  1. Let's see, it is Wednesday, so < looks at Lou Holtz planner > our only chance is if we play mistake-free ball and catch some lucky breaks.
  2. I agree, but think there are a number of reasons why they are under-utilized: (1) Even with the voucher there is a cost; (2) pride - some people are embarrassed to seek financial help; (3) the disciplinary and academic expectations placed on students scares some people away; (4) some non-Catholics might fear their kid is going to get indoctrinated into the Catholic church (they are required to take 8 semesters of theology, but nobody tries to convert them to Catholicism); (5) despite efforts to educate the community that the voucher has been greatly expanded (too far IMO), some parents still do not know, or are uninterested, or do want to get off the path they are accustomed to traveling; and (6) As you know, we also have some very good public schools - Castle, EVSC, SIG. As a community we are pretty fortunate.
  3. Not recently, at least by anyone who has been involved in the boards that govern the school through the diocese. Geographically Memorial is very close to the center of Evansville as is and building a new school solely from private capital contributions would be next to impossible. Both schools have very loyal alumni bases that support their school at very high levels. If either school closed, there might be some migration to the other, but by and large most of the migration would be to public schools. SIG School would pull non-athletes from both. If either closed, the trickle down effect to the feeder parishes would be significant. Mater Dei has had good, strong leadership for some time. Finally, after several years of very poor President/Principal leadership, Memorial has new people in place and the energy in the building and in the school community is very high. Our enrollment should continue to increase as it did this year for the foreseeable future. What I think would happen if the diocese was ever forced to look at scarce education funding issues is that both schools might cease being "parochial" (supported in part by the parishes) and become "private" (no diocesan support). This is the same as what they have in Indy with Cathedral (private) and Chatard, Scecina, Ritter, Roncalli (all parochial). I would have no problem with Memorial cutting ties to the diocese and being a private school like Cathedral. Being tied at the hip might in some ways be a detriment to each school in different ways. It is definitely an interesting thought. Raises lots of issues and ramifications.
  4. No brainer calls IMO. Sad that the announcers saw no issue, which might explain a little bit. Kid looks like a great player, but he needs some behavior modification. It actually seems like a pretty easy fix, the coach just needs to make him hand the ball to the official after every run. If he doesn't, he comes out for the rest of the quarter. Some discipline now might just impact his future.
  5. No. The backup played baseball most of the summer. He isn't the answer. He charts plays. He wasn't taking notes.
  6. Take North +10. We will be even thinner this week.
  7. That isn't a stat to hang our hats on. Like you saying your sister is a good kisser...LOL. The key in the game was us throwing 2 incompletions inside our 10 late in 2nd Q, which gave Jasper the ball with TOs and way too much time. They scored with under 30 secs and seized Big Mo. Our only TD being a a KOR is big concern IMO.
  8. Meh. We looked very mediocre IMO. QB couldn't hit the dart board, drops if he came close, and waaaaay too many YAC. The Tigers have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to compete for SIAC. Jasper deserved to win tonight, but they won't run the table this year. Smallest Jasper team I've seen in a long time, which makes the L ever worse.
  9. I missed hearing the broadcast that always sounded like coverage of the Springfield Isotopes. Dohhh!
  10. Actually, Reitz is the big landing spot. Memorial and Mater Dei each only got 1 from Central. Reitz has them from Central and 1-2 others from what I hear. Bottom line is kids should be able to go wherever they want. How did the JCats look?
  11. I agree. The SIAC should do Frosh/JV double header on Monday and 7th/8th grade on Thursday, both the week after varsity plays.
  12. Agreed. I think MD is the heaviest favorite of the week.
  13. THS has 17 wins since 2015. I predict the Titans start 2022 with a big W.
  14. https://www.courierpress.com/story/sports/high-school/2022/08/15/indiana-high-school-football-courier-press-ihsaa-preseason-rankings/65397284007/ Boonville at #6 surprises me.
  15. The long off-season is finally over. Who starts 2022 with a W? Castle at North ©, 7 pm Harrison at Reitz ©, 7 pm Mater Dei at Central ©, 7 pm Memorial at Jasper ©, 6:30 pm Vincennes at Bosse ©, 6:30 pm Wives, dogs and homely step-children are safe on the west side Friday night as "R" boys will roll Harrison at the Bowl and the Wildcats will put a running clock on everyone's former high school. O/U on Blake Herdes TDs is 1.5 and EFHS unsportsmanlike conduct penalties is 3.5. Lincoln at Bosse should be a good game. A W for either would a great way to start. I'll take Lincoln by 1 TD. After Reitz, North is probably the next most-hyped team. Lots of talk about multiple D1 prospects in the trenches and whether the Huskies can finish above the elusive .500 mark for the time since <checks notes> 2007? Castle is undersized and the Huskies aren't. I'll take the North by 2 TDs. O/U on Coach Nero flying chest bumps is 9.5. Memorial will be without a few key pieces and Jasper is a tough place to get a W early in the regular season. Memorial's strength is the size & experience up front, so I expect Coach Hurley to pound the ball like it's 1988. I'll go with my completely biased instincts and take the Tigers by 7. Sad we won't hear Walt Ferber on the WITZ 104.7 pregame show.
  16. Don't assume the new writers understand the format. Plus they try to take video for social media so they have a lot going on. She was down at the corner near the drain / sink hole so she was looking into the sun for the first 45 mins. The biggest take-away for me was how small Castle was and although I was looking west too, I counted less than 60 on the squad. I was pleasantly surprised to see some good depth at WR and our D was better than I expected. Jasper will be a tough Wk1 test (as always) with us having a few guys out. Hopefully we'll get Rode for Wk.2.
  17. Anybody know what happened? Or why the QB wasn't in an alternate jersey?
  18. I know nothing about what they still have, but Bosse lost some pretty solid players to graduation. I could see Harrison getting 3 wins.
  19. I predict it will be a 2 or even 3 way tie at the top this year and I'll be shocked if anyone can run the table. I just hope Memorial has everybody for Central in Wk. 3. And I mean everybody.. Wk. 4 at the Bowl should be a fun one. Memorial is riding a 5 game win streak against the Wildcats that can't sit well with Coach Goebel.
  20. Sullivan is already there, right? Adding Lincoln, Linton and N. Knox would seem to help all 3 and could be doable with the 2 divisions. Linton's current schedule is not going to get them prepared for a team like Mater Dei.
  21. I wish we were, but Memorial is not in the same area code with Chatard in terms of 3A football titles. We were 0 for 2 before the SF came into play. We are 1 for 4 in 3A. Ironically, all 3 losses came after beating Chatard in semi-state. The SF was not put in place because of Memorial HS.
