    The Manual requires that, for varsity games, the back judge and at least one other official on the crew “shall have a device capable of keeping the game and play clocks on the field if necessary.”

    The most important thing is to join a local officials association and be active. Incidentally, new this year, if you do not belong to a local official’s association, you cannot work the tournament.

    Need a little more information. You say the teams fouled “after the kick has ended.” Was the ball still alive when the fouls were committed, or were these dead ball fouls? And what were the fouls each team committed?

    The back judge uses a beanbag to mark the spot where the kick ends. This is usually a contrasting color bag, not the usual blue most crews use. A beanbag is also used to mark the spot of first touching. When during the game did this play occur? I’ll look at the Hudl video.

    I’ll bet you $100 it was explained to both sidelines at the time. The crew is equipped with radios. I’m sure the R explained it to the wing officials, who explained it on their respective sidelines. If a team doesn’t like the explanation, and wants to burn a timeout to discuss it further, that’s on them.

    If you’re talking about the kick that was muffed, and subsequently awarded to the kicking team, you’re incorrect. The kick was touched first by the receivers, not the kickers, so there was no “first touching.” The call on the field was correct. It was not. The ball was touched first by the receiving team. The call was correct.

    The position of the ball is everything. If it breaks the plane of the goal line, it’s a touchback.

    “Hurdling is an attempt by a player to jump (hurdle) with one or both feet or knees foremost over an opponent who is contacting the ground with no part of his body except one or both feet.” Hurdling is a foul in the high school code. Has been for a long time.

    As described, there’s no fumble, since the receivers never had possession. It’s a “muff.” The result is the same, though. The kickers’ touching constitutes “first touching.” This entitles the receivers to choose to put the ball in play at the spot of first touching, or accept the result of the play. That’s provided there are no fouls during the play. If there are, it can get pretty complicated.

    Kudos to Linton-Stockton for upgrading their schedule by playing Marion Local - Maria Stein, the 3 time defending Ohio small school champs, and winners of 48 straight games, the nation’s longest winning streak. The champs showed why they are favored to “four peat.” Marion Local 45 - Linton Stockton 6. It was 45-0 early in the 3rd.

    I knew Linton would be game … but I suspected this would be the outcome. Marion Local showed why they came into this game with a 48 game winning streak - longest in the nation - and were 3 time defending state champs in Ohio. 42-0 at halftime. Final 45-6.

    I believe the idea is that replacing the Guardian cap involves more than simply tugging a sleeve over an exposed pad. But to be honest, I wouldn’t know. I have no experience with Guardian caps.

    The official interpretation is “no.” So, if the cap comes off the runner, the ball remains alive. If it comes off another player, he can continue to participate without penalty. Think of it more like a towel, i.e., a legal accessory. If a player loses a cap, however, he has to come out to re-apply it. Or, he can play without.

    The B1G people are mostly of the impression that they will be able to push Oregon around on the line of scrimmage. This should be very interesting.
