Turf 2020 and Beyond
Ballhawk replied to btownqbcoach's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
The average high there is 78, so you have a great point. It is said turf adds 10-30 degrees, so that would still be pretty warm in August and September. -

What in the holy heck would make someone go with black turf? It will be hotter than Hades on that turf. -
Who are the top 10 programs
Ballhawk replied to Trojanmp52's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Historically, these are the top 5 in all-time wins in Indiana: 1. Cathedral 774 2. Evansville Reitz 725 3. Sheridan 704 4. West Lafayette. 677 5. (tie) Linton-Stockton 666; Mishawaka 666 The next 10: 6. Hobart 654; 7. Culver Academy 650; 8. Elkhart Central (Elkhart) 648; 9. Bloomington South 647; 10. Hammond (Hammond Central) 633; 11. Rensselaer 620; 12. Carmel 614; 13. Lafayette Jefferson 607; 14. Evansville Memorial 604 Doesn't mean a lot as far as the top programs now, but interesting to see some schools on this list are still doing very well. -

That whole stadium needs to be rebuilt, not just the field. The scoreboard, stands, lights and anything else associated has fallen into extreme disrepair. Let's hope they start from scratch and replace the entire thing. -
There was a break for 15 or so years, but they were on the schedule in the mid-70s. We used to play elementary football games in a combined league for a number of years. Marion Township in Boone County is part of the Sheridan district and a lot of families have relatives in both districts since the two schools technically share a border.

Sheridan has scrimmaged C'ville for many years, they play WeBo to open the season (goes back 40+ years) and they have played North Mont in years past. They could compete with those schools, but not sure they would jump ship from the HHC. I would think if they could keep Clinton Central on the schedule (the SHS/Kirklin-CC rivalry goes back over 100 years) that would keep some folks happy.

School boundaries are already set and are not changed by annexation. If the area is part of the WeBo school district and is annexed by Lebanon, the school districts would have to agree on the boundaries being changed. I believe in Indiana school boundaries are determined by township lines. Those are not affected by annexation. For an example, look at Noblesville and the number of Noblesville residents who attend HSE Schools.

I would say the Hoosier is a much stronger conference, but the HC schools would be larger enrollment schools than the TRC, so not a true apples to apples comparison. I would add Hamilton Heights to the mix of good programs in the HC, and Twin Lakes may rebound with Coach O'Shea taking over the football program. I guess hijack was a little strong, but the topic certainly was diverted to LJ/MC/H and the NCC. It's all good.

I think a lot of schools that use Rebels in their nickname chose that mascot when the Civil War was looked upon as the battle for states rights. It was the romantic Lost Cause. As years passed you realized it was about human bondage. Didn't quite fit the romantic image. I'm sure of Roncalli's early intentions, but it was too easy to fall in with the battle flag and Yosemite Sam-looking Rebel cartoon character. I also don't think PETA is going to care about animal names unless you're trotting out live-animal mascots. I've not really noticed anyone doing this, so I think we're safe. I do think Frankfort could always go the route of claiming Oscar Mayer and the Wienermobile as their mascot if push came to shove.

I heard the NN Spartans were originally supposed to be the Yankees, but they backed off and settled for Spartans. I do understand the use of Indians if it is cartoonish or disparaging can be offensive, and Redskins is going a bit far. I would personally be more offended being called a Minuteman. That could get you a bad reputation!

Logansport applies to Hoosier Conference
Ballhawk replied to Bears62's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Why not boot BC & NW, add Logansport and Lebanon? BC & NW would have other conference options available to them. I understand BC has history with the HC, but in the now they have slipped. What other sports besides girls basketball are they competitive in the HC? -
Best High Schools for Sports in Indiana?
Ballhawk replied to tango's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Center row, second from right? -
Lebanon makes some sense as a possible candidate for the Hoosier if the Montgomery County schools & WeBo leave the Sagamore. The trek up I-65 wouldn't be too bad for them. Would WeBo be a school the Hoosier might target? I could see Northwestern looking elsewhere because they seem to be struggling in the Hoosier. I know BC was a charter Hoosier member, but other than girls basketball why do they keep being the punching bag of the Hoosier? You'd think they'd be looking elsewhere (Midwest, Hoosier North, Hoosier Heartland?). Eastern in the Hoosier Heartland has pretty much outgrown their competition. This would open a door in the HH for BC or Frankfort or both (Rossville does not have a football team). Just thoughts from a casual outside observer.

Harrison & McCutcheon out??
Ballhawk replied to US31's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
You spread 46 over 4 classes and that is 11.5 per class. It really isn't unusual for enrollment to fluctuate like this. I saw years where Sheridan had over 100 students per class and other years there were under 80. The enrollment there has been in the 420 range and has dropped to the 320-330 range. There are two new subdivisions but the enrollment isn't growing that large. It is very hard to predict, but I understand WeBo's situation as you would have to have development in Advance, Jamestown & Thorntown. Not really booming suburbia.
