Jeffersonville and New Albany are both a clown show. New Albany ran out a Hall of Fame coach like Jim Shannon. Hired a guy from Jay County. Their AD ran him out this summer. Then they hired a guy from Kansas who won 2 games last year. In basketball.  And I like Steve Cooley, he's a pretty good guy. But he's not really getting it done either.

Jim Shannon got ran off? I just thought he retired because he was getting older.

  2. 2005 had a couple big ones. As @Tippy mentioned, Lowell going into the tournament at 5-4 and knocking off Roncalli in the 4A state title game was a big upset.

However, you also had a NorthWood team that entered the tournament at 3-6. They knocked off an undefeated Griffith team led by Russ Radtke at semi-state 17-10 before defeating Chatard 7-0 for the 3A state title. Four of their six tournament wins were by a touchdown. Their final record of 9-6 is still the worst ever by a state champion

  3. This is the game I’ve been looking forward to the most this postseason. As a Columbus East guy, I’ve actually been looking forward to this for awhile. East Central was our big postseason rival for years when we were in the same sectional with them in 4A. New Palestine was our big postseason rival the four consecutive years we played them from 2013-2016. Both programs are class programs and ones I’ve always had the utmost respect for. Because of this, I’ve always wanted to see them play each other but things like the success factor or not having good teams at the same time kept getting in the way. Now we’re finally getting it for (I believe) the first time ever. And it’s thankfully happening right before East Central moves up to 5A next year. Best of luck to both schools.

    That happened.

During my daughter’s HS days, must have been her junior year, because Gilbert had already moved on. Jeff girls show up to the sectional with 13 players dressed. Mickey Beck had to go tell the coach they could only have 12. Then he had to tell one kid to go sit behind the bench, she couldn’t warm up, because I guess for some reason the coach couldn’t.
Just another example of what a Mickey Mouse organization Jeff athletics is. I worked there twice and swore I’d never go back. Hated even going there.

    Unreal

We were riding in there one afternoon on the bus and there was a dumpster fire behind the school in what appeared to be an industrial arts area. I have a picture on my phone somewhere, kinda sums up Jeff athletics.

The boys basketball team should be really good according to one of the Jennings County assistants I talked to.

7-1. They rolled every team except for Floyd Central who beat them 38-20. You all have heard me talk about that team. They haven't lost a game since 3rd grade. From what my people are telling me, it's a generational class. Our 7th and 8th grade teams didn't lose a game this season either. We have a lot of Coach Wiegleb players who are involved in the feeder and youth coaching and their kids are coming. Some pretty big ass kids too.

7-1 or 8-0 doesn’t really matter. Still solid and, combined with a good 8th grade class, that’s promising for us East fans who have seen bad football the last three years. I’m not expecting the East teams Gaddis coached, but it would be nice to have a winning record again.

How about these 4 regional match ups in 1A... Every single one is a rematch from last year's regional games! 8 solid programs 2 years in a row, pretty good!

Would love to see some different results but I think Lutheran and AC might just be too good for 1A, pretty sure at least one of them go to 2A next year...

Lutheran moves to 2A with a regional championship this Friday. Adams Central could also move to 2A if they advance to state.

I take a lot of heat on here at times. A lot of it, I'm sure was deserved. But this is honestly a pretty good football thread. A lot of people in this thread give a **** about this conference. I hope that it continues to improve. I'm not sure what the conference will look like considering the really good players leaving FC, Seymour, and BNL but it'll be interesting. It'll be interesting to see what happens at Jeffersonville after a 0-fer season. Some other programs that are struggling, will they make any changes? Obviously a lot to digest before next season.

Supposedly Columbus East has really good freshman and 8th grade classes. We’ll see how that translates at the varsity level in 2-3 years. Considering the success both have had, it’ll reflect poorly on coaching if Vogel isn’t able to do anything with them.

This was fun.  I got started late and missed a couple in the middle but it was still a good time.  The HHC Group is a super active thread.  Until next year!

We may stink at football but I’d argue we’re more passionate about our teams than the fans of teams from other conferences that you only see on this site because they’re winning. Maybe I’m biased though.

    I stand corrected.
I still like my chances at trivia night.

This was always one of my favorite scenes so I thought of it immediately. I had a co-worker named Judy and she always got confused when I would say “Judy, Judy, Judy, Judy, Judy” in the Goober voice.

There isn’t a situation that comes up in life that isn’t covered by an episode of TAGS.

Oh I’m definitely not knocking the show. I was raised on it because it was and still is my dad’s favorite show. Well, at least until Don Knotts leaves. He doesn’t acknowledge those later seasons.

Contingency? IHSAA? Make all finals broadcast only via streaming so rural dwellers especially can be more engaged, furthering the sports through their communities.

I’m a rural dweller and I would agree with you. Luckily, though, we were able to eventually find a better internet option two years ago. It’s a little unorthodox but it has been a godsend.

As for other folks that don’t have this option, I feel their pain. I miss the old days when channel 4 used to air things like this. If My Network TV channel 23 can air a weekly game of the week then why can’t they air the state title games? I love watching Andy Griffith reruns as much as anyone over 50 does but we can all go two days without watching Barney sing to Juanita over the phone for the 48th time.

  14. This Friday, for the first time in my life, I’ll be attending a high school football game that doesn’t involve Columbus East or Jennings County. My brother-in-law took his first coaching gig last year as an assistant with Fishers and he’s in his second year there now. He’s been wanting me and my wife to come watch one of their games for the last two years but we hadn’t been able to do so until now. We’ll be heading up to Hamilton Southeastern to hopefully see Fishers win the sectional. HSE beat them in OT after converting a two-point conversion in week 4. HSE has won five straight in the rivalry so I hope I’m able to bring Fishers some luck on Friday. Go Tigers!

That’s way above my pay grade. I’d prefer to concentrate on curing the problem long term, and let others figure out the mechanics of dealing with the current crisis.

I get that but have you heard any ideas floated around? You don’t have to tell me what they are. I would hope the IHSAA is being proactive and trying to plan for a worst-case scenario.

Contingency plans are above my pay grade. However it’s not hard to see education based sports go away. We already see kids skipping HS sports for club sports. Football was always the anomaly in that equation but we’re starting to see a fair amount of club football, which in my opinion is not conducive to the health of the game or the health of the players playing the game. Go run track or play baseball in the spring. Athletes should be athleting.

I’m with you there. I absolutely detest club sports, especially AAU basketball.

My sister played soccer. She played youth league in Columbus and got so good that people convinced her and my parents that she should play for the club team when she got old enough. So she went from six games in the fall and six games in the spring to about 10-15 games each. Then that wasn’t enough so they brainwashed her into thinking she wouldn’t be able to keep up with the rest of the girls in soccer if she didn’t do indoor soccer in the winter. It was never-ending.

She was getting bored with being overloaded with soccer so she did basketball for a couple years. Then she got into high school and did track in the spring. She wanted soccer to just be a fall sport while she was at East but there was pressure coming to her from coaches and teammates about how that wasn’t enough.

Nevertheless, she got “recruited” and played at Franklin College her freshman year. However, recurring injuries coupled with soccer overload all her child life had her completely burnt out and she quit after one year.

I was a pretty good soccer player myself but I also liked having an off-season to pursue other interests. I was urged to play club soccer as well but I had seen what it did to my sister and my parents. They were all burnt out from being gone every weekend.

It’s a shame to hear football is going down that path now. I didn’t even think that was possible.
