That’s a good point and I think it has to do with Reitz not being the Reitz we’re accustomed to. I’m not necessarily proud to say it, but i don’t mind the Reitz faithful. They’re unlike any other SIAC fan base. When they’re having great seasons, those fans think they can take down any of the giants out there (CG, WC, Cathedral) it doesn’t matter. Personally I think it’s better for the SIAC when they’re at the top of their game. Every now and then you’ll see a Central, Memorial, or MD poster that’s drank too much of the punch and think they’re team is the best ever, but it’s not as common.

I LOVED those Reitz posters back then.  Reitz was an absolutely legitimate Top 10 All Classes team....they just had to get past Cathedral in the South - who was Top 10 All Classes as well.  The 4A State Championship was won in the South those days when 4A used to be the best class pound for pound in the state...followed closely by 2A (as ultimately evidenced by 4A’s almost total domination of the new 5A Class after the “Success Factor”)

I admit to having enjoyed “poking” them occasionally but I was always cheering for them (though my guess is that they never realized it).

    Miss those days.

  2. Just making a general observation about the SIAC folks in general (Memorial more specifically) being less than optimistic as to their team’s prospects in recent years despite still taking hardware home at seasons end.

I recall when Reitz was on that roll from 2007-10 and were legitimately a Top 10 team All Classes some of that time and they had that fierce rivalry with Cathedral.   If you even questioned Reitz’ superiority back then a Panther with dueling pistols was at your doorstep.

Apparently a league memo was issued sometime in the last 5 years.

These past few years the general SIAC demeanor is “Well......we just hope to win that first Sectional game”, “We’ve got little chance this week”, and, finally, on the doorstep of LOS, “We’re just lucky to be here”.

I guess that’s why I chuckle when I hear the word “Darkhorse” referenced to playoff caliber SIAC teams - especially undefeated ones.

Good points.  A few teams were able to hang with them.  A lot can happen in October..   Regardless, whoever makes it out of Sectional 24 has a gauntlet . . .  Mooresville, East Central, Roncalli, Mt. Vernon FV....

I vaguely seem to recall another SIAC  “Darkhorse” that managed that gauntlet quite nicely last year.....all the way to blue.

In conjunction with some of the best pregame “Lou Holtz” remarks in the history of the GID.

It is statements like these that discredit the idea of using Sagarin Ratings as a method for seeding sectionals.  The Sagarin ratings are either accurate or they are not.  After nine games, there should not be holes in the rates or the method.  I am not making an argument for the ratings, but many on this site do.  So, how does a few out of conference games make "big adjustments"?

It’s impossible to apply analytics to a closed conference until its not “closed” which doesn’t happen until playoffs.

As to how long it takes?  I have no idea.

I’m just a monkey with a keyboard trying to do the complete works Shakespeare.  It’s hit and miss.

Evansville Central is a very dark horse. Undefeated in a closed conference, no way to compare them to rest of state, how good are they?

You don’t steamroll the SIAC as a 4A team then come out of it as a “Darkhorse”.

Closed conference or not, the outright winner of the SIAC (particularly if they are 4A or smaller) has to be looked upon as one of the favorites coming out of the South....and the South, by most all evidence, will produce the State Champion this year.

I hope Sagarin shows big adjustments for SIAC and SAC teams after Round 1 as a few teams finally play out of conference.

It should.....and fast.  I think we all know that both Dwenger and Evansville Central are far from their current No. 20 Sagarin Rating in their respective classes....more like Top 5 in each (I could see Central steamrolling 4A).

The weird thing is that, at times, SAC statewide rankings shot high up the charts but the SIAC’s never did.

Either way, both conference’s teams rankings are going to be jumping all over the place as of early Saturday AM.  I think they will stabilize pretty quickly.

Have I mentioned, as a fan,  how much I hate closed conferences?

The fact that we beat the virus for the most part. I didn't believe we could get past week 5. great job by administrators, coaches, players and officials to get us to this point!

The fact we are having a season at all, to me, in light of all the earlier naysaying and the fact that some school systems literally were declaring that there would be no fall sports is, frankly, nothing short of miraculous and will always be what folks will remember about this “year that almost wasn’t”.

With that, the season is far from over and the virus might still lay a heavy hand on what the final outcome of the championship season might look like.

  8. Grew up watching the Big Red Machine and going to Riverfront when we could afford it.

In the off season from, I think ‘69-71, the Reds had a traveling basketball team that played at local high schools against area “All-Star” teams composed of graduated players from that high school.  I’ll never forget when they played at my old high school (Brookville) back when I was 9 or 10.

D@mn, Seaver and Morgan dying the same year.  Rose is almost 80....older than my Mom.  Can’t believe these guys are disappearing.

Interesting that folks always focus on the magic "320" number when it comes to the tournament and classifications.

Its a bit of a stretch though when schools like Elkhart Memorial, Muncie Southside, Anderson Highland, Indy Northwest and Broad Ripple and Arlington, Hammond Gavit and Clark, etc etc are replaced in the "320" by schools like Noblesville Home School, Purdue Poly, Anderson Prep and Phallic Academy.

Not exactly an apples to apples replacement if you know what I mean.

Dunno anything about any of that but I am anxious to see Phallic Academy’s mascot.

Understood.  There will be no more DT generated discussion regarding contraction or any other non game related issues

I don’t have any issue with you talking about contraction (or anything else).  I just find that subject as uninteresting to me as all the “Conference X” threads Muda finds so vapid but I’m down with both if thats what folks want to do - I  just don’t generally have anything to say about them.

Not sure what the point is you’re trying to make.  You post certain subjects that you admittedly want to stir debate/challenge/disagreement (which, again, is fine by me) but you’re somehow now feeling put upon when it DOES stir debate/challenge/disagreement?

Color me a little confused....admittedly, a not uncommon state for me.

I’m genuinely surprised that Chatard doesn’t have a larger gap over the #2.

I would expect it to be similar to 6A with the gap between Center grove and Westfield.

by all accounts and how they are doing it shouldn’t be close...but I guess the voters are more confident in Mish Marian WL and company

During the period from 2010-15,  Chatard generally ended the regular season ranked somewhere between 4th-7th because they would drop 2-3 games per season to the likes of Cathedral, Cincy Elder, Roncalli, Dwenger, etc.

They also won 4 State Championships during that same period.

Unlike, at least one dude here that seems a bit hysterical over 2A polling on a weekly basis, I’m kind of “meh” about them.
