Wanted to know what others think of the QB play so far. It is not often you have a QB that is a varsity starter for 3 years and those are years that you really have to take advantage of a 3 year starter. I think playing 2 really good teams so far has hindered his numbers and the line pass protection has not been good, but I was thinking we would see more out of that position so far. Any thoughts?

I too thought the passing attack would be a bigger part of the equation this year. But I also wasn't expecting the running game to be so good with three capable backs. Give this offense some time. By playoff time it'll be a well oiled machine.

I think he's looked pretty sharp so far. Although most are for short yardage gains, he's hitting his receivers when called upon to do. He's gone up against two very talented defenses and has just one interception I believe? Maybe this Friday against Concordia they'll open it up a bit more and fine tune their deep game.

He was referring to the "If Penn is back to Penn" which I think BTF is disagreeing with. I don't think BTF thinks this game is going to the wire.

Penn back to being Penn is a big IF. Based on recent performances (Indy vs the field last 4 years), I've got Cathedral by 2-3 touchdowns.

I can easily see Cathedral putting up 42. IF, not saying they can't, but IF Penn could crack 30, maybe even 20, is it safe to say Penn is back to being Penn for at least this year? Portage stinks and the strength of Valpo is relatively unknown at this point. Great test this weekend to see how this Penn team stacks up against the elite in Indiana.

If Penn is back to being Penn, then this game goes to the wire.

Not sure what people were seeing with Wayne over Luers last week. I know Homestead should be a lot better than Wayne so we shall see. still thinking Homestead by 28.

I don't think anyone was expecting much out of Luers after getting obliterated by Carroll. The Chargers have a good team, I understand that, but the margin of victory was surprising. All I'm riding on is the fact that Haydock is in his third year with the program. It's only Week 2, we'll see how the season plays out.

I appreciate the offer and would take you up on it, unfortunately I work in Chicago and there's little chance I'd be able to make it out considering the drive time and time change. But I wasn't insinuating that there aren't good teams residing in 5A, just that in relation to the other classes I think the class as a whole is weak. Maybe what New Pal did to DC is clouding my judgment, but when a consensus top 5 team in a class gets blown out that badly by a team in the class below, no matter how good that team is, there should be reason for pause. This is obviously mostly speculation but I don't think any 5A team right now could compete with New Pal or Roncalli, and you arguably could throw in East Central and Chatard in there too.

One could argue that New Pal is the best team in the entire state. Not saying they are, but one could make a case for them.

It's hard to judge the Fort Wayne teams since they are on their own little island. But right now, the north looks to be pretty competitive with Merrillville, Mishawaka, Snider, Dwenger, and North Side.

Wouldn't be shocked to see them back in 5A after the next 2 year cycle.

I doubt there is much in the way of stopping that. I get it, still have to play the games.

I will say that I think through the first two weeks of the season, 5A has looked incredibly weak. It's an interesting class in the fact that it appears wide open but pound for pound it is easily the worst class in the state right now. The only teams that have really impressed me at all are Whiteland and Franklin.

    Incredibly? Easily?

  7. Concordia vs Snider - Panthers will be way too much for Mannigel to handle in his first year back. Finally a game for Snider that won't go to the wire.

North Side vs Carroll - Easily the game of the week. Carroll sits at the top until someone proves otherwise. I'll be bold though and say Carroll by two scores.

Northrop vs Wayne - The Generals finally get in the win column.

South Side vs Dwenger - Running clock midway through the third.

Homestead vs Luers - I'll take Homestead in this one. But I think Luers will be competitive. Spartans pull away in the second half and win by two touchdowns.

    Thoughts after week 2:

    1. Really like the way North Side responded after losing a close one to Snider. Nobody in the SAC or 5A playoffs want to see the offense North Side ran in the 2nd half. A steady dose of 6' 190 Jontae Lambert running the ball and the Legends doing everything they can to get the ball into the hands of 4 star WR Brauntae Johnson. Those 2 playing like that will keep them in any game.
    2. Is Decatur Central a pretender or New Pal that dang good? Kyle Ralph is the man and I feel for any 4A coach having to prepare for that team in the playoffs; however, 49-0 is still 49-0. I find it hard to believe the other 5A contenders would be embarrassed like that.
    3. There are cracks in Merrillville's armor. 17-7 over Hobart with player issues isn't the sign of a Champion.
    4. Mishawaka has absolutely crushed Marian and St. Joseph. The Cavemen are looking like the clear favorite in Sectional 11. Are they a legitimate threat to the survivor of Sectional 12?
    5. Anderson is will be the sacrificial lamb the 3 Fort Wayne schools hope to draw in Rd 1 of Sectional 12. Right now, I would wager the winner of Sectional 12 will represent the North in Lucas Oil
    6. Scorewise, Harrison and Plainfield appeared to be a close game. I would give Decatur the edge in Sectional 13 if they can easily dispatch of the Quakers. Again, maybe Decatur is still the favorite to represent the South, but I have hard time looking past 49-0.
    7. Originally, I would consider the winner of Sectional 13 to be the favorite over Sectional 14, but Franklin and Whiteland have impressed in weeks 1 and 2. The Mid-State is shaping up to have another great year of competition. I love how deep that conference is.
    8. The fall of Columbus East post Bob Gaddis continues in Sectional 15. I was hoping to see the Olympians bounce back this year and there is still plenty of time for that to happen. Right now it appears the favorite in that Sectional is either Bloomington North or South.
    9. Sectional 16 is looking like it will come down to a rematch between Castle and North unless the Highlanders completely turn things around after blowout losses to 2 respectable Louisville programs.

