Something like 30 States now have legalized gambling on sports. Calvin Ridley spends $1500 to bet on NFL games. He apparently bet on 3, 5, and 8 game parlays; and none of them included his team; the Falcons. he was suspended for the ENTIRE season next season. For a total of 16 games on FanDuel, while he did not have a direct impact, the odds are he knows guys on the other teams. Anyone associated with a team simply CANNOT gamble on the sport. There are WAY too many issues. We are already seeing a negative impact in my mind that fantasy leagues are having. So, if the NFL were to show any semblance of being fair, I would be ok with the punishment.
That said, here are some things to consider:
Roger Goodell watched a video of Ray Rice knocking his gf out cold and initially suspended him 2 games

Adrian Peterson: felony child abuse; 6 games

Greg Hardy: beating gf; 10 games reduced to 4 Ezekiel Elliot: hitting women; 6 games

Calvin Ridley: 17 games for using FanDuel

I get that the other stuff does not deal directly with game play, but the punishment for the other stuff seems really small, right?

here is a list of players who had to sit a season for gambling:
1963 Alex Karras
1963 Paul Hornung
1983 Art Schlichter
2019 Josh Shaw
2022 Calvin Ridley

Pro sports teams would rather beg for forgiveness from their fans than ask for “permission”. Bunch of clowns. Couldn’t care less.

Maybe in 25 years, Ridley can have a TV sitcom w a dwarf white kid.

It was bound to happen when every other commercial during an NFL game is for some kind of online sportsbook.

But this also kind of begs the question of Brian Flores accusation that Miami Dolphins owners Stephen Ross offered him money to lose games while he was HC of the Dolphins.   Doesn't this action, if true, serious compromise the integrity of the game?

I will bet you a dollar that when all is said and done, what Steven Ross actually said to Flores was nothing like that. Probably a lot more like this: “We understand this is your first year, and we are looking to the future. So, there are incentives in the contract in the form of bonuses, and the won-loss record does not negatively affect them.” Through an agent, lawyer, and the press, that gets translated into getting paid for losing games. Ridiculous.

Spot on Irish....the NFL announces exclusive sports betting partners, promotes fantasy football, and even moves a storied franchise to the betting capital of the world, but them goes spastic over a player betting a small amount with a NFL partner on games that are not his.  Seem inconsistent??

When you choose to "dance with the devil", then try to convince society that you have morals.....

On the contrary, it’s totally consistent with their partnerships with the gambling industry. It’s not just the “integrity of the game” that’s important anymore. It’s also the “integrity of the line.”

Professional football is just entertainment, nothing more.  It's has more and more in common professional wrestling than anything else.

The inconsistency is not in what they "do"....its their applications of what is moral....what consistitutes integrity.

You can disagree with that....we will just see this issue differently.

People can certainly arrive at different conclusions on the morality issue. But it’s a no-brainer on the business side. It’s nothing more than a form of quality control over the product being sold for billions of dollars.

NFL and integrity in the same sentence?  😂

In this context, “integrity” does not relate to moral quality. Perhaps “legitimacy,” would have been a better choice of words. In other words, nothing that will discourage people from gambling because they don’t think the game is on the level. Strictly business.

No. I understand. I’m just saying the NFL has become a complete woke, joke.

I'm surprised anyone on this Forum pays attention to the NFL. A few short years ago, everyone pledged to stop watching.

The league definitely seems to take gambling more serious than many other rules violations/crimes. Depending on who is committing the offenses, of course.

No disagreement there.  But the application of quality control by the NFL in regards to their business/brand sure has tremendous variability.  Thus my comment regarding inconsistency.

The NFL chose to get into the gambling game.  But when a player participates with one of its sponsors, unrelated to his own team or play, for a very small $$'s, the hammer comes down.

I am not sure its a complete no-brainer for the NFL to partner with gambling.  I understand the dollars....but with those dollars comes tremendous risk.

The NEW "Win one for the Gipper!"  Love it.

At least it’s not going to be “Be sharp and play hard, men … according to how you bet the game.”

Well.....maybe the falcons coach should've said that to calvin.

Yes Bob, I am being sarcastic.
