Our apparent disagreement springs from our different usages of the word “worth.” You are using it in the sense of a subjective evaluation that is personal to the evaluator. You’re basically saying that if you were the Ravens GM, you would have made a different decision, based on the factors you identified. I’m using the term as synonymous with “fair market value,” a term that refers to the amount a willing buyer would pay a willing seller. Baltimore was a willing buyer and Lamar a willing seller at that price. Ipso facto that contract represents his fair market value. One is an opinion. The other is fact.

I wouldn’t consider this precedent, necessarily. St. Joe made it clear that their “Catholic values” could no longer be squared with use of the “Indian” name. Anderson and LC don’t have that issue.

I don’t think so, although I’ll grant you it’s a very small marketplace (the NFL), so you can expect volatility. How much is your house worth? It’s worth whatever someone will pay for it. That’s the very definition of “fair market value.” There is no objective standard against which a player’s “worth” can be determined. His value is determined by what someone will pay him for it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s pretty much the deal he signed, isn’t it? You’re worth what the marketplace says you’re worth.

Merrillville’s long-time athletic director, Janis Qualizza, is retiring. Perhaps that will bring a change in this philosophy.

A daunting schedule, no doubt. I wasn’t familiar with Harvest Prep, so I looked them up. Suburban Columbus, student population in the 800s. They were 13-1 last season, but play in a much smaller class. Calpreps says last year’s game would have been no contest.
