  1. Should also be noted that the game at Center Grove was key to where BD is now. Coach Simmons tells a great story when asked about it. Essentially, he did an analysis of the first four games and came down with some numbers. His review showed that the Giants played the majority of the first four games well, but it was the bad start vs. Brownsburg that buried them. The end of the half vs. Avon buried them. The end of the third quarter and start of the fourth against PIke prevented a bigger win vs. the Red Devils, and then the aforementioned sequence in the Center Grove game.

He presented to the team and showed them how those small mistakes added up into big ones that were costing them games. They worked to tighten things up. He said that if they focused and reduced the seven percent of the season that was costing them games, they would win games. They did it the next week vs. Warren! Rest is history so far.

I honestly didn't think we'd be here at this point talking about the Giants in the Semi-State when they were 1-3, but here we are. Congratulations to Coach Simmons who took a lot of slings and arrows. He has, as my friend Tevin Studdard said on Twitter, "remained the same through it all."

  2. For some reason, Center Grove has had Ben Davis's number lately. The Giants lead the series, 15-13, but the Trojans have won five of the last six including the 2016 Semi-State Championship. Only the 2017 juggernaut BD team was able to defeat the Trojans in that time, 40-7.

We'll see what happens on Friday. BD's playing very well, but Center Grove is a different team with #30 on the field. The game earlier in the season came down to about four or five big plays despite the lopsided score. BD could have led at the half if not for a dropped TD. A pick 6 early in the 2nd half. BD then failed to field the kickoff and...the rout was on.

I would expect a low-scoring contest. BD's defense has been spectacular over the last seven games. They'll need to do that again. Winner of this one is the favorite to win it all, IMO.

I obviously follow them being a MIC supporter, but don’t follow them as much as I’d like being up in Greyhound territory.  That said, @BDGiant93, you have to like your odds for this to continue the run to LOS.

At their best, I think they are the best team left in 6A. They have to keep playing at this level, though. It's been a remarkable year. Very proud of the Giants no matter what happens from here on out.

I’ll second that minus Warren.  Boy though, who would’ve thought BD Vs WC is a semi-state possibility at the beginning of the season.

Heck, I'm on record as to thinking BD was practically done after week four's loss to Center Grove. I've never seen a Ben Davis team resurrect itself in quite this way. They were going nowhere fast, but Coach Simmons has done a tremendous job along with his staff. Those kids believe in him, and he believes in them.

I respect the heck out of Warren, but I just don't see them stomping anyone in the MIC at this point. I think they win, but I think this is a 28-14 or so game. I think LN stays in it. I'm just not impressed with WC's offense, overall past Mr. Wells. Warren's defense is really solid.

I'll take Penn in Sectional 2, Homestead in 3. Other than that, I agree with the rest of your picks.

    Merrillville 28, Crown Point 20

    Penn 14, Warsaw 7

    Homestead 35, Carroll 31

    Carmel 28, Westfield 17

    Brownsburg 35, Zionsville 7

    Ben Davis 42, Southport 7

Warren Central 28, Lawrence North 14

Center Grove 24, Franklin Central 3

My prognosticating scores were wrong, and I shouldn't have bought Penn.

There was a good article about how he does his operations last year (https://www.courierpress.com/story/sports/high-school/2018/06/22/john-harrell-still-enjoys-running-site-high-school-sports-junkies/725863002/). One computer, one man... Prior to Twitter, a lot of sports editors and journalists across the state would send their scores. I think his son is now involved too.

He occassionally still visits the Herald-Times to do some computer programming for the sports department (even in the early 1990s, he was automating much of the Agate (Scoreboard) Page and box scores layout with some (relatively) simple find and replace features. Similiar to HTML, the software that formats newspapers is a "markup" computer programming language. The H-T, one of my former employers, still publishes complete scores for high school and college basketball up to the last minutes before going to press (11 p.m. Eastern time). I picked up the IndyStar and half of the scores were marked as "late"... The H-T still does a good job of publishing all local and area box scores for all HS sports... Something other papers, like the IndyStar, are no longer doing.

Jeff Sagarin and John Harrell should have scholarships named after them by the IHSAA, in my opinion.

My only quarrel with John is that he doesn't recognize forfeits. If he's the official arbiter of history and stats, I think that's a weakness. I've had debates with him on this. He believes that it's what happened on the field/floor. In the rare case of the double forfeit...he just says the game never happened.

His work though...underappreciated and revolutionary. I have no idea how we operated before (even though we did).

You know, I’m going to be in Bloomington for a couple of days later this month. That’s a heck of an idea. I’d love to meet The Man himself.

I imagine John having this basement bunker with 15 screens following 15 Twitter accounts and 15 more screens with every broadcast he can find. Then still frantically Google searching for a score of a game that's not being reported.

I’m sure the seniors were very emotional in beating THE rival and the #1 team. But, I think they have the same goal...... winning a state championship. Every game from here on out will be tough. Hart will prepare them well.

They'd better be ready. Shark's in the water.

Ben Davis, Warren Central, Center Grove, Carmel be like...