Great write up. Thanks for sharing. Hard to debate any of that. Could Decatur Central be a little overrated because they reside in Indy? Just a thought, not a slight.

Does Carroll or who ever comes out of sectional play Penn or team from area in regional? I thought they would not meet until semi-state??

Carroll could potentially play Homestead at semi-state. Highly doubtful though. Homestead has to go through Fishers, HSE, Westfield, and Carmel. Temptation said he'd buy me a pizza every week for a year if that comes to fruition.

How many players play both ways for New Pal?  It is this reason (if it's more than 1 or 2) that New Pal could not survive a 6A schedule. But yes, on a given night, they are as good as anyone.

Isn't this how New Pal competed with 6a in the past? Playing their best guys both ways and emphasizing superior conditioning? It's not typical for a school of their enrollment to put 22 equally talented football players on the same field as a school of 3000. But if you can take your best guys and put them on both sides of the ball, that becomes a different story..............if they can last the whole game. They seem to be able to do that. My opinion from the outside looking in.

Snider is NO JOKE in 5A....  So that isn't a slight on them.  And yes 6A North is a barnburner.

But it is available to be done for Carroll.

Let's not forget...Those from Da Region, North Side or Dwenger.... WOW!

And in 4A...Wayne, and more.  Plus New Pal.  New Pal is tearing it up so far!  Coach Ralph is a darned (not taking a 'stand') good Coach!

Not convinced with Wayne. I was a big fan to start the season, but now I'm not so sure. It's only week 2.

I am gonna go on record as saying that 5A sectional #12 will be a a MEAT GRINDER!

I know that locally we have deemed certain teams as the 'favorite'...  But if the first 2 weeks have shown anything to anyone....  There IS parity a the top of the SAC.

Until I am shown anything different....Carroll is the REAL deal this season in local 6A FB!  Plus with them not having to deal with the local "rivalries" until the Regional/Semi-State level....I could see them on a trajectory to LOS from the North if all things work out as the season moves forward.

FB in the Fort is nice this season....so you should get out and enjoy it.  We have stepped up our game.  Of course to meet those outside of the FW area (Indy metro and Da Region)....we may need more.  But players and coaches have done what we look for.... IMPROVE!

That parity at the top includes 5 teams in my opinion. Should be a fun year.

I'm a huge fan of you being right, but Carroll getting to Lucas is a BIG if. Penn, Elkhart, Warsaw, Jefferson, and six suburban Indy schools might have something to say about that.

Carroll has to be good, they barely beat a good Snider team. And it's too early to tell if this Snider team compares to the teams of the past that rumbled with Indy schools. I'll be honest, as of right now I'm thinking if Carroll can sneak out of their own sectional and regional, their road stops at semi-state. I hope they prove me wrong. Just my prediction based on the level of play down in Indy the last several years.

I thought they were just ok. Few questionable holding calls each way and I do think they called a pretty egregious PI on a crucial 3rd down on a play with pretty minimal contact on a ball that was well overthrown. They did almost screw Cathedral out of a possession late as they were trying to come back. Never reset the down after a holding penalty and it may not have gotten corrected if it weren’t for a very animated sideline and lengthy discussion. But I’ve seen far worse at this level, that’s for sure.

    Brave.

Imho definitely..kid runs close to a 4.4 n is 210lbs at 6'1 or 6'2..few of the plays woulda been house calls if he were in..1st game averaged 27yds a carry...he is a game changer

Agree. I'm not going to take anything away from Carroll as they are good football team. But losing a guy like Langston changes things somewhat.

I certainly didn’t see this game as evenly matched at all. I thought Carroll controlled the line of scrimmage and did pretty much whatever they wanted offensively. They are the clear favorite in the SAC. The other 4 teams are good and, damn, Snider, North Side, and Dwenger in the same sectional is brutal, but there is absolutely a good chance Snider is out in the first round of sectionals which would be a sad way for Haupert to end 3 years as a starting QB without a sectional title. Love my Panthers, but the days of winning a sectional title as a fore gone conclusion seem to be over

It's a new era in the SAC. Carroll and Homestead have resources that 90% of their competitors do not. Both are sitting at 2600 with 3000 right around the corner. Snider is just trying to stay afloat in my opinion. I still think this team is pretty good. I'm not sure they'll see a better team than Carroll in 5a................maybe Merrillville.
