  1. It was actually a soccer study. What did you expect?
  2. He makes the point that the bias is subconscious. The factors that you talk about become relatively less important as the number of data points increases. These factors end up controlling for one another, i.e., “evening out.”
  3. The subject of unconscious bias on the part of sports officials is a fair one, and numerous studies have shown that it exists under certain circumstances. It’s part of the home field advantage. Because it’s unconscious, it’s difficult to find a way to overcome it, although this study suggests that it diminishes with the experience of the officials involved. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-referees-decision/referees-influenced-by-fans-crowd-size-study-idUSN0327558320070403
  4. I think it should take several seasons of apparent HCC superiority, in both the regular season and the tournament, before we can say the torch has been passed.
  5. Let’s pump the brakes a bit. The HCC is having a fine exhibition season. Let’s see how they do in the real season.
  6. I interpreted the question a little differently. There are 6 distinct types of defensive pass interference, one of which is called “the cutoff.” It’s described as follows: 5. Cut Off Cutting Off or riding the receiver out of the path to the ball by making contact with him without playing the ball. Perhaps this is what the question is about.
  7. Gonzo, I confess that I misinterpreted your post. I thought when you asked if any kids had been fatally injured since lawn jarts were taken off the market, it was a rhetorical question. My bad.
  8. Believe it or not, I’m tipping my cap to the Whiting Oilers. They’ve long been the most successful of the smaller “urban” schools in NW Indiana, but never got as far as they would have liked in the tourney. So, they are trying to upgrade their non-conference schedule. They traveled all the way to Evansville Saturday to play Mater Dei. They got waxed 52-16, but now those kids have a taste of what it is like on the next level. It will help them in the long run, and kudos to the program for being willing to take on such a formidable challenge.
  9. Seriously, this is not the level of analysis we’ve come to expect from you. You could make the case that banning lawn jarts has resulted in an increased risk of serious injury or death. Presumably, many of the kids who enjoyed playing lawn jarts and avoided being killed or maimed are now engaged in more dangerous pursuits, like skateboarding or eating Tide pods.
  10. I know a few coaches with an opposing viewpoint. 🤣😂😅
  11. The problems with timing under the Mercy Rule I’m hearing about most are easily fixable. But one thing I’ve noticed is that when you ask the crew chief if he went over the Mercy Rule timing procedures with the clock operator prior to the game, he didn’t. Curiously, that’s true even though they did meet with the clock operator in the pregame. I know the IHSAA put together a very clear guide on how the Mercy Rule is implemented, and sent it to every school. But don’t assume the clock operator from your game got it, or read it, or understood it. Make that part of your pregame meeting on timing procedures.
  12. It’s not really a form. More like one of those online surveys.
  13. That’s hardly a big deal. At the conclusion of the game, our guidance is to leave the field as quickly as possible. Sometimes you get caught on the wrong side of the handshake line. You can go through the line or you can go around. Shortest distance is a straight line. Done it myself many, many times. It’s a non-issue. If you like, message me with the name of the crew chief.
  14. I seem to recall a Regional at Freed Field when Portage went up 14-0 right out of the gate. On the ensuing possession, they picked off a Penn 3rd down pass deep in Kingsmen territory, but a roughing the passer call gave Penn new life, and they went down and kicked a field goal. That field goal turned out to be Penn’s margin of victory. Fortunately, as it turned out, the roughing the passer call was correct. 😉
  15. No argument with anything you’ve said. Right now, directives/official interpretations go from the IHSAA to the program chairs of your local associations. They should be disseminating the information. There has been some very early discussion about creating a comprehensive manual - similar to Ohio’s Gold Book - that augments the NF Officials’ Mechanics Manual, and would be distributed to every official. It would contain these official interpretations and policies, as well as mechanics. An informal survey of the states responding (about 30 of them) shows that almost all states (28) have this type of manual. Only Indiana and Florida do not, of those responding. Would that be something officials get behind?
  16. That e-mail just went out Friday. Any game that utilizes the Mercy Rule, the crew chief is to fill out the online data collection form here: http://sgiz.mobi/s3/ea796daa4521 Looking at the addresses on the e-mail, I believe it went to the observers and the football program chairs of each association.
  17. Here’s the video. https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/breaking-news/police-player-assaults-official-dunbar-football-game/UW7p84LKxEoF7CuhQvXabI/
  18. I believe the IHSAA is open to tweaking the Mercy Rule based on experience. They have now asked every crew chief to fill out an online form for every game in which the Mercy Rule is utilized. They’ll collate these data and see how it’s working.
  19. Technically, incorrect. We suggested to a coach once that one of his players was running a little hot, and was about to get in trouble. He took the kid out. This pissed the kid off, so he said something unprintable to the wing official while on the sidelines and got hit with an unsportsmanlike. But I see your point.
  20. Wow! 🤯 How has somebody not been all over that?
