I think that depends. If the coach calls a timeout to talk to the Referee and says “Look at this play, you guys were wrong,” just tell him “I can’t look at that, put it away.” Problem solved. Now, if it goes beyond that, then you start thinking about using the flag. But certainly not as a first resort. Calling an unsportsmanlike conduct foul on a coach has significant repercussions. Not to be done lightly.

Or on the try, at the option of the offended team.

What level of play? If it’s played under high school rules, this is an unsportsmanlike conduct foul against A. Because USC is always enforced as if it were a dead ball foul, the TD counts. The defense gets to choose whether the 15 yd. penalty is assessed on the try, or the subsequent kickoff.

Some of you may have known James, a B1G replay official who had a long and distinguished career officiating high school football in Indiana. A great friend and a mentor to many, many officials. He passed away unexpectedly yesterday just before the Michigan game he was supposed to work. Fair winds and following seas, James.

A note about the missed call on the punt play, perhaps. But this, almost certainly not. For one thing, that would mean someone at the IHSAA who knows Officiating would have to watch the entire game video. Not going to happen.

Here’s part of a Facebook post I saw this morning: “Flag for targeting. [Home team] Player ejected. Penalty 15 yards from the end of the play. 1st down. Play ran for a gain of 3 yards. White hat called to the [home team] side line. Head coach shows official an iPad with film. They watch the film and white hat has conference with team. Walks to the middle of the field and radios the press box that he is waving off the penalty for targeting and no personal foul. Player is allowed to return to the game.” In case there’s any question, it is absolutely forbidden for the officials to use any form of reply under any circumstances. I’m pretty sure the R on this game is going to be getting a call from the IHSAA today … and it won’t be pleasant.

The Umpire is required to have a gauge for measuring the pressure in the footballs. The ball is required to have a psi between 12.5 and 13.5. If a coach hands the ball to the U and it’s 12.5 psi, it’s legal. Maybe the coach’s gauge and the U’s gauge were in disagreement. But the U should not be adding or releasing air if the football is already in the legal range.

It is somewhat unusual these days to see twin safeties on a punt return, but it does happen. Our Manual does not address B positioning in the event there are twins back there. But I suspect it will next year. 😉 As the IFOA Training Video #1 that was distributed this morning says, the better practice in the event of twin safeties is for the B to split them. Once the ball is in the air, adjust your position to have an angle. Don’t allow yourself to get straightlined by the returner catching the ball.

My first time at Linton, and I was very impressed with their program and the people I met. Very nice facility, too.

That would create a double foul, requiring replay of the down, and the replayed 4th down would be an untimed extension of the period.

What kind of publicity do they deserve? Should their names and home addresses be published? Perhaps they should have to write a letter of apology “to whom it may concern.” Man, you think it’s hard to get sufficient numbers of officials now. SMH

That’s not why meeting attendance is important. At your stage, I think association meetings are more important than working a middle school game with one other official. Learn the right way first, rather than having to later unlearn bad habits you might pick up working such games without at least one experienced official who can “mentor” you during the game.

I spoke with the crew chief, so yes, that’s what B thought. There was no misapplication of the rule. It was an error in judgment.

Then you should join one of those other associations.

Don’t know if it was the case here, but I just want to point out that there are times when something that’s “this easily seen” on TV or video stream is not so easy to see on the field. It’s all about angles. A sideline camera shows a much different angle on this type of play than the back judge has. These officials have already seen the game video. I can assure you that they have already addressed the question of how, from a mechanics viewpoint, they can get a better look at plays like this in the future. And there’s not going to be any reprimand or other discipline. Nor should there be.

Lakewood St. Edward brushed aside a pretty good Pickerington North team, on the road, 28-0. But this Saturday will be a real test, as the Eagles host National #15 St. Joseph’s Prep from Philadelphia.

This was the first game for Highland’s Ben Geffen as head coach. He was a former head coach and All State player … at Griffith. Wonder if that had anything to do with the score.
