It matters plenty to a number of different constituencies. But most importantly, it’s better for High School Football in general — a constituency that no one seems to take into account.

Please identify the multiple state champs who would not have qualified for post season play under a format that includes 50% of the teams in each class, determined by a formula that recognizes a combination of W-L record and strength of schedule.

Sounds like a pretty good description of an incentive program to encourage teams to do what’s necessary to qualify for the tournament. The overall effect being to raise the level of play across the board.

I guess what I don’t understand how there would be a loss of revenue. If you added a 10th regular season game and cut the tournament field in half, you’re still playing the same number of total games. Why would revenue be less?

Don’t forget “Our star [fill in the blank] was injured during the season, but is healthy now.”

I wonder how they would respond if you asked Shortridge — and others in the same situation — their preference: Would you rather have a 1st round sectional game in which you have no practical chance, and in all likelihood will end your season with a running clock, or a 10th regular season game against an opponent of your choosing and no participation in the tournament? Please explain this statement. I’d like to hear how you came to that conclusion.

I’ve actually seen a very similar play where the K player waited for the ball to hit the ground, tried to smother it, and ended up knocking it out of bounds, giving R the ball at about the 45 yd. line. 🤣😂

I can remember working at the RCA Dome with 3 sets of hash marks on the field: NFHS, NCAA, and NFL. That’s when your Umpire earns his check.

Yeah, I have no idea whether it was a TD. My issue is that official left himself open to criticism because he wasn’t where he should have been. He let the play go past him and then trailed it. That’s the correct technique at the 50 yd. line, but not at the goal line.

Then there should have been an official planted at the goal line when the play got there. Goal line mechanics require the wing official on that sideline to move from the 5 directly to the goal line as soon as the ball is snapped. Error in goal line mechanics by that wing official makes it easy to dispute the call. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies.

Man, if you can make that call from 2 still pics, we need to sign you up and get you a whistle! Unfortunately, there’s no official at the pylon where we’d like to have one. Where was the ball snapped from and what type of play was it?

The rule book has specifications for the goal. If the goal (or any other aspect of the facility) is not up to spec (such as the 2 ft. - instead of 2 yd. - restricted area at Hobart), the instructions to the officials are “play the game and report it to the IHSAA.”

Rule 9-3-7 provides that K may not initiate contact unless (a) the legal kick has traveled 10 yds., or (b) Team K may legally recover the kick, or (c) an R player initiates contact within the neutral zone. The foul is for an illegal block, which is a 10 yd. penalty.

Does it matter if the ball crosses over the sideline in the air before crossing the goal line plane? The answer, of course, is “it depends.” If the runner is grounded, as long as he crosses the plane inside the pylon the goal line extends, and the ball can be outside the pylon. The plane extends through the sideline. If the runner is airborne, however, the ball has to pass inside (or over) the pylon for the TD. Otherwise, it’s out of bounds where the ball crosses the plane of the sideline.

Actually, if the Team K player touched the kick before it was grounded, they didn’t execute it perfectly, since that’s against the rule. 🤣 Too many people watching those internet videos of NCAA onside kicks.

It is not possible for the defense to possess the ball in OT. But it is possible for the defense to score and win the game.

Yes, in OT the goal line is always the line to gain … although you can still get a 1st down by penalty.

That is not correct. Any time the defense possesses the ball in OT, the play is over. OT rule 5-1-1: “If the defensive team gains possession, the ball becomes dead immediately and the offensive team’s series of downs is ended.”
