That popped out on their schedule for me as well - Concordia was competitive in almost every game in the SAC, which means they are a very good 3A school.  We are not too far removed from the Concordia juggernaut that blew everyone out on their way to a state championship a few years ago.  If I remember correctly from last year's game, Concordia's starting lineup was mostly underclassmen, so they should have a bunch of experience as well.  Expecting a great game.

My recollection as well was that Concordia was almost all underclassmen last year.  “Mudder” game last year.

And, yes, that 2016 Concordia team truly was a beast.  Nobody was going to get close to them in 3A that year.  Honestly felt bad that Lawrenceburg from my old HS conference drew the short straw against them that year.

This should be the best matchup for Chatard so far in the playoffs. Concordia played a loaded schedule with lots of 5 and 6A talent. Both offenses and defenses should matchup well. Concordia has some height and speed at receiver that chatard hasn’t seen yet in the playoffs. Still think that the chatard defense is an elite unit and should keep the cadets pretty shut down. Concordia defense appeared to put up good fights against Fort Wayne powerhouses, but Chatards offense has definitely developed and is continuing to get better weekly. Should be a good matchup but I expect chatard to win by at least 3 touchdowns and take a road trip to Mishawaka Marian in a week for another semi-state bout.

The SAC is a heckuva conference but it’s a mystery to an extent as to how good it is at the top until several weeks into playoffs.

With that, both Concordia and Luers surviving amongst the sharks in the SAC always means they are solid and battle proven.....regardless of record.

That August 28 Homestead/Concordia score of 7-0 tells me most everything I need to know and fear (as a dumb fan, admittedly) about just how well Concordia can play.

Homestead is only 2 games away from playing in the 6A State Championship....yet Concordia took them to the wire.

  3. Honestly....and brutally,  when the IHSAA split 5A and created 6A and a “new” 5A, I chuckled.  Actually, laughed hysterically.  How could the IHSAA not see the inevitable (actually, they may have already known)?

Certainly Cathedral did as the first 4A team to feast on the “new” 5A banquet of minnows.

The concept (I assume) was to give a trophy to some school in that “new” 5A class since they had long pissed and moaned about how they would be great excepting the MIC, HCC, etc., etc.,......basically any teams above them.

In looking at those teams, with the exception of Snider (when it’s population occasionally dipped down into 5A), it was a “ne’er do well” class.

No real tradition of success or competitiveness overall going back the last 25 or so years.

Literally, the weakest schools pound for pound in the State.  They had been GIFTED their own class....and even then they failed.

Guess what? They got chewed up and spit out first by 4A Cathedral.  Then 4A Columbus East and 4A New Pal feasted.

Just get rid of 5A entirely and average them out over the 4 classes below and go back to 5 classes.  There is no competitive reason not to do it since they are not and have never been (excepting Snider) competitive with the existing 4A teams.

Hmmm, do they have scrimmages with freshman and JV teams, because Westfield's varsity has been scrimmaging against Ben Davis for quiet a few years now. Carmel's stadium is starting to show it's age. I can't recall, but I think it was built back in the early 1990's. I know my son ran track and XC for Westfield, and ran in that facility.  He graduated in 2000.

All 3 Chatard teams (Freshmen, JV and Varsity) scrimmaged their Westfield counterparts either in 2019 or 2018.  Since I am old and failing, I get those years mixed up.  Incredible facilities nonetheless.

I have been a proponent of Indiana adopting the Illinois model for regional and semi-state where the day is Saturday and teams agree on a kickoff time between 12 and 7. (Maybe it's 1 and 7, but still the idea remains.)   That is primarily because their tournament is seeded and everyone has to travel, but I don't want to open that can of worms.

Our geography based tournament means that regional is the level where the corners of the state really start to get the short end of the stick.  Just looking here locally- Mater Dei and Triton Central are about 3 hours minimum by car. The other 2A regional in the south (Western Boone and Heritage Christian) is only about 45 minutes.  In 4A Mooresville takes on Evansville Central (2.5 hours) while Roncalli plays MtV Fortville (40 min).  The logistics of being the road team is completely different for Sectional 39/40 winners and Sectional 23/24 as opposed to the central Indiana ones.

PS - I don't know what @Lysander is talking about.  Regional and Semi State games in Evansville on Friday night is always a fun time. 🙂

If there is ever such a thing as sure fire DOOM....it is taking an Indy HS football team to Evansville on a Fall Friday night.  It’s bad enough when they visit Indy on a Saturday evening, btw.

Listening to the “Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald” is uplifting in comparison.

  6. Dunno, but I think my better half reached out to Mike Ford as to tickets....so contact the Chatard AD.

As always, I will do as she directs me....since its long allowed me to live in comfort and eating “Bonbons” (obscure...but 85 year old grandmothers will “get it”).

Trying to stay family friendly as to my proclivities.  “Eating Bonbons” seems to qualify vs. “dousing myself in cheap bourbon”.

So far, I’m not seeing anything on IHSAATV.ORG as regards a webcast of the game.  My guess is that Chatard’s Facebook page likely needs IHSAA clearance to webcast the game.

