the second half by kicking off to New York … and allowing a 100-yard return for a touchdown. These are your 2024 Indianapolis Colts. Unprepared. Unserious. Returning home Sunday to play the 4-12 Jacksonville Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium. Shane Steichen doesn’t look a thing like that kid Kevin from “Home Alone,” but it’s all good. We’ve seen this movie before. Where is Mr. Irsay in all of this mess? Quote

PHJIrish Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 IMHO, it's about time Colt's coaches start cleaning out their offices. That includes Coach Steichen. Special teams and defensive coach, or coaches, should be looking for work too. And GM, Chris Ballard, should have been gone long ago. The last three games have been totally terrible, and yesterday was the crowning blow. Jimmy needs to clean house! I hate to see folks lose their jobs, but if you're not qualified or not doing your job, then it's time to go. Quote

I do know Kenny Pickett, backup QB for the Eagles played his game with broken ribs...took a shot prior to the game and at halftime. No way he was going to let his team down. Miles and miles of heart..... Quote

Irishman Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 I am not sure I am ready to lay this at the feet of Steichen. If things come out about him losing the locker room, or doing something crazy. He could only play the hand he was dealt. They made the playoffs with Garner F'ing Minshew playing QB most of last season. That alone is impressive. While Minshew was mediocre most of his career, I do think they miss that personality in the locker room. He had heart, and was just a tough competitor. There are multiple spots where they need upgrades; especially on defense. Quote

As Pat stated, great teams hold each other accountable and it starts with him. How much does he own? That’s very debatable…but the buck typically stops with the man at the top. Quote

He pulled the plug a bit early last week and almost allowed a Titans comeback, and Coach called for the trick play involving Mitchell in the Denver game. He's also to blame for the lackluster game the Colts played yesterday. It's not just a one game thing, it's now a hat trick. Also, it's been fun listening to Colt representatives and TV and radio personalities make excuses for the game yesterday. There's not enough spin in this world to answer for that lack of effort, in the biggest game of the season no less. Doyel was one of the few that told it like it was, Quote

I get what you mean about the HC being the leader of the team. Did you hear Pat and the crew talking about not knowing really who was in charge anymore? I think it was the Shefter interview time slot. 37 minutes ago, PHJIrish said: He pulled the plug a bit early last week and almost allowed a Titans comeback, and Coach called for the trick play involving Mitchell in the Denver game. Coach Nowlin Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Gus Bradley is poor Coordinator as he was poor HC Wasn't AR super young in his draft class, I know he had limited season at Florida, seems to be part of the equation Bears can draft em and develop them !!! haha. but yea Ballard time should be over at this point. 1 Quote
PHJIrish Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I can only take McAfee in short spurts. He's a bit too cute for my liking. But I've agreed with his analysis on this from the beginning. It doesn't take much intellect or football knowledge to figure out that the house needs to be cleaned on 56th St. Quote
