  1. Don’t understand the big deal. IHSAA has established the point in a game when mercy is appropriate. If the clock’s not running, pedal to the metal. Once the running clock starts, mercy should be shown by the winning team. It’s pretty black and white to me.
  2. I appreciate the IFCA and IHSAA working together to establish our mercy rule in conjunction with the new quarter rule. Those rule changes have helped me, as a coach, manage games more effectively. No hard feelings if I onside kick in the third quarter, up 28, and then dial up a TD pass to hopefully start the running clock. No hard feelings if the other team plays their starters, pedal to the metal, and scores 60 in the first half. It makes game decisions from both coaching staffs feel impersonal. Business is business.
  3. 1A is better when the Panthers a part of it. Welcome back Pioneer!
  4. Huge loss for all who knew Dan. Great coach and an even better man. I’m very fortunate to have known him. This one hurts.
  5. Overpass is the best pizza in the WRC hands down. It’s not close. I keep my ratings to WRC Pizza King establishments because I love the franchise and tradition. If you’re looking for a good slice, check out Manolo’s on campus at U of I. Good pizza, but the empanadas are top shelf. The dessert empanadas are a must.
  6. Bingo. My reply was about just making sure no one was taking any cheap shots.
  7. Week 7 WRC Pizza King ranking: 1. West Lebanon 2. Rockville 3. Attica 4. Veedersburg (Oxford Pizza King currently wears the Western Indiana crown) I want to eat pizza with Donnie Baker!
  8. From a coaching perspective, the IHSAA set the mercy rule at 35 points. As a team with the lead, why wouldn’t you keep playing until you reach the running clock? If mercy is the IHSAA’s expectation only after a team is winning by 35, why dial it down earlier than that? There are several advantages to a running clock for the winning team. I think if any coach had an issue with the 35 point activation for mercy they would take it up the IHSAA.
  9. Nothing but respect for Attica Coaches and players doing their best to keep their football program alive. Also, the way they play, they don’t look like a team that dressed 15. Their level of play is much better.
  10. My daughters have played travel volleyball for years. The program they’re in now is coached by high school coaches in Illinois. They do an awesome job getting the girls ready for their high school seasons. Most of the coaches from other teams that I observe at tournaments also do a good job.
  11. Some things that I think help: 1. The longer you are at a school, the easier it is to fill positions with young guys interested in coaching who played in your system and live in the community. These guys are usually in for the long term. Bonus is they already know and believe in the culture. 2. Don’t micro-manage your coaches. If you give them a job, let them do their thing. 3. Take responsibility when you screw up, and apologize when you do (this goes a long way with players too) 4. Give credit when and where it’s due. 5. Don’t waste their time. Don’t have meetings when phone calls, texts, emails will do. 6. As a head coach, don’t take your too seriously. You hear horror stories about certain HCs and their egos. I couldn’t coach for someone like that. 7. Take over for some of the crappy tasks that no one wants to do. Hope this is helpful.
  12. You’re correct about the high school. I’ll say this from personal observation, immigrants are not only some of the hardest working people I know, but also seem to appreciate things a lot of folks take for granted. In that regard maybe the future is bright for Frankfort?
  13. The positive side would be the diversity of culture for those living in Frankfort?
  14. Sorry DT, but racking up wins against the local high school or boys club in the early part of last century is bogus questionable at best. I’m just hopeful to be around when the head to head record lead changes hands.
  15. Why would a basketball school fire up the Pioneer football team?
  16. You and the work you do here are appreciated Coach!
  17. Thanks Coach! My current favorite remains Greeks. We’ve made some trips to Crawfordsville since they opened there. How about you?
  18. I apologize. Let me be more specific. This generation of kids is as tough as those who’ve come before them. Most like to be pushed and held accountable, or coached hard. There will always be those who are soft or lazy, and they typically find other activities during the fall, or a place that better suits their personality. We could have a whole discussion on this, but I don’t want to hijack Lake Central/Crown Pointe football thread!
  19. This is false. Kids like to be coached hard.
  20. It was me. I gave up a lot of points last year lol
  21. I’m not in any hall of fame, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express one time. Had to fire the guy running the defense last year. He got his @ss kicked lol
  22. It can be hard to hire coach/teachers at a school with an enrollment of 240 period. We have a great situation at North Vermillion though in that regard. Very supportive administration. Having coaches in the building has been a big part of sustaining our success.
  23. North Vermillion High School is looking to hire a Defensive Coordinator. We are a small 1-A football program located on the Indiana-Illinois border, about 10 miles south of Interstate 74. We have an immediate teaching opening in Math. Potential teaching openings in other subjects could come later. We graduated 2 defensive starters from 2020. If you like working with tough, hard-nosed kids, this is a good opportunity. Contact Brian Crabtree by email: bcrabtree@nvc.k12.in.us or crabtreebm@gmail.com
  24. It can help, but if I was making a list, it would be down the line a little.
  25. You’re correct that the student populations are different, and that favors private schools. It gives them an edge. What is Gibson Southern’s edge? What are the Titans doing to develop an edge of their own when they private schools? Where can you find an advantage of your own?
