You know what I noticed?? Game is being played in an absolute downpour - yet the student-athletes are still able to keep their footing and play a game that somewhat resembles football.

Now imagine that game - a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP level game - being played in that same downpour on a grass field and ask yourself if that play even happens??

People that continue to want Championship level games (sectional, regional, semi-state) to be played on grass because "that's the way it is supposed to be" make about enough sense to me as the people who say "cause that's the way we've always done it" (i.e. worse argument of all time)

I would think a downfield player handing the ball, or in this case a teammate taking it away, would have to be one of the more difficult plays to officiate.

A couple of questions for the officials out there. The ball can be handed parallel to a teammate just not forward, correct?  And the determining factor is the movement of the ball, not the orientation of the players.

I can imagine that game, it would be much better.    And it would be safer.

I believe what you are looking for is the "butterfly effect". You could play on a completely different turf field and that play would probably never happen due to alterations in the timeline having a ripple effect on the events that follow. So in a way you saying that this game would have had the same outcome on any turf field and not the one they played at isn't the greatest argument either lol.

The ball cannot be handed forward, except in or behind the neutral zone.

Right from the rulebook:

ART. 2 . . . Forward handing occurs when the runner releases the ball when the entire ball is beyond the yard line where the runner is positioned.

ART. 3 . . . Backward handing occurs when the runner releases the ball when any part of the ball is on or behind the yard line where the runner is positioned.

Just keep cherry picking.  How do you discount this?:

Quote

...

When combining injuries for the 2021 and 2022 seasons (N = 718 injuries), the incidence rate of lower extremity injury was 1.22 injuries/game for natural grass and 1.42 injuries/game for artificial turf. The odds of a season-ending surgery were found to be significantly higher on artificial turf compared with natural grass (odds ratio = 1.60; 95% CI, 1.28-1.99; P < .05), while additional variables, including weather, age, position, week of injury occurrence, and history of prior injury, did not influence the odds of season-ending surgery.

Conclusion:

The 2021 and 2022 NFL seasons of our analysis demonstrated a higher incidence rate of injuries on artificial turf surfaces compared with natural grass surfaces. In addition, the odds of injury requiring season-ending surgery were found to be significantly higher on artificial turf compared with natural grass.

...

Why don't you come out and say it Jets? You hate any sort of random variable, like the vagary's of a non-artificial playing surface.  You want the playing conditions for every high school game to be planned and controlled to the highest degree possible.

I will admit full heartedly that in Championship level games - yes - I would like to see the better team (that night) determine who is the winner - and not things like a muddy field. Some variables can't be helped - but this one could and in my opinion - should.

As far as the published study - you can twist statistics anyway you want....we just had 3 real life examples - but you choose to ignore those.

Not trying to be a jerk here, just want to hear your opinion. Would you have a problem with grass if it was inside of a controlled environment? Like lets say the Colts decide to put grass inside of Lucas Oil, would you have a problem with it then or would you still want it to be turf?

Life is hard, and full of surprises. And frankly it sucks sometimes.   Like muddy football uniforms.  What are we teaching our children about overcoming unseen adversity if every contest we schedule for them has practically the same game time parameters?

A statistical anomaly, nothing more. And you rail about twisting statistics........................

Fair question - and no - I don't have any "deep-seeded" (see what I did there?) issue against grass lol. Have it in my yard...heck I've spent time working at a golf course on the grounds crew. I've said it a million times - I just don't think championship level games should be played in muddy slop-fest of a field when again - it CAN be avoided.

I don't remember the years- but I know there have been postseason games MOVED because both teams agreed ....(think it was Monrovia and somebody that comes to mind?)and those teams wanted to know who was the better team (that night) and not have the game affected by field conditions.

See I'm in agreeance there. I like a nice cut grass field over a turf field any day. But I also like it sunny and 60 degrees when I'm playing on it. It's the elements that I would agree at a championship level game I would not like to see impact the game as much. I also agree with Muda and it is apart of the game sometimes whether we like it to be or not. Have to adapt and find ways to win and i think the better prepared and better coached teams win those games more times than not. I'm sure there are plenty of times when they don't but I'm sure the same can be said for those perfect condition games as well, probably just not statistically as much as the ones affected by the elements.
