I disagree.  Therer are tons of great Indiana rural high schools that are based in small towns that have huge pride and local support.  Rural small town school and rural county school are not the same  When you place one centralized school in a 20 x 20 mile area, you get a feeling of remoteness and disconnection.  That is the downside of

    the county school model.

Explain Western Boone... or Seeger Memorial?  Both have multiple small towns and multiple elementaries that feed into 1 Jr High and High School.  There isn't a parade from homecoming around the "town".  I think you will find instances of both support/pride and instances of programs that stuggle to get that.

It really is what came first the chicken (success) or the egg (support/pride/identity)?

I am from northern Indiana, but have enjoyed the Western Boone success and following them the past few years in state tournaments.  I don’t know much about the school, their coach, program.  Are they going to be solid for some time or was this a case of having a couple really good classes?  Will their coach look to move on to bigger and better things, or is he have ties to the community?  Anyone in the know of the Stars, I would like to hear your assessment.

They have classes, but the last few years the success have pieces for a few classes the last few years that have made them successful.  They will lose 10 seniors.  6 or 7 that played a lot (1 that would have, but was injured early in the year).  They played a lot of Sophomores last year and a couple of Freshman.  The Coaching Staff has done a really good job getting kids to buy in and they do a really good job of preparing the kids and adjusting their plans with the talent they have.  They have been in 3A in the past, but as XStar mentioned, they have ran into some really good teams during the tournament.  The Sagamore Conference is a 2A-4A conference/schedule.  They have some talent returning, but they have some talent that graduates (as has been the case for the last few years).

As for Coach Pelley, I think he has probably had opportunities the last few years to move on if he wanted to.  His Staff is pretty much all former Webo players (with the exception of himself, his Dad, and the Strength & Conditioning Coach).  He is involved in the youth program more than just a figure that shows up every once in a while.  The kids learn a base of the offensive plays in youth and that continues to build into Jr. High.  I think there is something special about the community and what has occured the last several years.

Parents, kids, local businesses, community support have all bought in.  You have Dads that were former players (and former youth coaches) and their kids are in HS (or already graduated) coming back into the youth program to coach/teach kids because they want the program to continue to succeed.  Players that don't just show up on Saturday mornings after their film/workouts to watch the younger kids, but will come out to practices and help out.... They come out on Saturdays and watch and high five the kids... That encourage the kids.  None of that is mandated or forced upon them by the Staff.  The kids understand the position they are in... They understand these kids watch them every Friday night and the kids love it when those "Friday Night Stars" come watch them.  Many 15-18 year old kids would struggle with that kind of responsibility.  It really is a family type atmosphere.

The issue isn't do you count virtual students in your enrollment....the answer is yes BTW, the issue is many families (in the thousands) didn't send their kid to any school this year in any form.   This occurred in higher rates in urban and very rural areas with lack of access to internet can be an issue.  It'll be interesting to see how the IHSAA handles this.

But wouldn't those kids HAVE to be enrolled in some school (somewhere)?

My assumption is that regardless if they went in person every day, did full remote, or did a hybrid they were enrolled in some school corporation.

  4. We start 2-3rd grade with tackle. No kickoffs (each team starts at their own 40) and punts is a 35 yard walk off by the officials (cant go inside  20).  Really at this age its teaching/coaching the right way how to block/tackle, but if I’m 100% honest they just kind of run into each other and fall down.  We have weight limits to run the ball.  Its getting the kids accustomed to pads/helmet and contact.

Most of Kyle Ralph's assistants are not teachers so I am not sure about bringing them with. However, I do think if he wants it it would be his. I do not see Kirschner trying for it. Pelley no way. Fisher is a great coach, but I don't see him going for it. Nick Hart maybe, but the rumor is that he will take over at Brownsburg in a couple of years.

I see Warren hiring an assistant within the program. Russ Mann potentially. I also could see Pat Mallory from LN going for the job or maybe a coordinator from Center Grove. CG coaches have been very loyal at CG and seem to be content with staying there so that may be a bit of a stretch.

You could also make a case for Scott Turnquist from Zionsville. in 2 years he won a 6A sectional for Ziosnville and then a 5A state runner up. Used to be the OC at Carmel so maybe he would want to get back into the MIC.

Strong showing for the conference.  Webo turn around was a great coaching effort.  Hard to believe the same team we dominated week 4 went on to win state.   How often does a team finish third in conference win a state championship.  Solid effort by Danville, but I felt they were a bit conservative against Chatard.  Probably wouldn’t have mattered.  Tri-West caught the injury bug and COVID quarantines the wrong week.  Would have liked to been full strength both times vs Danville.  Lebanon entire season was disrupted by Corona shutdown.  And they never recovered.  The rest of the conference needs to get it together.  Frankfort is improving.  South and North are there typical selves.  And Crawfordsville needs to figure something out.  They are getting worse if that is possible.

Technically they didn't finish 3rd because no Sagamore Championship was awarded.  😀

I completely understand what you are saying.  The kids and coaches worked their tails off and they grew up.  These kids losing the personnel and leaders like Connor Hole or Casey Foster or athletes like Spencer Wright and Brett Wethington didn't get the opportunity to have the summer to learn and grow but the last 2 years they have had a lot of practice .  We lose 10 seniors, 6-7 that played significant minutes.  I think we are all looking forward to seeing what 3A has in store for us.

John Harrell must not have updated his site otherwise I would have thrown Webo in there.

Interesting... Webo is on a great run and maybe they will be able to maintain it?  But, I think Webo was fortunate to make it to state and needed a FG to win it. While Chatard, Cathedral, and Roncalli all won by double digits.  And this isn't the first time we've seen those schools do that.  It's not Chatard, Cathedral, or Roncalli's fault that they are that much better than the rest of 3A, 4A, and 5A, but we've NEVER seen a public school do that.

I'm a reasonable guy, and I will not sit here and say these schools recruit.  Because they don't need too.  But, clearly there's something going on here, right?  Why won't those schools push to move up and gain more national exposure?  Those 3 schools are the only schools who could push the Big 4 and potentially win a 6A title from what I've seen over the years.

Fortunate to make it to State?  Webo Dominated everyone in the South of 2A.  HC gave them some problems in the 1st half, but Webo still won by 2 scores.  Yes, they needed a FG to win state, but Webo had the ball 32 of the 48 minutes.
