Holding an offense that averages over 30 points per game to 10 could only be achieved by some sort of cheating.

Yeah, I thought the offenses mostly looked clunky, although Michigan really leaned on them on that last scoring drive. The Alabama offense looked in disarray, but I thought the defense mostly acquitted itself. Michigan's defense is the story of the game.

A real nice result for the maize and blue going into next year.

Best 8-5 season in college football history, lol.

So, IU beat Michigan, and Michigan beats Alabama.  So, I watched Finebaum today for a bit to see what his excuse will be for the 'Bama loss, as he kept telling us that Alabama belonged in the CFP ahead of the Hoosiers.  He was mighty quiet today after the game, but I'm sure he'll spin things sometime soon.

IU's stock continues to rise. Although I've been critical of Sagarin's flaws, his ranking of IU at #9 is starting to look pretty accurate.

I’ve got one foot on board with your Cignetti/DeBoer argument after what I witnessed yesterday.

Maybe too much of a culture change in one season? If it's not broke, don't fix it. Easiser said than done though. It's not like the new coach is going to do it the old coach's way.........unless that coach brought him up as an assistant.

Everyone expected IU to beat Michigan handily. No one knew at that point that Michigan was a far different team than they were at the beginning of the season. IU winning a close game agaisnt Michigan was less than impressive. Then OSU and Bama go down. IU's stock does continue to rise............about as much as it can in a season that is over for them.

Eh, I mean taking over for a legend is never easy and usually ends up in failure.  Bama fans are also pretty damn spoiled.

Yesterday’s result shocked me.  Michigan sat 10 starters and could once again not complete a forward pass to save their lives.  The grinded it out and controlled the tempo.

These bowl games don’t tell the whole story as motivation levels, opt outs, etc are variables that affect the result.  Last year when UGA missed the playoff, they were on a mission to prove they belonged and poor Florida State was the sacrificial lamb.  That’s what I expected from Bama yesterday.

I get that these meaningless games don't tell the whole story. But teams like Alabama and Michigan have depth. And if that depth doesn't provide, then that says something for the as a whole. I honestly think Michigan still wins that game if both teams were at full strength. You're the Michigan, guy, tell me this team isn't MUCH improved from the beginning of the season. Hell, I'm thinking that if the season started over right now, Michigan might be a playoff team.

Eh, not sure I would go that far.  Motivation just cannot be measured when predicting non CFP bowl games.

Michigan has depth but not Bama/UGA/OSU depth.  That’s why yesterday’s result was so shocking to me.

Michigan was much improved on the defensive side of the ball but their offense was putrid.

I was waiting for someone to actually add some truth serum to the bowl year

Hey its Football

Its entertaining

BUT.......

in its current landscape of JV NFL, hard to actually quantify wins or losses in these game as anything other than, hey my team Won or Loss an exhibition game for a trophy paid for by a sponsor

While I have long thought the current path was not sustainable....this will likely accelerate things. Ohio State reports a deficit, and now IU reports it sent money to the football program. I am guessing a LOT of programs are in the same boat.

Is this like Navy bailing out Notre Dame?  Or the other way around?

I worded it incorrectly. the University sent that money to its own program.

Purdue was in the black again

Unfortunately now, that is reflected on the field. Gonna take a boatload of cash to compete.

They were in the Black every year Coach Jeff Brohm was there, taking them to multiple bowl games and a B10 Championship game, just in 2022.

Coaching Matters

I agree coaching matters, but Brohm was pre wild West for college football with NIL at the level it is now and the transfer portal where it is now. Not taking anything away from Brohm, he is a great coach.

correct. but my comment was to say Purdue was only in the Black because they weren't paying players last 2 years, they were and they were in the black prior.

my point is they have operated fiscally responsbile as a self funded department

I'm guessing most athletics departments are still operating closer to or at the margin––with some notable exceptions in the Big Ten and SEC. IU stepped on a landmine with the Allen contract, and then had to cover Cignetti's buyout, too. Ohio State reports nearly $10 million in severance payments for that year, plus they lost two home football games from '22 to '23. For years, Notre Dame's bean counters could reliably predict future deficits based on the opponents on the home football schedule alone.

But no athletic department is in the red from paying players either, yet.