How do you know 2019 game time was decided by only 1 school?  Both schools(Triton Central AND Evansville Mater Dei) played Girl's basketball games that night. 11/16/2019. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes sports other than the football cash cow factor in to school decisions.

I don’t know....and others just above spoke about extenuating factors in 2010 forcing that game time. Even so, Evansville has a variety of fields to chose from.

I understand that there are other sports....and I should pay attention to them.

I’m not trying to be too “wimpish” about this (on either side) but if you are either driving up from or down to Evansville it should be a late afternoon or evening Saturday game..

What is bush league is adults arguing over choices made by the schools.

If either school had/has an issue with the day and time chosen, they should have reached out and discussed it with the other school and/or just forfeited instead of whining about it.

Love ya’ man but I’ve rode that really, really, long@ss bus trip to Evansville on a Friday and saw the kids I love simply get whoooped.   Not just once, but twice.  I saw a really great Cathedral team (not that I loved THEM) simply get SLAUGHTERED going down on a Friday.

If folks from either side choose to play on Saturday it just seems fair that the game is played late afternoon.  To a point, if these schools even hope to teach their students about honor and virtue then they wouldn’t manipulate the play time.....rather they would choose a fair fight.

In the 2010 Regional Championship game, Brownstown Central chose to play on a Saturday. Mater Dei chose 10am {Evansville time} as the game time.

Coach, I am a distant fan and I have such an incredible respect for what you have done at BC.  Thank you for that rare, brief and factual post.  Yet an important one giving context.

Apparently, what comes around may well go around... I, somewhat sheepishly, retract my prior comments.

In any event, it wasn’t right in 2010 and it wasn’t any more right in 2019....but we all have long memories.

Makes me feel a TON different as regards this current game.

  10. Mater Dei tried to play at a reasonable time on Saturday last year?  And, apparently, Triton Central designated NOON (11:00 AM for Evansville) as game time.

When those great Evansville teams (Memorial and Reitz back in the day) had to come to Indy, both Chatard and Cathedral were always willing to sign off for late Saturday afternoon games....because they RESPECTED their opponent and wanted to win or lose in a straight-up game.  Honestly...something I don’t really think publics understand about Catholics.

Despite being a Central Indiana guy, I’m hoping Mater Dei wins in a beat down this Friday.

Honestly hoping Tim Able had nothing to do with last year’s “Noon” decision.

Not sure the ihsaa would ever use sagarin..i mean..🤔

Right now you can’t use ANY analytics.......Sagarin, MaxPreps/CalPreps, etc. because we have 2 closed conferences in Indiana (SAC and SIAC) and it takes a few weeks AFTER playoffs have already started to see just where those teams rank relative to the rest of the state.

The only alternative is to eliminate conferences (or, at least eliminate closed conferences....but you still need several non-conference games to get reliable numbers) and that isn’t happening.

Concordia is a solid team with a pretty good defense. I think they'll be competitive, but I like Chatard by 14 in this one.

I think if I were to drive to Indy on Friday, I'd be curious to see how Homestead matches up with Westfield. Four good FW/Indy games to choose from.

Lots of good eats in the Carmel/Westfield area but I will defer to others who live in the area to recommend the best.

Honestly, it might well be worth the trip just to see Westfield’s new stadium.  Chatard scrimmaged Westfield there a year or so back.....brand new and beautiful facilities.

As nice as it gets in Central Indiana - which probably means Carmel (Carmel being Carmel) is going to build a domed stadium before too long.

  13. Any thoughts?

If Chatard wins, they are officially in 4A again.  Also, if they win, it’s likely another road trip to Marian.

With that, if there are any folks from Concordia (or just fans from Ft. Wayne headed to Indy) I am certain those of us from Indy would be happy to recommend eating places just as several Ft. Wayne posters were kind enough to do for Chatard/Indy travelers last year.

Yeah sort of where I was going with that. I think there have been years recently where 3A was probably stronger than 4A top to bottom.

I'm no expert on the rules either, but I believe if Chatard wins their regional game this Friday, they are going up to 4A for '21-22 seasons regardless of whether they win state again.  I obviously want them to win every game, but I have been really hoping they make it far enough to make the jump to 4A.  I tend to agree with DT here, at least in Chatard's case, that I'd like to see them up a class.  We can argue all day about who belongs in which class, but I think there's nothing more impressive than teams like Memorial, New Pal, Columbus East, and Cathedral that have bumped up a class and still been very successful.

Agree with you on all points above.  Also, just to confirm, Chatard will move up if they defeat Concordia on Friday.

Like you, I want Chatard to be in 4A and have for a long time (but that’s no reason to move up all the other PPs per some on other threads) but the 3 prior years I’d argue that 3A was more challenging than this new “hollowed out” 4A.  This year, though, I think 4A is deeper overall than 3A.

Also like you, I have nothing but admiration for what Memorial, New Pal, Columbus East and Cathedral have done while bumped up (a little jealous Memorial pulled off a 4A championship first).
