They play in arguably the weakest pound for pound sectional in the state. Tonight was their first win against a team with a winning record all year.

    Tech had a winning record.

BD also didn't pick their Sectional, but they're now 3-0 in Regionals under Coach Simmons. I guess that he's doing something right with the time he's had to prep. I'd also say they were big underdogs in 2 of those.

I love the MIC but you'd be under a rock if you think the HCC isn't creeping at the door. @temptationhas been warning us about this for 2-3 yrs. All it took was a fantastic BD gameplan to flip the script. The HCC will be king in a few years but sometimes a team with experience (BD) can overcome a relative newcomer (Brownsburg).

BD has guys that have now started three-straight Regional Championships.

  3. For the third-straight year, it's Ben Davis at Center Grove in the Class 6A Semi-State. The Giants nearly beat CG in 2019. They were in the game for the majority of the first 30 minutes in 2020. Can they pull the major upset in 2021?

Sure they can. We've seen the Trojans just a little off the last few games. It's still been good enough to win, but I think this Ben Davis team is coming in heavy with a freight train of confidence. They blew the doors off Brownsburg before the Bulldogs knew what hit 'em. Will it be good enough to win on Friday night?

CG's awfully good. I'm sure Coach Moore will get their attention this week in practice. He may be fighting a team that feels that a championship is inevitably theirs. BD, on the other hand, I believe is playing with confidence and poise. They've been battered and beaten this year and have had things happen off the field that completely were out of their control. I think it's galvanized them.

Give me the Giants in a tight one. Good health to both teams. Let's have some fun on Friday.

Ben Davis hadn’t beat a soul until tonight. Simply put, this is a below average Ben Davis team. There is no sugarcoating it. If Brownsburg was ever going to break through, this was their night. They didn’t bother to show up. Center Grove will beat this BD team by 30 points next week.

Well, that may be true, but they're going to the Final Four with a chance to beat Center Grove, a team that they led at the half and were within three of with four minutes to play in the third quarter this year. This is a healthier, more confident version of the Giants too. Call them whatever you want. They just beat a good Brownsburg team. They've got a kid that's thrown for almost 3,000 yards. That's only happened twice in BD history. But, you clearly know all great oracle of Ben Davis Football.

This 4-5 Ben Davis team isn’t very good. But alas, per @temptation the HCC is bound to take over the world.

Or a Ben Davis team that's about two plays from being 9-3...but...you know. Whatever.

Ya just gotta love a guy like @Footballking16 who comes in and dumps on kids on one of their best nights.

Thought this would be a fun discussion on a beautiful but cold Regional Night.

What is your favorite tournament moment(s)?

The first one that jumps into my mind was the New Pal & Columbus East Semistate game in 2014, at New Pal. The crowd was electric and it was blisteringly cold, and New Pal won on a last-second field goal.

Ben Davis vs Center Grove in the 2014 Semistate where BD was down by three late in the 4th quarter and Chris Evans broke a 74 yd TD run to give the Giants the lead and the win.

That Evans run was electrifying. What a football game.

1990, My first high school State Championship game witnessed as a fan as the Ben Davis Giants defeat the Marion Giants.

1991, As a high school junior, witnessing the Ben Davis Giants win the National Championship. I was the statistician for WBDG and went through many pencils. Got to see the state game from the sidelines.

1992, Got to call the 5A Championship Game on WBDG where Seth Ziegel kicked a field goal late to win the game for Fort Wayne Snider.

1999, Damon Fine nails a 56-yard field goal to defeat Arlington in Regional

2000, James Banks leads a late drive with no timeouts and scores to defeat Decatur Central in Sectional.

2001, James Banks takes a poorly snapped ball on 4th down deep in Warren Central territory and weaves his way for a touchdown.

2002, Playing on a soupy field at Warren Central, Ben Davis stuffs Warren on 4th down to preserve a 35-28 OT win in Regional.

2008, Ben Davis goes across town and thumps Warren, 45-28, in Regional to advance to Semi-State.

2011, Ben Davis overcomes a 28-7 deficit in the second half to beat Brownsburg in Sectional, 38-31, in 2OT.

2014, BD beats WC in a shootout at home. Then they defeat CG in the Semi-State. They get down 17-0 to Carmel before scoring the next 42 points to win State, 42-24, over the Hounds who had beaten them 37-7 in the regular season. The 2014 Giants remain my favorite Ben Davis Football Team. I cried happy tears for my friend Mike Kirschner.

2017, BD leaves no doubt in a 63-14 win over Penn that wasn't that close. The Giants set all sorts of records in that one.

2018, After allowing 70 points in the regular season, the Giants worry the heck out of Warren Central before falling to the Warriors 49-28 in the Sectional. Yeah, it was a blowout, but after the 3-6 regular season, the Giants played hard and left it all on the field.

2019, After finishing the regular season 5-4, BD nearly stuns the Center Grove Trojans and nearly advances to the State Championship game. A late drive was thwarted by a fumble.

2020, Ben Davis upsets the Carmel Greyhounds in Regional.

A Cathedral coach admitted the kid in question (assuming only one) played excessive quarters.  He didn't apologize and indicated he didn't agree with the rule.  #letthekidsplay  You did read that, right?  To say his quote on GID was flippant would be an understatement.  What kind of culture does it take for a member of a high school coaching staff respond on a high school forum, justifying non-compliance with IHSAA rules??

It would be up to the opposing school to bring this to the attention of the IHSAA. I know Ben Davis had a situation where they played a varsity game a few years back where a basketball player played too many quarters, and it was not pushed so the game is still a win for that team (which shall remain nameless) even though it was known it happened.

For clarity, the team was not Cathedral, Center Grove, or New Pal.

The second example comes from my playing days when Cathodal hired alumni to Referee there basketball games. Can you image looking up and seeing  FastpacedO or Footballking16 referring against you. May be they can be unbiased. hmmm

Not sure when you played, but most places use assigners now. I've occasionally seen a BD grad work a BD game, but the Athletic Dept. just pays the refs that get assigned here.

Serious question that is in no way intended as a shot towards any program...

Does BD even game plan for the sectional?  Do they have to?

I know there is coach speak and no one would admit it but I bet they have been preparing for either Brownsburg or Carmel since the end of the regular season.  They'll play their best football...AGAIN.

Don't take this as gospel because I don't know what Coach Simmons does.

I do know that for years, BD's Sectional included Northwest, Tech, Perry, Southport, Decatur, Pike, and a rotating team that at times included Manual and Franklin Central. Back in those days, they would spend most of their time on their prospective Regional opponent. That was in the Dullaghan/Allen days. So, back then, they'd get three weeks of prep for Warren.

In more recent times, the Sectional has included the Hendricks County powerhouses or Derek Moyers' Pike outfit. One year, BD had to play through Moyers and Pike, Avon, Warren, Center Grove, and Carmel to win State. The last three years, they've gotten a better draw. I don't expect that will continue into next year. I would fully expect the Giants to be moved around. Zionsville and Carmel will have to go somewhere. Since the IHSAA won't split same district schools into different Sectionals, Perry/Southport, LN/LC, HSE/Fishers are all a package deal. Then you have the singletons like Tech who is the only 6A in IPS, BD, Warren, Pike, NC, and FC. Should be interesting to see where BD gets shuffled when the committees get together.
