On field rule changes you would like to see
Ballhawk replied to Trojanmp52's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
1. Use the NCAA overtime format. 2. Allow an official to determine if a ball is catchable on a PI call. 3. I agree the offensive penalty behind the LOS should not be a spot foul. -
I'm well aware of that. The reason I said it is even though people see new housing development in Noblesville and think it is going to grow larger, the kids are actually going to HSE.
-
I see Westfield as the school that could surpass Noblesville in numbers down the road. The bubble classes in Noblesville are the middle school grades (6-8). The numbers drop off in the elementary schools. Washington Township (Westfield) has more area than Noblesville Township and Noblesville has two areas that take up a lot of land that can't be developed (Morse Resevoir and White River-at least not in the water). There are also a LOT of new houses going up in the Westfield area. The reason HSE is large is due to the district comprising 3 townships. There are a large number of Noblesville addresses that attend HSE Schools due to Wayne Township being in the HSE district. Carmel has seen small percentage drops in student enrollment as well.

So now you call it 'having fun' with them? Nice back track. You are certainly a piece of work dude. I was paid to coach and I chose middle school because it develops players. You attack me as a 'volunteer', but let me ask, what exactly has your contribution to high school sports been? I am pretty good with mine. And I stand by the fact that I've forgotten more football than you will ever know.
-
I've forgotten more about football than you will ever learn. My mentor has 9 rings, but I'm sure your mentor can match that accomplishment. My comment was not about me. You are all about you and your inflated opinion of yourself. I tried to give examples of why some programs are successful and some struggle. Apparently when someone tries to get into a discussion with you, all we get is "this or that blows". One might think that you are either a student or just the perfect example of someone who stands at the fence and knows it all without ever actually doing anything. Sound about right?

I would guess BigBH stands for either blowhard or butthead. Really, what's the difference? I have coached at both Westfield and Noblesville middle schools. Westfield has a system in place that everyone from pee wees to varsity run and the HS coaches attend practices to help with installs. Westfield runs a spread formation and is an inside/outside zone team. All of the players know the terminology and formations because they are drilled in them from the time they start playing football. I was at Noblesville when Justin Roden was the HC. I saw a HS coach at one of our practices twice and never saw them at a game. I just don't feel he had any plans to be a long-term coach for the Millers. I had to give up coaching due to work and have not had the opportunity to see Coach Sharpe's approach. I do know we had good kids at Noblesville and with 2 middle schools they do have the opportunity to create some depth and competition for spots in high school. The year I coached we competed with the middle schools from HSE, Westfield and Carmel and did quite well. Whether the new staff is able to put it all together remains to be seen. When you talk about offenses and the need to spread the field and run the ball, I think of Center Grove. They are a wing-T team competing at the highest level of high school football in Indiana. They have had the athletes recently to open it up a little, but they would never be considered a spread and throw kind of team. They also have a program that is run the same from top to bottom. The Millers can be successful, but it is going to take time, and patience.

Naming Stadiums/Fields after Coaches?
Ballhawk replied to hhpatriot04's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
1979 was the first season on the current field and the first state championship was won in 1980. The old field is now the soccer field and is named for Barney Stout, a former football coach and administrator at the school. The baseball field was opened in 1980 and is named for Kent Harris, long time coach and assistant principal. The gym is named for former coach Larry Hobbs, who led Sheridan when they used to dominate basketball in Hamilton County. I enjoyed playing on the old field as the track was behind the bleachers and the stands were very close to the bench area. -
Naming Stadiums/Fields after Coaches?

Bud Wright Stadium - home of the Sheridan Blackhawks. Still active, but I think 9 state titles and 2 runners-up allow you that honor.- 74 replies

Playoff Format: Start from Scratch
Ballhawk replied to Bobref's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Seeding the sectionals is a good start, but as this year showed, the Sagarin ratings wouldn't be a good indicator due to the number of games some teams played and it not taking out of state games under consideration. I'm not sure of another way to seed if the Sagarin is out of the equation. Regionals and semi-states on neutral fields. There are plenty of ways to figure out how to make $$$ off of this idea. Let teams in 5A & 6A schedule a 10th regular season game. Sometimes a week off isn't necessarily a good thing. -
Private vs. Parochial - Big Difference
Ballhawk replied to DL6's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Surprisingly have not heard anyone touch on this as part of the 'advantage' that some schools have. It is no different than at public schools that have multiple middle schools that feed in to them. You basically have starters competing for positions when they all come together. This is why you'll see a school with 75 kids on the roster. Good information. -
Nickname Hall of Fame revisited
Ballhawk replied to Gipper's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Western Boone is a consolidation of the Advance Osceoleons, Dover Blue Devils, Granville Wells Rockets, Jackson Township Rockets, Jamestown Little Giants, Pinnell Purple Dragons & Thorntown Kewasakees. Veedersburg was the Green Devils, which is the only color besides red and blue I could find for the Devils. -

