If Ole Miss did end up in 3A, I could see them moving into sectional 27. Concordia is the best team in the current alignment of that sectional. Delta and Marion both had a higher Sagarin rating than Concordia last season, and Ole Miss beat both of them to win sectional 20.

Did you look at the enrollment trend of both schools? North Clay Middle School and Northview High School have both had declining enrollments for at least the last 5 years. North Clay has gone from over 860 to just under 800, and Northview has gone from 1050 to 975.

Northview is a neighboring school for both Terre Haute schools and they have 975 students. Owen Valley is not too far away and their enrollment is around 715. Northview can compete with THN and THS in several sports, but Owen Valley would struggle. Mooresville, Plainfield, and Decatur Central are all about an hour from Terre Haute, and Martinsville is about an hour and 20 minutes. I don’t see any of those schools being eager to leave the Mid-State Conference to pair up with THN/THS, and the other Mid-State schools farther east would have no interest in bringing them into the conference. They would be a competitive fit in the Mid-State, but not a good geographic fit. That is probably the best place those two schools could go.

I would not expect Conference Indiana to be around in 5 years. It will take the collapse of that conference to get Columbus North to move to the same conference as Columbus East (more trophies for everyone in Columbus if they aren’t competing with each other). From a competitive standpoint across all sports, I think it makes sense to have Madison, Silver Creek, Seymour, Jennings County, Scottsburg, and Brownstown Central in a 6 team conference. Then the Hoosier Hills can stay an 8 team conference by adding Bloomington North, Bloomington South, and Columbus North to the remaining 5 members (Columbus East, BNL, Floyd Central, New Albany, and Jeffersonville).

I’d like to see all games prior to Labor Day start at 8, all games for the rest of September start at 7:30, and all games in October and November start at 7.

There are far too many divisions within the South Bend school district that don’t align from one school level to another. In my opinion, the kids that go to the same elementary should then attend the same middle school. The kids that attend the same middle school should then attend the same high school. There is no “feeder” system that connects any of the schools. I would propose that district lines be redrawn to cover all levels (elementary, middle, and high school. Two possibilities would be to go with a 3 high school plan (Adams - NE, Riley - S, LaSalle - NW) or a 2 high school plan (Adams - E, LaSalle - W). If the 3 high school plan is favored, then each should have 2 feeder middle schools (6 total in the district). The district boundaries for the 2 middle schools that feed into each high school should be the same as the boundaries for the high school. Each middle school would then have 2 or 3 feeder elementary schools. Those elementary schools should have the same boundaries as the middle schools they feed into. If the 2 high school plan is favored, it’s pretty simple. Split the district in half with 1 high school on each side (probably Adams and LaSalle for central locations). 3 middle schools on each side. I’m not sure if the existing facilities would be able to accommodate 2300 or so students. Under a 3 high school plan, I think they would need to consolidate Clay with Washington at LaSalle as LaSalle Lions suggested. Clay could then become a middle school. Washington would also convert to a middle school, basically taking the place of Dickinson. Dickinson will then convert to an elementary that consolidates students from Warren and Coquillard. Those two schools would close. Tarkington would also consolidate with Swanson, which would close. The district would then be divided with uniform district lines like this: Adams HS - Jefferson & Edison MS - Tarkington, McKinley, Madison, Nuner, Darden Elem’s Riley HS - Jackson & Navarre MS - Hay, Monroe, Marshall, Harrison, Lincoln Elem’s LaSalle HS - Washington & Clay MS - Dickinson, Muessel, Wilson, Kennedy, Marquette Elem’s

Their senior class this year has around 450, and grades 9-11 all have right at 500. The 8th grade class from their 3 feeder schools totals 572. Not all of those will end up at Harrison, but even if it ends up being 550, that could be a net gain of 100 students. Two things may save them from 6A for one more cycle - Elkhart consolidation and success factor. They’ll probably be cheering for New Pal to win at least a regional next year.

School enrollments for the 2019-20 school year have been posted by the DOE. This year is NOT a “count year” for realignment, but these numbers may give some indication of enrollment trends and possible movement for the next alignment cycle. This year (19-20) is the first of a 2 year cycle, with the next realignment beginning with the 21-22 school year. Next year’s enrollment numbers (20-21) will be used to set the next realignment, not the numbers listed below. I included only schools that play football. A couple notes to make: Elkhart Central and Memorial will consolidate next year. If you look at the consolidations in Anderson, Muncie, and Parke County in the last decade, the consolidated schools have retained between 89%-93% of the combined enrollment of the 2 consolidating schools the year prior to merging. Using the middle of that range, 91% of the combined enrollment of Central and Memorial would put them around 2880 students. I think there will be some growth at Jimtown, Elkhart Christian (no FB) and possibly Northridge next year when the Elkhart schools merge. There are 4 IHSAA member schools (2 that have football) that do not share enrollment data with the DOE - Culver Academies, Park Tudor, University, and FW Canterbury. I left their enrollments as they were for last year. That isn’t accurate, but it “holds their spot” in the enrollment data. I included Dugger Union even though they are not tournament eligible to see where they would align when they become tournament eligible. Those are the enrollments from the 18-19 school year that the IHSAA used for the class alignment that began this year. The numbers I posted are the enrollments for the current school year (19-20). That data comes from the Department of Education.

Which school from 3A south would you suggest switching with Chatard? The furthest north of any of the schools in sectionals 29-32 is Tri-West. It is almost “due west” of Chatard. So it’s basically a wash if you are trying to pick the school that is further north. The IHSAA doesn’t propose the alignment, representatives of the member schools do. The natural pairing would be to keep Tri-West and Danville together, and Chatard and Brebeuf together. If you send Danville and Tri-West north, and Brebeuf and Chatard south, then you’ll have people argue that there is some kind of bias against the schools in the southern half of the state since they would have to go through the Indy parochial schools. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and I think the committee for 3A made the most logical choice they could with splitting those sectionals north and south.

This year would have been a relatively easy one to organize neutral site semi-state games. Each site hosts 2 games on Saturday afternoon at 1 and 4. Just like basketball semi-state. No. I like the 12 team, 2 division, week 9 crossover format if an 8 team conference is not possible. 9 or 11 teams isn’t easy to work with. 8 is best, 12 is good, 6 or 10 are ok. Less than 6 isn’t worth having a conference. I posted my hypothetical new HCC in one of DT’s other topics. So let’s adapt that here. I think Mt. Carmel leaving the Big 8 was in their best interest anyway, and it will lead to a better grouping of schools in the remaining conferences. Mt. Carmel would have honestly been a better fit in the Pocket than the Big 8.

You are correct that my suggestion of a 12 team HCC will absolutely never happen. It is far too easy to keep things the way they are (the dream of most AD’s) and that is fine. I think the issues you mentioned could easily be resolved. 1. Don’t schedule non-conference games against teams from the other division. If you do, don’t schedule teams that are in your sectional or regional. 2. Crossover games do not have to be a mess. Just have all the teams in the north division host them one year, then all the south division teams host the next year. AD’s would know before the season starts if they are hosting a week 9 game, so they could schedule officials and workers well in advance. Just like any other game that rotates between home and away each year. The only difference is that you wouldn’t know the opponent until all the division games have been played. Much easier than a sectional game or a game further into the tournament. 3. No need to use week 10. Leave it as a bye week for the 6A teams. It would also be impossible to use in the event that a conference member is in 5A and has a tournament game that week.
