  1. If you are a fan of the game, the book “When Pride Still Mattered” is an excellent book by Dave Maraniss. All kinds of cool connections in the game that I never imagined, like the ones I mentioned here. Also, when Lombardi was still teaching high school chemistry, he and his wife had a favorite spot to go to in New Jersey. They met another young couple there. The man had just started singing on weekends in the club, and the two couples remained friends throughout their lives…..the singer…..Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.
  2. Michael was an attorney in Indianapolis. He was in his 90’s when I first met him.
  3. While I still lived in Indy, of the guys I would usher with at church was Michael Layden, brother of Elmer. Michael played at ND when Elmer was the coach. I had a family at one the schools I taught at in the Broad Ripple area. The kids mom was a Stuhldreher. Other more interesting connections….Jim Crowley was the head coach at Fordham when the 7 Blocks of Granite came up one game shy of going to the Rose Bowl. That O Line was coached by Frank Leahy. One of those 7 blocks of granite was Vincent Thomas Lombardi.
  4. Everything changes after this season. While some change has occurred with NIL and the transfer portal, the game changes completely with the expanded playoff and expanded conferences for next season. Competitive programs will have to find ways to pay players. Schools have to be willing to commit to that. Even now, I don’t believe admins in Bloomington have shown a willingness to do so. I agree that Hartline is a guy to consider, but I am certain he goes to any school and starts out by saying, here is what we do in Columbus to have a top tier program; if you are not willing to commit to that, I am not your guy. I would even say the same for a guy like Mike Hart, who would also be a solid prospect. Joel Klatt said it best during the game Saturday; teams in a position where IU is are basically a farm team. Kids that are not highly recruited will go there, play one season and look for opportunities elsewhere. Guys at IU not getting playing time will likely go to a non power 5 conference to get playing time. Unless IU makes a huge push to pay some solid talent, they will be stuck where they are regardless of who the head coach is.
  5. I finally got to attend my first Notre Dame USC game a few years ago. While I love going to games at ND, this one was a different level…and awesome. One of the cool parts was Mike Collins reading the weather forecast for the game. It was rainy and cold then too, and he finishes with, “Trojan fans you are NOT in Southern California now”. Crowd went nuts.
  6. Great work @Frozen Tundra Love seeing posters dig into things like this here. This was actually a plan under consideration when we expanded to 6 classes. While the raw numbers look significant in what was 5A at the time, the math showed the greatest disparity in enrollment numbers was actually in 1A. I don’t know of an answer as to why it did not happen though.
  7. Will your Bears still pick him? 🤞🙏🤞🙏🤞🙏😁😎
  8. Well, if you are going to fall, make sure it is a complete shit show. One player played well……the FG kicker. Outplayed and outcoached in every phase of the game Other thoughts Joe Alt’s stock dropped big time. The way he got pushed and tossed around is exactly what NFL DE’s will do. Number 8 Marist Liufau really stands out….and for all the wrong reasons. For 3 weeks I have seen him run into an o line when he blitzes, miss a LOT of tackles, and just does not read well. Several big runs tonight get beyond the 2nd level because he is out of position. The last TD run was a prime example….just ran into the pile and the RB ran right by where he had been. The 15 yard penalty on him was a killer penalty. No adjustments to routes run with the constant pressure L’Ville brought all night. Run the f’ing ball…and downhill. Why they abandoned the run so early is frustrating. 4th and 11 on your own 35? Are you kidding? Finally, the first interception of the game was a clear push off by the DB. You could clearly see Flores’ upper body move back with the push off. If that is called, it does not make a difference in this one Congrats to Coach Brohm and his whole staff. Fantastic game plan and execution.
  9. Saw this on my timeline. Such an iconic image.
  10. Another legend passes. I know this will hit hard for the Bears fans here, especially those old enough to have enjoyed watching him play. Thank God for the genius of Steve Sabol and NFL Films for allowing us to see so much of his and other legends’ careers in such detail. RIP Dick https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38577860/dick-butkus-hall-fame-linebacker-chicago-bears-dies
  11. and not just a Big Ten Regular Season Champion Banner either.
  12. Props to the folks at Disney. This is pretty good https://x.com/espn/status/1708490415505039407?s=20
  13. And if you come back, you'll be pushin up daisies.
  14. Bringing in extra help as well.
  15. Yep….keeping an eye on you guys Some of you are probably too young to get this. 😂
  16. Just be careful. Posting rumors on this site about high school coaches and high school programs is not allowed. This does include one person’s interpretation/perspective of what may have happened. The only exceptions include schedule and conference changes.
  17. And now Minnesota is 0-3....wow
  18. Missing Starters LG, LT, RB, WR1, CB, and lose a starting LB in the game. So many penalties in the first half, the Packers kept shooting themselves in the foot. Even in the 3rd quarter, it did not look good. LaFleur goes for a 4th down in FG range and misses it. But from that point on, the team locked in. Defense stepped up, and the offense started clicking. What a great comeback win.
  19. It's a dead ball foul if a guy runs on. Plus there was just time for 1 play on the clock. Regardless, the best chance of winning is with 11 on the field. And if he were really paying attention, it would have been a moot point. Run him on once the 2nd down play was over.
  20. The most upsetting part at the end….the ball only got to the goal line. The goal line is 4 inches wide. It did not even get past the white of the line. Before anyone misinterprets me, I am fully aware the front of the line is the endzone. But just 4 inches. A d lineman in position helps stuff that play and we are celebrating an Irish win. That is the type of situation that haunts coaches.
  21. Yep…and had 11 for that first down play. And so on 2nd down, you see you have 10. It was incomplete so osu is in no hurry to run the next play, NOW run a guy onto the field.
  22. And apparently he is unaware they only had 10 the play before.
  23. While the plays on offense the last drive did not work, I did not mind the screen call. BUT, the screen I would have run, they only ran once. It was a double screen, and Hartman hits a TE that is f’ing WIDE open down the middle. There should have been another option for Hartman if that one was not open, and I don’t think there was. Defense is a different story. What has pissed me off for two years now is the pass rush. More specifically, the LB that spies the RB….if the RB stays, he typically goes late on the pass rush…..and NEVER gets there. Why send him inside to just rune into a lineman who already counted him in the pass pro? McCord was able to break contain a few times. That cannot happen. So either send the LB off the edge to contain? McCord is a pocket passer, and not a runner, so no need to spy. But what would have been a smarter move for that LB…..if the back stays you sink. Stay in the middle of the field but sink. The routes in the middle in the 8-12 yard range were wide open far too often. At least force a more difficult throw instead of wasting a guy on the pass rush who never gets there. As far as the 10 guys on the field. I will disagree that it is the head coaches job. In a tight formation, like what osu was in, and with the missing spot being on the far side, it’s just too difficult to see that from where he is. To me, it falls on the coaches in the pressbox. They have the clearest view. And I am guessing there were 4 or 5 defensive coaches up there. Someone had to see it. Having spent a number of years in the pressbox, that was always part of my role. It’s far too simple a thing to blow it like that. In that spot, you run his ass onto the field. I don’t care if it is a penalty or not, you have GOT to have 11. So you give them a yard. You have stopped the, before in short yardage.
