Culture is important but PLAYERS and the right atmosphere/environment matters.

Look at Noblesville.  More specifically, look at Noblesville’s SES profile compared to the teams they face in their conference/county.

Its been a burial ground for great coaches.  Schieb could not win there after a successful run at FC.  Rosen could not win there after a successful run at East Central.  Your boy Jason Simmons seems to be finding his way at BD, but couldn’t win at Noblesville.  They all had (have in Simmons’ case) built a culture and had great leadership elsewhere so why didn’t things work out at Noblesville?

I've not talked in depth about it with Coach Simmons.

No doubt and while I agree, you can only do so much with the hand you are dealt.

Ill go ahead and ask it as I do not fear offending folks.  Drop Kyle Ralph or Eric Moore in at Perry Meridian or Arsenal Tech tomorrow; how’s that working out?

Well, Kevin Wright took a serious look at Tech supposedly once upon a time. I believe that's when Dr. White was going to make Tech the only football program in IPS if I remember correctly. I think Coach Moore would win any where he goes. It might take him a while. The kids would gravitate to him. Perry hasn't always been a doormat. While that program has struggled in recent history, Craig Barr had some good years, and the program had some very solid seasons in the 1970's and 80's under Steve Purichia and others.

We're kind of seeing what happens when a great coach goes in there on the basketball side. Mark James took BD's boys basketball program and turned them from bad to mediocre into state champs in six years. Perry is moving in a positive direction right now with him down there.

To answer your question, I think they would struggle early, but I think they also know how to build programs...especially in Moore's case.

  3. BD has the two I always wanted to see get on the schedule with Avon and Brownsburg. I miss the old Westside rivalry with Decatur Central, but that's probably done.

I'll go with St. Xavier because I don't think BD gave a very good account of itself in Cincinnati the last time around and Penn because I miss that old BD/Penn rivalry game.

Speaking on next year, I would love to see some of the Lafayette schools play bigger opponents. West Lafayette vs a lower tier HCC school like Franklin Central or Noblesville would be a good matchup. Lafayette Jeff vs a “rebuilding” (using that term cautiously) New Pal would be very interesting. WL Harrison vs a school like Gibson Southern or Brebeuf would be a great challenge for them.

If Jeff has a week 2 opening, so does Carmel.

I think everyone really agrees there is no easy answer because that is the problem.  You have a very small number of schools that are MUCH larger than everyone else.  You could argue its really a SUPER 2 (Carmel - 5300, BD 4500), The NEXT 2 (WC - 3800, NC 3700), and then from Fishers on down everyone is withing about 100 kids of the next school.  I think in a perfect world you would never classify schools together if one is twice the size of another but its hard to draw that line in Indiana unless you just put BD and Carmel in their own class.  Those 2 are the real outliers, and I don't have an answer for it.

If you feel its unfair for 2055 Zville to be in the same classification as 5300 Carmel...you're probably right.

If you feel that other factors (outside of enrollment) contribute to success...you're probably right.

If you feel there isn't a workable solution when its really 2 (or 3...or 4) schools that are the real outliers....you're probably right.

Here's what we should do. We should divide the number of schools into 16 classes in 6A and award 16 different trophies. BD/Carmel would play a single playoff game. Winner gets a trophy and so on.

Winning half your sectionals isn't being dominant....(honest question)?  Keep in mind on a few occasions they were in the same sectional as WC.  I'd bet many of the other losses were to Avon or Pike...both schools over 3000.

    2005-Decatur

    2006-Won Sectional

    2007-Pike

    2008-Won Sectional

    2009-Avon

    2010-Pike

    2011-Won Sectional

    2012-Pike

    2013-Pike

    2014-Won Sectional

    2015-Avon

    2016-Won Sectional

    2017-Won Sectional

    2018-Warren

    2019-Won Sectional

  6. People define decades differently, but Ben Davis Football finished the 2010-2019 period at 84-35 with 3 MIC, 5 Sectional, 4 Regional, 2 Semi-State, and 2 State Championships. Historically, this decade trails the 90's (115) and the 00's (97) in wins. It's third as well in winning percentage behind the 90's (.885) and the 00's (.752). Since 1980, the Giants are 352-124 (.739). Program wise, the Giants are 499-367-12 (.576). Next win will put BD at 500.

Thank you to Jim Pich for helping me get to these numbers. By the way, this win total includes a 1997 forfeit win over North Central (that John Harrell doesn't recognize).

On a separate note, does anybody know about the “controversy” of the semi-state between CG and BD? I’ve seen stuff on Twitter from some BD guys saying that they should’ve been in the state game. Gipson (BD QB) tweeted at a CG student account saying that everybody besides CG knew what happened. They were saying that they were getting cheated, so I was curious to see if this is made up or not.

BD still had its chances. Ultimately CG made the plays and won. Not a knock on Trent. He had a great year...as did the Giants. Proud of them. It was an emotional end to the year.

Dude, it’s on the main part of Wikipedia.  I don’t need to make anything up.  I was an employee in a MIC school when the conference was formed and part of an oversight committee to determine if this was the right fit.

I literally interviewed Bob Britt who made some of the initial calls. BD and the other independents were having trouble filling football schedules. That started the MIC.

Since it’s officially off-topic season I thought I’d generate some discussion.  I see this topic tossed about frequently at the collegiate level so I figured I’d pose it to the board.

Say you are a young grad with coaching experience and opportunity comes knocking.

What FIVE coaching gigs in Indiana would most excite you were the phone to ring?  If you are looking to build/maintain a powerhouse program that competes for state titles immediately/annually.

Furthermore, what job/job(s) out there that might not appear in the above category immediately would qualify as a “sleeping giants” and excite you most over the next 5-10 years?

    Why?

    Have at it.

I mean, I think three are obvious. BD, Carmel, and Warren. Coach Moore has made Center Grove a great job. I think LCC, Cathedral and Chatard would be a tie for 5.

    Sleeping Giants:

I think you've all hit the big ones. I'd watch out for Pike.