Nickname Hall of Fame revisited
Ballhawk replied to Gipper's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I seem to remember someone stating that the Tipton Blue Devils took it's name from a division of the Army in WWII. The Noblesville Millers took their name from the millworkers on the south side of downtown. The mascot is similar to Purdue Pete. The Sheridan Blackhawks are named after a bird that doesn't exist. They were not named after the Indian tribe or the helicopter. -
1A South Semi-State: Interim vs. Interim
Ballhawk replied to JQWL's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
The OL/DL is where South Putnam was supposed to be superior to CC, but boy was I fooled. CC made them look terrible with greater speed and quickness. Those 6'5" 280# SP linemen were clearly overmatched by CC. If the WW line is like SP, it will be a long night for the Senators. -
1A North Semi State: South Adams @ LCC
Ballhawk replied to Basementbias's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
The LCC QB is good when you give him time and let him stand in the pocket. He seemed to be less effective with pressure or when he had to move around. SA has to be careful just pinning their ears back or CC will beat them with short passes or screens. SA gave up a lot of yards agains Southwood, but so did LCC against Winamac. This game could very well be decided by who has the ball last. -
I totally agree with the point about how they should win the title or be the favorite every year. If you look at the final four in 6A, only BD (4,499) is in the larger half of the schools. CG (2,521 - 17th), Westfield (2,334 - 22nd) and Merrillville (2,187 - 25th) are in the smaller half of the class. I would say if there are over 2,000 students you can field a team that can be competitive at the state level.
-
And you mock BD for his use of cliches? Wow!
-
Any school with over 2,000 students should have no trouble fielding a football team that can compete with those in the 4-5,000 range. I'm sure they can find 50 athletes out of 2,000. I don't buy that argument. This is why 5A was split to add a 6th class, so schools with 1,500 students weren't having to compete with the BDs and Carmels of the world. I can tell you that the Carmel middle schools struggle for numbers and the teams aren't real competitive, but why are they at the top of the 6A world? When you talk about feeder systems, their feeder system isn't real strong. Maybe just having 3 middle schools is an advantage as you end up with a lot of kids who have played, even if they weren't very good. Westfield is a relative newcomer to 6A, but their feeder program is solid from elementary up. Their middle school teams consistently win the Hamilton County championship, and they have been successful at the HS level with only 1 middle school to feed in. I don't know what other regions have, but I do know that Indy and the donut counties do compete against each other at the 5-6th grade level and the teams are pretty good. Do the other areas of Indiana have leagues like that to lay the foundation for strong MS & HS teams?
-
The most successful MIC schools as far as the tourney goes would be Ben Davis, Warren Central, Carmel & Center Grove. To me, the one thing these schools do is grind it out on the ground, throw just a little and play tough defense. I see the other MIC teams and the HCC teams and I see spread with very little defense. Not a good recipe come November. When Avon or Brownsburg have an off night throwing, they are pretty much screwed.

I've noticed CP's numbers have risen while CC's have dropped. I can understand the drop at CC but wondered where the surge at CP would come from. -
How many players play on both sides of the ball? There are a lot of Pioneer kids playing offense and defense, special teams, etc.. If this turns into a track meet, is there an advantage if Luers doesn't have as many two-way players? Pioneer's offense is just so methodical. They execute and grind it out 4-5 yards at a time. Can they eat a lot of clock and keep the ball and limit the number of Luers possessions? I saw the Panthers also go to the wildcat look a lot and they didn't just run the ball, they threw it pretty effectively a couple times.

I had heard, from a pretty reliable source, that this was actually their third coach this season. -

Please compare apples to apples. Also, are teams in quarantine allowed to practice or assemble? What advantage would be had from kids sitting around at home doing absolutely nothing?
