I am not surprised at all. Mike took this job because he thought he could do something. He's brought the same drive and work ethic he had for years to Mount Vernon, and he's building a monster out there! I couldn't be happier for my friend and former colleague.

Furthermore, he, I think, has been reinvigorated by the challenge of building something. Mt. Vernon has been a solid program, but he's giving them more success than they've seen. It's a different challenge than what he had at BD.

    As we all do....

Just hope you show the exact same concern with driving a motor vehicle, influenza, heart disease prevention, alcohol consumption, eating habits, etc. as you do with Covid.

BTW, we've experienced COVID up close and personal in our family, so try not to insinuate I don't care...but living life is about balancing risk.  We do it from the very moment we leave our beds in the morning.

But I don't have to wear a mask and socially distance to improve my diet or hold off from drinking.

I agree. The kids I know who have gotten it all experienced minimal, short-lived symptoms. One kid told me he woke up with a sore throat then was completely fine the next day. Another kid told me he woke up with a stuffy nose and headache then was completely fine the next day. There are numerous things on a daily basis that pose a greater threat to kids than this virus.

But we don't know what the long term effects of the virus are. The virus never goes away. It never leaves the body. When you have chickenpox as a child, the virus stays in your body. Later, it can become shingles. We are essentially 9 or 10 months into this virus. Plus, the virus doesn't stop trying to achieve a new host just because it stays as a mild case.

Not belittling the situation at hand, but you do realize people died because they decided to get in a vehicle and drive and got hit by another vehicle or had a single accident fatality.  Are we supposed to just stop driving all of a sudden?

Nope. When viruses are vehicles, then your comparison will hold up.

I was NOT belittling the dangers of this virus.  Let me make that perfectly clear.  The crack about participation trophies was said in jest and with sarcasm towards the ISHAA.   In fact, my opinion was they should never have had a season until this thing got fixed and we get back to normal.  If that meant no season, so be it.  Better safe, than sorry.

Sorry. I guess I misunderstood your intention. Of course, that happens sometimes on message boards. I apologize.

It is also an apples and oranges comparison. The basketball tournament has multiple teams playing at the same site on the same nights, so crowds coming from multiple communities along with teams made it necessary to cancel. Plus, we knew very little at that time. We now know in football the steps necessary to minimize the impact as much as possible. Only one game a night and with smaller crowds outside is a lot different than neutral site gyms with multiple teams and multiple sets of fans.

Right, but the response was directly to itiswhatitis who seemed to belittle the decision, in my opinion, of the IHSAA to cancel the tournament. It trivialized, in my view, a very serious situation. I'm sure now where we are that different decisions would be made regarding fan attendance, etc. I would also assume the IHSAA would give every opportunity for the game to be played safely if possible.

They will probably cancel the rest of the tournament just like they did in basketball last spring.  Of course to make it "fair", they will give everyone a participation trophy and a juice box.

You realize people may have died because they attended a basketball Sectional, right?

With the win over Pike on Friday, the Giants claimed their 500th program victory. The program took from 1937-1975 to get to 100 wins, but the Giants have won 400 games in the last 45 years. Congratulations to the 16 head coaches in BD history and all the players, assistant coaches, managers, trainers and staff who have made this milestone possible.

Win #1 9/23/37 vs. Warren Central, 32-9 (Played at George Washington H.S.)

    #100 8/29/75 at Pike, 15-14

#200 9/22/89 vs. Terre Haute South at the Hoosier Dome, 47-7

    #300 10/23/98 vs. Indy Northwest, 38-20 (Sectional)

    #400 10/19/07 vs. Brownsburg, 35-13 (Sectional)

    #500 9/4/20 at Pike, 48-24

Another interesting factoid, BD is now 35-12 vs. Pike, but the Giants are 19-3 at Pike.

So, if you are nerding out and wanting some more Ben Davis Football History...

The Giants are 500-369-12 all time. Since 1973, BD has won 72 percent of its games (404-137-0). Since 1984, BD has won 76.8 percent of its games (345-104-0).

The Giants are 117-45 all time in the MIC with 11 Championships (7 outright, 4 shared).

    BD has won 23 Sectionals, 18 Regionals, 11 Semi-States, and 9 State Championships (7 5A, 2 6A).
As far as coaching wins go...
    Dick Dullaghan has 213 wins
    Mike Kirschner won 95 games
Bob Wilbur is third all-time with 59 wins.
Lou Parnell is fourth with 31 wins.
Tom Allen rounds out the top five with 25 wins.
    Other Coaches:
    Bill McClain 19
    Red Haviland 15
    Jason Simmons 12
    John Masariu 11
    Ralph Crock 7
    Bob Britt 6
    Woody Baker 4
    Trent Gipson, Sr. 2
    Chuck Stuckey 1
    Leo Lentz 0

And Bob Otolski is a head coach who never coached a single game. He was hired in 1973 in January, but he was offered an assistant coaching position at IU with Lee Corso. He left without coaching a game. The Giants hired Bob Wilbur instead. That worked out ok!

Thanks to Jim Pich for helping me research all of this.

The Warriors are by far the worst team in the MIC. Not gonna lie.

Hmm...I don't know about that. They've played two of the best teams in the state so far. I think they're better than at least Pike and LC. I guess we'll find out as the year continues. I think the Warriors (and BD) are works in progress.

Warren Central vs Covenant Christian -  In the second game of a Saturday afternoon double header following the LN-Tindley battle, Covenant comes from behind with a furios 28 point fourth quarter rally and upsets the WC Warriors 42 38.  The CC fans storm the field at Tech High School and tear down the goal posts, destroy the press box and spray paint the CC Warrior logo at the 50 yard line.  Police are called and multiple arrests are made.

I chuckled at this post a lot. Though...Covenant doesn't play at Tech, I believe they play at Zionsville.

Are schools up in Indy operating virtually or in-person?? I thought I remembered reading somewhere awhile back that all IPS schools were going to go virtual until like October?? Is that the case, and if so, does that include Warren and Ben Davis?? And aren't they playing football games?? Any other schools around the State operating as virtual, but still playing games?

I'm hoping with the new CDC guidelines that we will be brought back to normal here real soon...

Ben Davis is open in a hybrid schedule. Students A-K attend Monday/Tuesday, L-Z attend Thursday/Friday. They are virtual the days they are not in person. There are also several students on all virtual called Wayne @ Home. Warren and BD are in different school districts.

I'm glad Marion County Department of Public Health decided to open schools this way. It plainly was not safe to open up all in person. We've seen other area schools try that and then have to switch to hybrid or virtual.
