  1. Whiting HS and Clark HS are bitter rivals are play in a game called the Battle of 119th St, the street the two schools sit on literally a half mile apart. The rivalry entered its 86th year this year making it the second longest continuous rivalry in the state. Whiting has won the last 8 games and lead the all time series by a couple of games. Below is a picture of the trophy a student at Whiting created. The boundary for the two schools go north and south between our two communities and every year we have a BBQ a couple of days before the game. Pretty neat affair. Another trophy game I'm starting is between Whiting and Hanover Central. This summer we had a kid who needed a 2X helmet but we ran out so I borrowed one from HC whose head coach is a friend of mine. I told him I'm not giving back his helmet unless he beats us. 😆
  2. I appreciate that. While the overall reason we played the game because we literally couldn't find anyone else in four states that was a good fit to play a game with besides EMD, there were obviously other factors we considered. in spite the thrashing we took, the kids loved the experience including the traveling. I'd consider something like this every other year or so. Next year we have a one year contract with Mishawaka Marian Week 2 at our place. It's official but we haven't put it out there... until now!
  3. We're lucky to have him here in Indiana. The IHSAA should contract out to him and throw him some money for his work. Either way what a tremendous resource for coaches, players, fans and the media.
  4. Our fans enjoy beverages... I will relay the info! Thank you.
  5. We are driving. We've been struggling to find an opponent because a team in our conference has refused to play a varsity schedule the last 3 years. We've looked at Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin and EMD was the best fit. 5.5 hours is long but we're going to make the best of it. We're excited to play in the Reitz Bowl against a great opponent. The alternative, a bye week, isn't in our best interest.
  6. You've never met the locals... we try changing the mascot and all hell will break loose. You're trying to get me fired!
  7. We at Whiting do have a large oil refinery but that is not the source of our mascot. Our mascot actually came from the railroad. Railroad tracks surround Whiting and apparently large dudes called "Oilers" used to oil up the wheels of trains as they were stopped in Whiting. That's why our mascot is an oil can. The more you know... 😄
  8. I remember that too as I was the defensive coordinator they broke the record against during the state game. That was a heckuva offense to try and defend.
  9. Whiting is at 52 and we just lost a couple last week. Good numbers for us, normally we're around 43.
  10. Get outta here with that noise. When Forrest is in the game clearly they're gonna run outside. As a DC, I love when teams use personnel that way - gives the play away before it even starts. He runs in a 90 degree angles like Tecmo Super Bowl.
  11. Finally a topic I can get behind. Forrest would absolutely get demolished by Bobby. Forrest was a straight ahead runner who ran straight up. Bobby would break him in half. Never underestimate someone who is playing with pure rage.
  12. There was some discussion on the GID about that game before. I'd love to play Linton again for a rematch.... say Week 15 or so? lol
  13. Not a whole lot of people know about that matchup yet including people in Whiting. I'm excited... it will be a lot of fun.
  14. I am in the process of firing up a Whiting Football website. I use Wix and it makes a beautiful site. Check it out. www.whitingfootball.com
  15. When I was in HS, both Whiting (my school) and Hobart were one of the few teams left from the Region in the playoffs. Hobart invited some of the Whiting players out to their pep rally at the Brickie Bowl. We got to listen to Coach Howell speak in the locker room, they announced us in the Bowl, it was pretty special. They also gave us a Hobart t-shirt. Loving Hobart, I wore that t-shirt under my pads from that year on in HS and 4 years in college. I am not superstitious but the shirt clearly meant something to me and I went out of my way to make sure I packed the shirt before every game. I recently grabbed a couple of storage bins from my parents house of crap my mom saved of me growing up. I opened up the first bin and right on top is that Hobart t-shirt. I told my wife the story behind it and she was disgusted that I wore the same shirt for 6 years. I tried to put it on... not happening.
  16. I'm a big fan of the 40 second play clock. Glad the IHSAA helped lead the way when it came to this.
  17. Whiting has a week 2 opening for 2019 and 2020. Anyone interested should reach out to myself or to our principal (and acting AD) jfregien@ns.whiting.k12.in.us Let me know if you have any questions.
  18. At Whiting we have random drug-testing for any student involved in extracurriculars (band, drama, sports, etc), as well as for any teacher, coach, sponsor that drives a vehicle. We've done it the past 6-7 years maybe.
  19. Whiting has been to this the past two years and it's an excellent event. Very-well run, organized, and a ton of fun. Our kids look forward to it and we will be there this upcoming summer. Our S&C guy, Coach Davenport, does an excellent job of getting our kids ready for this. Last year we brought some large humans and finished second. Hoping for another good showing this year.
