NCAA Division I rules prohibits them from hosting high school games. Also the hash is further out on a college field. Those are the issues that have been brought out in the past when this issue has been brought up.

I was a Plymouth High School Saturday night for the 4A boys sectional championship game. Had a great Prime Rib dinner at the Brass Rail before the game. Best part was I sneaked into the gym without paying. If anybody would have asked I would have told them that I was the bus driver for the Michigan City High School cheerleaders. Always enjoy my visits to Plymouth. Really nice town. Kind of reminds me of Hobart.

Michigan City has had turf since 2009 at a price tag of $720,000 and had it replaced over the summer however Michigan City High School and Ames Field are located in two completely separate parts of the city about 4 miles apart because it used to serve both Elston and Rogers before the two slchools consolidated and Ames Field was demolished and reconstructed at the cost if $6,000,000 in 1995. The is even an elevator that goes up to the press box. Next season we are going to have a brand new score board with a video screen and new LED lighting.

At age 60 it looks like coach K has found a place to make his last stop.

Between 2000-2003 KV had a different head football coach each season. Imagine having your son playing for a different head coach during their entire four year cycle of high school.

Per the Region Sports Network Kirk Kennedy has been hired as the new head football coach at Kankakee Valley. Welcome back to the region coach K.

Coach Mattix left Portage in 1994 to join the coaching staff at Valparaiso University. Came back to Portage to serve as athletic director after Larry Casbon retired. Left Portage and joined coach Buzea's staff at Michigan City between 2007-2009 and join Buzea when he left Michigan City for Homewood Floosmoor. Recent years he came back to Portage to serve as the coach for the freshman team. I believe he also joined coach Buzea's staff at Crown Point this season. Great coach, man and family.

An educator and longtime coach associated with Portage football. He first came to Portage in the fall of 1971 when he coached the JV football team. He left after the 1975 school year to coach elsewhere, but he returned in 1984 to Portage as an asst coach and was the Head Coach from 1989-1993. From his Hall of Fame bio, you can see was from Hobart and he coached at a number of places in his career, but Portage is where he started. I'm fortunate to have been on his first team (he missed practice the day his oldest was born, the next day his smile was electric, and everyone was smiling) and also there the day he went into the HoF. I know he made a difference in my life back in the day. He also coached freshmen and junior high hoops for a number of years, touching countless lives with his positive nurturing personality. As a former player said, "He was a great coach for sure, but a genuine human being." One of the truly great ones on and off the field. A legend. Prayers to the Mattix family. RIP Coach.

Skiwait American Legion Post 451 hosted the team meal on the Thursday night prior to the semi-state game and presented the team with this plaque.

#2-Warren Foster and his family working chain gang Friday night at the semi-state game at Ames Filed between Zionsville - Michigan City. Warren has been both working chain gang and has been the official score keeper for Elston, Rogers and MCHS for the past 57 consecutive seasons. Friday night was his first ever semi-state. Warren Foster is somebody who should be enshrined in the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.

Big part of the life style here is being on the south shore of Lake Michigan and our close proximity to the city of Chicago. I’ve considered it to be part of Chicagoland.

For big crown games we park at the Marquette Mall at US 20 and 421 by the former JC Penney store and we run a shuttle bus to and from Ames Field. We have a seating capacity of 4,500, after that the fire Marshall will not let anyone in. Visitors enter the gate on the northwest side of the stadium.

This will be the first time Ames Field or even Michigan City will ever host a semi-state in any sport. Elston won boys basketball in 1966 and girls cross country in 1993 and 1994 and MCHS won volleyball in 1995 but the semi-states were either away games or at neutral sites. Everybody here is very excited and all the business have all their marquees and store front windows with a message in support of the team.

No, Ames Field underwent a complete and total $6 million dollar reconstruction when Elston and Rogers consolidated in 1995. Field turf went in 1995 and was replaced this past summer. Next season we will be getting a brand new fancy video scoreboard and LED lighting upgrades.
