You're really a piece of work. Go through Big Ten rosters and just count the number of BD and Warren players making contributions. That's just the Big Ten.

    Otomewo at Minnesota

    Ball at Purdue

    Evans going back to Michigan

    Taylor at Indiana

Bilal was heavily recruited at Northwestern before heading to ND

But also in D1 Broc Thompson at Marshall

It's late and I'm struggling to remember everyone. I'm sure I'm missing someone.

You don’t get it.  The normal, every day student who does not take part in anything extracurricular couldn’t care less about FOOTBALL, save for a few exceptions.

In a school that large, many of the kids simply slip through the cracks.  It’s human nature.

The “Purple Reign” student section should be referred to as the “Purple Sprinkle” because it is usually sparse at best.  Even some of your football players were taking to Twitter over the past two years that their fan support was atrocious.

And before you accuse me of not knowing what I’m talking about, I can assure you that I’m close enough to the situation.  As close as you?  Nope.  But close nonetheless.

    Actually, it's Purple Rain.

I'm not disputing that fan support has been a problem. Several comments ago, I acknowledged that this is not a new issue.

My point was only that Coach Simmons and Coach Kirschner before him have encouraged their players to go support other sports. That's all. Calm down.

Doesn't help that there is no "small town feel" at the mega schools either.

Students get connected to their activities here. If you don't believe there's a family at BD, come look at our performing arts and how much those kids feel a part of something. Come look at some of the Area 31 Career programs where kids feel connected. At BD you have to get connected so something, and there's a ton of things to get connected to in Giantland. May not be your idea of "small town feel" but it's definitely something like it. It may not be showing in the stands, but it shows in the hallways.

Also, I have to say Coach Simmons does a great job encouraging his young men to go support other programs. Fall sport student sections were dominated by football players. The Basketball coaching staff also does a great job with this.

Instead of talking about an extremely well-played football game between rivals, we're talking about attendance.... but whatever helps you all sleep at night.

I'm more interested in talking about the actual game played on the field on a FOOTBALL website but I digress. Kudos to CG's defense and their absolute wrecking-crew of a DL last Friday night, but Ben Davis was just as equally physical and making big plays defensively.

    Here Here!

I thought the Giants gave a good account of themselves on Friday night. Center Grove's youngster made two big plays on defense. Knocking the pass away from Nolen when he was on his way for six and forcing the Hassel fumble. Just a couple plays different and we're talking a tie game and who knows what happens after that. It was a physical football game. Too many flags also didn't help the Giants.

Curious to hear your opinion about what it is then because I know places like Warren even sometimes provides a fan bus, and it makes little difference.

I wish I could explain it. BD shows for certain games and will line 10th Street and buy tons of tickets when the team makes a state run, but it's difficult to get our fans out before then. I remember in the 2000 Semi-State Center Grove had probably more fans than we did at home (frigid night and snowing). It kind of is what it is at this point.

That is an easy way out.  BD has a massive football program.  A significant number of players continue playing after high school.  So I have to guess you are thinking of other programs outside of Wayne Township.

    1) Does BD lose a number of really good players to jobs?  If not BD, do you feel that is pretty common to the point programs are significantly impacted?  I'm not disagreeing...would be good to share specific examples.

    2) Clinics and camps....this one I can see...although I have personally seen a number of BD players visible at camps over the years.  Especially those on the recruiting trail.  I don't disagree with Grover that camps are questionable about how much skill is developed when compared to their own program development.  (what value do they really bring other than to be seen by folks at the next level)

    3) BD has had outstanding coaches over the years...I mean outstanding...and most of the head coaches remained around for awhile.  I can see where other smaller programs/budgets might have difficulty in retaining coaches.  I can also see this in rural areas or any program that is not considered elite.

    4) Won't disagree about impact of stable families and food to eat.  (including quality food)  How much does quality nutrition play vs. God given talent, hard work, etc.??  That's an interesting question.  Obviously all are desired.

    5) BD has incredible facilities....so again, I have to assume you are referencing schools outside of Wayne Township.

If you wish to pile on and add little value in this case, that's your call.  But to say Grover is out of touch is flat out wrong.  His involvement with football has taken him all over this state and beyond.  And not just to certain areas.  Your comment felt like a stereotype.

    1) I don't have the stats, but I do know that this community has a large number of students who must work to support the family. Some students are being raised by grandparent/s or a disabled single parent. It's a bigger factor than you know. Another problem is reliable transportation. It's about a half mile walk or so to the nearest bus line, and those buses run at weird times. They are done running late at night on the Westside. Our students are, in general, relying on others to transport them to and from school.

    2) They cost money. Many of our families don't have that money to go around. Fundraising is important.

    3) True. You go from Bob Wilbur to Dick Dullaghan to Tom Allen to Mike Kirschner to Jason Simmons, that's a pretty good run. I would say that it's getting harder to retain assistant coaches for obvious reasons...don't want to get political, but there's a teacher shortage for a reason.

    4) See #1. I remember one of our coaches a few years back describing that they had a player living out of his car.

    5) We do have a great stadium, and the district does a great job with the facilities, but it's hard for some of our families to come up with the necessary funds for practice packs and transportation fees, etc. Fundraising is necessary here adding another layer to the coach job description.

I apologize to @Grover for my flippant comment. It was not reflective of how I try to conduct myself on this board. I apologize.

Mike Gillin could win an HCC title at Noblesville within 3 years of taking the job.   Would be a nice way to cap off a stellar career.

Agree he'd be a great hire. It would be interesting to see what he could do with the Millers program. He's won everywhere he's been.

This isn't week 4 BD, just as it isn't week 4 CG.

Very true. BD can't put the ball on the ground and make the mistakes they made vs. Zionsville this week. Won't work.

This game will be a war.....regular seasons go right out the window....was really impressed with BD's QB last time....DL will have to rush, yet contain.

Have so much respect for BD's program....remember the Dullaghan days when CG used to try to get over the hump against his teams.  What a dynasty.

Do you remember the classic 4-3 game when BD nipped CG with 2 safeties??  Been some excellent games over the years!!

Yes, I remember that 4-3 game. BD had a long run called back due to a hold. What an awful win...if there is such a thing. Same year BD got toasted at Warren. BD had a 76-7 loss and a 4-3 win on the docket that year as well as a loss to Terre Haute North and a shutout win over Penn. What an up and down year.

I really am impressed with the job that Jason has done this year. I have to admit that I didn't know where BD was headed at 1-3 coming off a 3-7 year last year, but it's been a fun experience seeing this group buy what Coach Simmons is selling.

    1.  Possibly.  I'd be curious to hear how many schools lose good players to jobs.

    2.  Okay.  Most camps and clinics are BS but there are benefits to be had in the right programs.

    3.  Maybe.  I have heard there are other MIC schools in lower socioeconomic areas that have coaches who don't have to teach.  That's not the case at CG.

    4.  Granted, but I'm not sure that is high on the list of attributes college recruiters are seeking.

    5.  That's a silly comment.  I granted the better facilities and equipment in my post that you quoted.

    You're really out of touch.
